The best salt for fasting is plain iodized table salt, and for most people it’s the only salt they actually need. It delivers sodium (the electrolyte you lose fastest during a fast) and iodine (essential for thyroid function), without the misleading marketing of specialty salts. That said, the type of salt matters less than the amount and how you pair it with other electrolytes.
Why Fasting Drains Your Sodium
When you stop eating, your body starts flushing sodium at a noticeably higher rate. The mechanism is tied to how your kidneys handle glucose: a transporter in the kidney tubules reabsorbs sodium and glucose together in a 1:1 ratio. When no food is coming in and blood glucose drops, that transporter slows down, and sodium passes straight through into your urine instead of being recycled back into your blood. Moving from a 24-hour fast to regular eating shifts sodium retention by roughly 70 milliequivalents per day, a substantial swing.
This is why people feel lightheaded, foggy, or headachy in the first day or two of a fast. It’s not just hunger. It’s often a sodium deficit compounded by the water loss that follows sodium out of the body. Replacing salt early and consistently is the single most important electrolyte strategy during any fast longer than 16 to 18 hours.
Iodized Table Salt vs. Himalayan Pink Salt
Pink Himalayan salt is the most commonly recommended “fasting salt” in online communities, largely because it contains trace minerals that table salt lacks. That part is true: per kilogram, pink salt has meaningfully more calcium, magnesium, potassium, and iron than white table salt. But the amounts are clinically irrelevant at any reasonable serving size. An analysis of pink salt samples published in the journal Foods found that you would need more than 30 grams per day (about six teaspoons) to get a meaningful dose of any mineral other than sodium. At that level, the sodium itself would be harmful.
One teaspoon of pink salt contributes virtually nothing toward your daily magnesium or potassium needs. It does, however, lack iodine. Regular table salt is fortified with iodine specifically because most diets don’t provide enough of it otherwise. A study of pregnant women comparing table salt and rock salt users found that the rock salt group had median urinary iodine concentrations of just 70.9 micrograms per liter, compared to 123.7 in the table salt group. During fasting, when you’re already cutting out iodine-rich foods like dairy, eggs, and seafood, skipping iodized salt compounds the deficit.
If you prefer the taste of pink salt or sea salt, that’s fine. But consider mixing it with iodized salt, or getting iodine from another source, especially if you fast frequently.
How Much Salt You Actually Need
General health guidelines from the WHO recommend under 2,000 mg of sodium per day (about one teaspoon of salt) for the average person eating a normal diet. Fasting changes the math. Because your kidneys dump sodium so aggressively without food, people doing extended fasts often need considerably more. Common recommendations in the fasting community range from 4,000 to 7,000 mg of sodium per day during a prolonged fast, which translates to roughly two to three and a half teaspoons of salt.
That range sounds high, and it is compared to standard dietary advice. The difference is that you’re not absorbing any sodium from food, and your kidneys are in an accelerated excretion mode. Start on the lower end and adjust based on how you feel. If you’re doing intermittent fasting (eating within a daily window), your sodium needs during the fasting hours are much lower since you’ll replenish at your next meal.
Sodium Alone Isn’t Enough
Salt handles the sodium piece, but fasting also depletes potassium and magnesium. These three electrolytes work together: sodium and potassium balance fluid pressure inside and outside your cells, while magnesium supports muscle and nerve function. Supplementing sodium without the other two can actually worsen imbalances.
During extended fasts, target ranges are roughly:
- Sodium: 4,000 to 7,000 mg per day
- Potassium: 1,000 to 4,700 mg per day
- Magnesium: 400 to 600 mg per day
This is why many fasters use electrolyte powders or make their own “snake juice” style drinks combining salt, potassium chloride (sold as salt substitute in grocery stores), and magnesium. Relying on pink Himalayan salt alone, hoping the trace minerals will cover potassium and magnesium, doesn’t come close.
Warning Signs of Low Sodium
Dangerously low sodium, called hyponatremia, is uncommon during typical intermittent fasting but becomes a real risk during multi-day fasts, especially if you’re drinking large amounts of plain water without replacing electrolytes. The early symptoms are easy to dismiss as normal fasting discomfort: nausea, headache, fatigue, and muscle cramps. These are your signal to add salt.
More serious signs include confusion, restlessness, vomiting, and muscle spasms. Seizures and loss of consciousness represent a medical emergency. The tricky part is that drinking more water when you feel bad actually makes hyponatremia worse by diluting your remaining sodium further. If you feel off during a fast, reach for salt water before plain water.
Practical Ways to Take Salt While Fasting
Dissolving a quarter teaspoon of salt in water every few hours is the simplest approach. Some people find the taste unpleasant and prefer to place a small pinch of salt directly on their tongue and chase it with water. Neither method breaks a fast, since salt contains zero calories and does not trigger an insulin response.
For longer fasts (48 hours or more), a more structured approach works better: mix your full day’s sodium, potassium, and magnesium into a large bottle of water and sip it throughout the day. This avoids the common mistake of forgetting electrolytes for hours and then overcorrecting with a large dose, which can cause digestive discomfort.
Bone broth is another popular option, though it does contain small amounts of protein and calories. For strict fasters this may matter. For most people doing fasting for metabolic health, the electrolyte benefits outweigh the minimal caloric impact.
Which Salt to Buy
For pure function, iodized table salt is the most effective and cheapest option. It delivers exactly what you need (sodium and iodine) without any pretense about trace minerals that don’t add up at normal doses. If you dislike the taste or the anti-caking agents bother you, fine-ground sea salt is a neutral alternative, but pair it with an iodine source. Celtic grey salt and Redmond Real Salt fall into the same category as Himalayan pink: slightly different mineral profiles, none significant enough to matter at a teaspoon or two per day.
The real priority isn’t which salt sits on your shelf. It’s whether you’re supplementing potassium and magnesium alongside it, and whether you’re consistent about intake throughout your fasting window rather than waiting until symptoms appear.
