Ginger is one of the most well-studied spices in nutrition research, with genuine evidence supporting its effects on nausea, pain, inflammation, and more. While not every claimed benefit holds up equally under scrutiny, several are backed by clinical trials with specific, measurable results. Here are 10 health benefits of ginger that have real science behind them.
1. Reduces Chemotherapy-Related Nausea
Ginger’s strongest evidence is for nausea relief. A major placebo-controlled study of 644 cancer patients at the University of Rochester found that taking ginger supplements alongside standard anti-nausea drugs reduced post-chemotherapy nausea by 40 percent. The most effective dose was 0.5 grams per day, taken for three days before chemotherapy and three days after. Higher doses didn’t work better, which suggests more isn’t always more effective when it comes to ginger and nausea.
2. Eases Menstrual Cramps
Ginger may work as well as over-the-counter painkillers for period pain. A clinical trial of 150 women compared ginger capsules (250 mg four times daily) against ibuprofen and mefenamic acid, a prescription-strength anti-inflammatory. After three days of treatment starting at the onset of menstruation, all three groups reported the same level of pain relief. There was no statistically significant difference between ginger and either medication in pain severity, relief, or patient satisfaction.
That doesn’t mean ginger is a perfect substitute for painkillers in every situation, but for women with primary menstrual cramps, it appears to be a legitimate option.

Ginger’s anti-inflammatory properties have been tested in several trials on knee osteoarthritis, with mixed but generally positive results. Some trials found statistically significant improvements in pain and function scores, while others showed a trend toward improvement that fell short of significance. The challenge in clinical research has been pinning down the ideal dose, since ginger products vary widely in their concentration of active compounds. Preclinical research has shown ginger’s antimicrobial effects are comparable to chlorhexidine, a standard antiseptic mouthwash ingredient. Combining ginger with other natural antimicrobial agents appears to boost its effectiveness further, though most of this evidence comes from lab and preclinical studies rather than large human trials.

Ginger contains a family of bioactive compounds that act as antioxidants, neutralizing unstable molecules that contribute to cell damage and aging. Interestingly, the form of ginger matters. Dried ginger contains compounds called shogaols, which form when fresh ginger’s primary active compounds (gingerols) lose water during the drying process. Shogaols have greater radical-scavenging activity than gingerols, meaning dried ginger may offer stronger antioxidant effects per gram than fresh. This is one case where the processed version of a food may actually have a slight edge over the raw form.

The one significant caution involves blood-thinning medications. Ginger has an antiplatelet effect, meaning it can make blood less likely to clot. If you take blood thinners, this interaction is worth discussing with your prescriber before adding ginger supplements to your routine. Whole ginger used in cooking is less likely to cause problems than concentrated supplements, simply because the dose is lower.
Fresh vs. Dried: Which Form Is Better?
Neither form is universally superior. Fresh ginger root contains higher levels of gingerols, which are the most studied compounds for cardiovascular support and pain relief. Dried ginger powder concentrates shogaols, which have stronger antioxidant activity and are about twice as potent in terms of pungency and biological effect. Most clinical trials use dried ginger powder in capsule form because it’s easier to standardize dosing, but fresh ginger in cooking, smoothies, or tea still delivers meaningful amounts of active compounds.
If you’re using ginger primarily for nausea, the clinical evidence supports dried powder in the range of 0.5 to 1 gram daily. For general health and cooking, rotating between fresh and dried covers the broadest spectrum of beneficial compounds.
