Average Penis Size: What the Research Actually Shows

The average erect penis length is roughly 13 to 14 centimeters (about 5.1 to 5.5 inches), depending on the study. A large meta-analysis of over 5,600 men found the mean erect length to be 13.84 cm (5.45 inches), while an earlier review of nearly 700 men placed it at 13.12 cm (5.16 inches). For girth, the average erect circumference is about 11.7 to 12 cm (4.6 to 4.7 inches). These numbers come from clinical measurements taken by healthcare professionals, not self-reported data.

Erect and Flaccid Averages

Flaccid size and erect size are only loosely related. Some men are “growers” and some are “showers,” which is why researchers measure both states separately. The average flaccid length is about 9.2 cm (3.6 inches), and flaccid circumference averages around 9.3 to 9.6 cm (3.7 to 3.8 inches). That flaccid measurement can vary dramatically depending on temperature, arousal, time of day, and stress level.

Researchers also use a “stretched” measurement, where the flaccid penis is gently extended to its maximum comfortable length. This correlates well with erect length and is easier to standardize in a clinical setting. The average stretched length across studies falls between 12.8 and 13.2 cm (about 5 to 5.2 inches).

What the Normal Range Looks Like

Averages only tell part of the story. The range matters more if you’re trying to understand where you fall. A study of 800 men mapped out the distribution in percentiles. For stretched length, the 5th percentile was 11 cm (4.3 inches) and the 95th percentile was 18.5 cm (7.3 inches). For flaccid length, the 5th percentile was 8 cm (3.1 inches) and the 95th was 14 cm (5.5 inches). Flaccid circumference ranged from 8 cm at the 5th percentile to 12 cm at the 95th.

That means 90% of men fall somewhere within that spread. If you’re anywhere in that window, you’re statistically normal. Only measurements falling below the 5th percentile are considered unusually small in a clinical sense.

Most Men Overestimate Their Size

When researchers compared self-reported measurements to clinical ones, the gap was consistent and predictable. A study of over 340 men found that 73% overestimated their erect length, while only about 1% underestimated it. On average, men added roughly 1 cm (about 0.4 inches) to their actual measurement. Only 26% reported a length that matched clinical measurement.

This matters because much of the data floating around online comes from self-reported surveys, which systematically skew larger. Studies where a clinician does the measuring consistently produce smaller averages than those relying on participants to report their own numbers.

How to Measure Accurately

Clinical studies use a specific method called the “bone-pressed” technique, and it’s the only way to get a measurement you can meaningfully compare to published averages. Use a rigid ruler, not a flexible tape measure for length. Press the ruler firmly against the pubic bone at the base of the penis on the top side (the dorsal surface). This compresses the fat pad and gives a consistent reading regardless of body weight. Measure to the tip of the glans, not including foreskin.

One detail most people miss: the zero mark on many rulers starts a few millimeters from the edge. If that’s the case with yours, add those extra millimeters to your reading. For circumference, wrap a flexible tape measure or a strip of paper around the thickest part of the shaft while erect.

Shoe Size, Height, and Other Myths

The idea that you can predict penis size from shoe size, hand span, or nose length has been tested repeatedly and fails every time. A study that directly measured stretched penile length against UK shoe size in a large sample found no statistically significant correlation. The researchers concluded that “the supposed association of penile length and shoe size has no scientific basis.”

Height shows the strongest correlation of any body measurement, but even that relationship is weak. Across multiple studies, the correlation coefficient between height and penile length ranged from 0.2 to 0.6, meaning height explains only a small fraction of the variation. A tall man is slightly more likely to be above average, but the overlap between height groups is enormous.

Sizes Have Been Increasing

A 2023 systematic review published through Stanford found that average erect length increased by 24% over a 29-year period from 1992 to 2021, rising from 12.27 cm to 15.23 cm after adjusting for geographic region and age. The researchers flagged this as a concerning trend rather than a positive one, since rapid changes in genital development may reflect environmental factors like endocrine-disrupting chemicals, changes in puberty timing, or shifts in body composition. The exact cause remains unclear.

When Size Is a Medical Concern

The clinical diagnosis of micropenis applies when stretched length falls more than 2.5 standard deviations below the average for a person’s age. In adults, that threshold is a stretched length under 7.5 cm (about 3 inches). This is rare, and it’s a specific medical condition typically linked to hormonal factors during development, not just being on the smaller side of normal.

Being below average is not the same as having micropenis. A man at the 10th or even 5th percentile is still within the normal distribution. The micropenis threshold sits well below the 5th percentile.

What Actually Matters for Sexual Satisfaction

When researchers surveyed 50 sexually active women about whether length or width contributed more to their sexual satisfaction, 45 out of 50 chose width. Only 5 chose length. None said the two were equally important. This aligns with the basic anatomy involved: the outer third of the vaginal canal contains the highest concentration of nerve endings, and girth creates more contact with that area than length does.

This doesn’t mean size is the primary factor in sexual satisfaction overall. Most research on the topic finds that technique, communication, foreplay, and emotional connection consistently rank higher than any physical measurement. But to the extent that size plays a role, circumference appears to matter more than length.
