Wine typically has more sugar than beer per serving, but the difference is smaller than most people expect. A standard beer contains close to 0 grams of sugar, while a 5-ounce glass of red wine has about 1 gram and white wine around 1.4 grams. That said, the full picture is more nuanced, because beer carries significantly more total carbohydrates, and the type of wine or beer you choose can swing the numbers dramatically.
Sugar in a Standard Beer
Most regular beers contain essentially zero sugar by the time they reach your glass. During brewing, enzymes break down grain starches into simpler sugars like glucose and maltose. Yeast then eats those sugars and converts them into alcohol and carbon dioxide. By the end of fermentation, very little actual sugar remains.
What beer does have is carbohydrates, mostly in the form of complex molecules called dextrins that yeast can’t ferment. These aren’t technically sugar, but your body still processes them. A pint of regular lager contains roughly 10 to 15 grams of carbohydrates. Stouts, porters, and other dark beers sit higher, often upwards of 20 grams per pint. Light beers can dip below 5 grams. So while beer is low in sugar, it’s not low in carbs.
Sugar in a Glass of Wine
Wine retains a small amount of natural grape sugar that survives fermentation. A 5-ounce glass of dry red wine typically has about 1 gram of sugar. Dry white wine is slightly higher at around 1.4 grams. In terms of total carbohydrates, a dry wine contains just 1 to 2 grams per glass, which is far less than beer.
The category matters enormously, though. A medium-sweetness wine (like an off-dry Riesling or Moscato) jumps to 5 to 10 grams of carbs per standard glass. And the sweetest dessert wines climb even higher. A glass of port can contain as much as 20 grams of carbs, putting it in the same range as a pint of stout. Fortified wines like port are always sweet because grape spirits are added mid-fermentation, killing the yeast before it can finish consuming all the sugar. Naturally sweet sherries made from ultra-concentrated dried grapes have so much sugar that fermentation can’t finish either.
Why Beer Has Low Sugar but High Carbs
The brewing process creates a mix of fermentable and unfermentable sugars. Yeast readily converts glucose and maltose into alcohol, but certain larger sugar molecules resist fermentation entirely. These leftover compounds stay in the finished beer, adding body and mouthfeel. They’re the reason a stout feels thicker than a light lager, and they’re also why beer’s carbohydrate count can be surprisingly high even when its sugar content reads zero.
Some beer styles are deliberately brewed to retain higher residual sugars for a sweeter profile. Milk stouts, for example, use lactose (a sugar yeast can’t ferment) to add sweetness. Fruit beers and certain craft styles may also contain more sugar than a standard lager.
Which One Raises Blood Sugar More?
This is where things get counterintuitive. Despite having almost no sugar, beer’s higher carbohydrate load can raise blood glucose more than a glass of dry wine. Your body breaks those carbohydrates down into glucose, so the effect on your blood sugar is real even when the nutrition label says “0g sugar.”
At the same time, alcohol itself complicates the picture. It blocks your liver from releasing stored glucose, which can cause blood sugar to drop hours after drinking. This delayed effect means a night of heavy drinking can lead to low blood sugar the following morning, regardless of whether you drank beer or wine. People managing diabetes or blood sugar issues often find that alcohol’s effects are unpredictable and vary from person to person.
Comparing Serving Sizes
Part of the confusion comes from serving sizes. A standard beer serving is 12 ounces, while a standard wine pour is 5 ounces. When you compare them glass-to-glass in real drinking terms:
- Regular lager (12 oz): ~0g sugar, 10 to 15g carbs
- Light beer (12 oz): ~0g sugar, under 5 to 10g carbs
- Stout or porter (pint): ~0g sugar, 20g+ carbs
- Dry red wine (5 oz): ~1g sugar, 1 to 2g carbs
- Dry white wine (5 oz): ~1.4g sugar, 1 to 2g carbs
- Medium-sweet wine (5 oz): 5 to 10g carbs

If your only concern is sugar specifically, dry wine has slightly more than beer but we’re talking about 1 gram versus essentially zero. If your concern is total carbohydrates and their effect on blood sugar, dry wine is the clear winner with far fewer carbs per serving. But a sweet wine or fortified wine can easily match or exceed beer’s carb count, flipping the comparison entirely.

The more useful comparison is total carbohydrates, where beer consistently outpaces dry wine. Your best bet for minimizing sugar and carbs is a dry red or white wine. Your worst options are sweet dessert wines, fortified wines like port, and heavier beer styles like stouts.
