5 Causes of Muscle Cramps and How to Stop Them

The five most common causes of muscle cramps are electrolyte imbalances, muscle fatigue or overuse, dehydration, poor circulation, and nerve compression. Most cramps are harmless and resolve within seconds to minutes, but frequent or severe episodes can point to an underlying condition worth addressing. Nearly every adult over 50 will experience muscle cramps at some point, and about a third of people over 60 get nighttime leg cramps at least once every two months.

1. Electrolyte Imbalances

Your muscles depend on a precise balance of minerals to contract and relax properly. Sodium controls fluid levels and helps nerves signal muscles. Potassium supports the electrical impulses that trigger muscle contractions. Magnesium helps muscles relax after contracting. When any of these minerals drop too low, your muscles can fire involuntarily, producing cramps, spasms, or weakness.

Electrolyte imbalances happen for a range of reasons: heavy sweating, vomiting, diarrhea, kidney problems, or simply not eating enough mineral-rich foods. Certain medications, particularly diuretics (water pills), can also flush electrolytes out through urine. If you’re prone to cramps after exercise or during hot weather, lost electrolytes through sweat are a likely contributor.

The recommended daily magnesium intake for adults is 310 to 420 mg, depending on age and sex. Despite magnesium’s popularity as a cramp remedy, current evidence does not demonstrate that magnesium supplements prevent muscle cramps in older adults. Getting enough potassium and sodium through your diet, and replacing what you lose through sweat, tends to matter more for most people.

2. Muscle Fatigue and Overuse

Cramps that strike during or right after exercise are among the most common, and they don’t require an electrolyte deficit to happen. The leading scientific explanation focuses on what goes wrong with your nervous system when a muscle gets fatigued. Under normal conditions, sensors in your muscles and tendons work together to regulate how hard a muscle contracts. One type of sensor (in the muscle fibers) tells the muscle to contract, while another (in the tendons) tells it to relax. Fatigue throws this balance off. The “contract” signals ramp up while the “relax” signals quiet down, and the result is an involuntary, sustained contraction: a cramp.

This is why cramps tend to hit muscles that are already shortened or working hard. A calf cramp while running, a foot cramp during swimming, or a hand cramp after hours of gripping a tool all follow this pattern. The muscle is tired, its internal feedback system falters, and it locks up. Building up exercise intensity gradually, staying conditioned, and stretching fatigued muscles can all reduce the frequency of these episodes.

3. Dehydration

Dehydration and electrolyte loss often go hand in hand, but dehydration on its own contributes to cramping. When your body is low on fluids, blood volume drops and less blood reaches your muscles. This reduced circulation means muscles get less oxygen and have a harder time clearing metabolic waste. The combination makes muscles more irritable and more likely to cramp.

You don’t need to be severely dehydrated for this to matter. Mild dehydration from skipping water during a long day, drinking alcohol, or exercising in heat can be enough. Thirst, dark urine, and fatigue are early signs. Staying ahead of fluid loss, especially during physical activity, is one of the simplest ways to reduce cramp risk.

4. Poor Circulation

When blood flow to your muscles is restricted, cramping can follow. Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is a common cause, particularly in older adults. In PAD, narrowed arteries can’t deliver enough blood to keep up with demand, especially during movement. The hallmark symptom is painful cramping in the hips, thighs, or calves that starts during walking or climbing stairs and stops with rest. In severe cases, the cramping can occur even while sitting or lying down.

PAD-related cramps feel different from typical charley horses. They’re tied directly to activity level and follow a predictable pattern: walk, cramp, rest, relief. If you notice this cycle, particularly in one leg more than the other, it’s worth getting checked. PAD also increases the risk of heart attack and stroke because the same arterial narrowing can affect blood vessels throughout the body.

5. Nerve Compression

Compressed or pinched nerves, particularly in the lower spine, can cause cramping that mimics ordinary muscle cramps but has a very different origin. Spinal stenosis, a narrowing of the spaces within the spine, is one of the more common culprits. When nerves in the lower back are squeezed, the result is pain or cramping in one or both legs. This typically happens when you stand for a long time or walk, and it gets better when you bend forward or sit down.

The relief-with-bending pattern is a useful clue. Leaning forward opens up the spinal canal slightly and takes pressure off the nerves. If your leg cramps consistently worsen with standing and walking but improve when you sit, lean on a shopping cart, or bend at the waist, nerve compression rather than a simple muscle problem may be responsible.

Medications That Trigger Cramps

While not one of the classic five causes, medications deserve mention because they’re an overlooked trigger. Statins, widely prescribed for high cholesterol, list muscle pain and cramping among their most common side effects. In rare cases, statins can cause muscle cells to break down, a serious condition that produces severe cramping and soreness. Diuretics contribute to cramps indirectly by depleting electrolytes. If your cramps started or worsened after beginning a new medication, that connection is worth raising with your prescriber.

How to Stop a Cramp in Progress

When a cramp hits, stretching the affected muscle is the fastest relief. For a calf cramp, keep your leg straight and pull the top of your foot toward your face. You can also stand and press your weight down through the cramped leg. Hold the stretch for 30 to 60 seconds while gently rubbing the muscle. The stretch activates the tendon sensors that tell the muscle to relax, essentially overriding the faulty signal causing the cramp.

Applying heat to a tight muscle or ice to a sore one after the cramp releases can also help. If cramps wake you up at night, a brief walk or calf stretch before bed may reduce their frequency, though nighttime cramps are notoriously stubborn and don’t always respond to simple prevention strategies.
