11 Month Old Sleeping a Lot: Causes and When to Worry

An 11-month-old typically needs 12 to 16 hours of total sleep per day, including naps. If your baby suddenly seems to be sleeping more than usual, the most likely explanations are a growth spurt, a new motor skill being practiced, or the early stages of fighting off a mild illness. In most cases, a baby who is alert and feeding well when awake is fine, even if sleep patterns shift noticeably for a few days.

How Much Sleep Is Normal at 11 Months

Babies between 4 and 12 months old are recommended to get 12 to 16 hours of sleep in a 24-hour period, including naps. That’s a wide range, and real-life variation is even wider. Some 11-month-olds take one long nap, others still take two or three shorter ones. The total number matters more than how the sleep is distributed. If your baby has been consistently sleeping 13 hours and suddenly starts clocking 15, that jump can feel alarming, but it may still fall within the normal window.

Growth Spurts Can Add Hours of Sleep

Growth spurts are one of the most common reasons an infant suddenly sleeps more, and a study published through the American Academy of Sleep Medicine was the first to directly link extra sleep to measurable increases in body length. Researchers found that during a growth spurt, babies slept an average of 4.5 extra hours per day for about two days. They also took roughly three additional naps per day during these bursts. Within 48 hours of those sleep increases, the babies showed measurable growth in body length.

The connection makes biological sense. Growth hormone secretion increases after sleep onset and during deep sleep. Each additional hour of sleep raised the probability of a growth spurt by 20 percent, and each extra sleep episode raised it by 43 percent. These bursts are irregular and unpredictable, so you may see a few days of heavy sleeping followed by a return to normal with no obvious pattern.

New Motor Skills Reshape Sleep

At 11 months, many babies are learning to pull up, cruise along furniture, or take early steps. These milestones change sleep in two directions. On one hand, the physical effort of practicing new movements all day is genuinely exhausting, which can lead to longer or deeper sleep. On the other hand, the brain is doing significant work during sleep to consolidate those skills.

During REM sleep, babies produce small involuntary twitches and movements that activate brain regions involved in motor control and memory. These aren’t random. Research shows that limb jerks, crawling movements, and body twitches during sleep are temporally linked to bursts of neural activity in the brain’s sensory and motor areas. The brain is essentially mapping how the body moves and building the neural circuits needed for more complex skills. This means your baby’s extra sleep may not just be about physical recovery. It’s active brain development.

Interestingly, the disruption pattern differs by skill. New crawlers tend to have more night wakings and shorter nighttime stretches, while the onset of walking also increases wake episodes. So if your baby is sleeping more during the day but waking more at night, a new motor skill is a strong candidate.

Illness and Recovery

When babies fight off infections, even mild ones like a cold, the immune system ramps up and energy demands increase. Extra sleep is one of the body’s primary recovery tools. If your baby is sleeping more and also has a runny nose, low-grade fever, decreased appetite, or general fussiness when awake, a minor illness is the likely cause. Sleep should return to normal within a few days as the illness resolves.

Nap Transitions and Schedule Shifts

Most babies transition from two naps to one between 13 and 18 months, so at 11 months, your baby is probably still on two naps. However, some daycare settings move babies to one nap as early as 11 months, which can throw off the balance. A baby adjusting to a single longer nap may compensate by sleeping more at night or having one unusually long daytime sleep session that looks different from their previous pattern. If your baby’s schedule recently changed, especially due to daycare, the extra sleep may simply be their body adjusting to a new rhythm.

What About Teething?

Teething is often blamed for sleep changes, but the evidence is weaker than most parents expect. A 2025 study using video monitoring found no significant differences in nighttime sleep duration or number of awakenings between teething and non-teething nights. Over half of parents in the study reported observing sleep disruptions during teething, but the objective recordings didn’t support those perceptions. Teething can cause discomfort and irritability during the day, but it’s unlikely to be the sole reason your baby is sleeping significantly more.

Iron Deficiency as a Less Obvious Cause

Iron deficiency anemia is most common in babies between 9 and 24 months old, putting your 11-month-old right in the risk window. One of its hallmark symptoms is persistent tiredness and weakness. A baby with low iron may also be unusually irritable, eat less, or seem generally low-energy. More advanced cases can cause pale skin, brittle nails, or a bluish tint to the whites of the eyes. If your baby’s increased sleepiness doesn’t resolve after a few days and is accompanied by any of these signs, this is worth bringing up at your next pediatric visit. A simple blood test can check iron levels.

How to Tell Sleepy From Lethargic

The critical distinction is what your baby looks like when awake. A baby who is simply going through a sleepy phase will still be alert, engaged, and responsive during waking hours. They’ll make eye contact, react to sounds, feed normally, and can be comforted when upset.

Lethargy is different. A lethargic baby appears to have little energy even when awake. They’re drowsy and sluggish, hard to wake for feedings, and when you do wake them, they don’t respond normally to your voice or visual cues. If your baby fits this description, that warrants prompt medical attention. But if your baby is their usual interactive self between sleep sessions, the extra sleeping is almost certainly driven by one of the developmental or physical causes above and will pass on its own within a few days.
