No single vitamin is the “best” for hair growth across the board. The vitamin your hair needs most depends on what your body is actually lacking. Iron deficiency, for example, makes you 21 times more likely to experience excessive hair shedding, while low vitamin D disrupts the stem cells that keep follicles cycling. Biotin gets the most attention, but clinical evidence for it is surprisingly thin unless you’re genuinely deficient. The most effective approach is identifying and correcting a specific shortfall rather than megadosing one nutrient.

Iron: The Deficiency Most Linked to Shedding

Iron plays a central role in delivering oxygen to hair follicles, and low levels are one of the most common nutritional causes of hair loss, particularly in women. The connection is strongest with a type of hair loss called telogen effluvium, where large numbers of hairs shift into a resting phase and fall out simultaneously, often showing up as diffuse thinning rather than bald patches.

The key number here is ferritin, the protein that stores iron in your body. In a case-control study of women ages 15 to 45, those with excessive shedding had an average ferritin level of just 16.3 ng/mL, compared to 60.3 ng/mL in women without hair loss. Women with ferritin at or below 30 ng/mL were 21 times more likely to have telogen effluvium. That’s a striking difference, and it explains why many dermatologists aim for ferritin levels well above 30, even though standard lab reference ranges sometimes list lower numbers as “normal.”

Heavy menstrual periods, plant-based diets, and frequent blood donation are common reasons ferritin dips low enough to affect hair. If you’re experiencing diffuse shedding, a simple blood test can confirm whether iron is the issue. Supplementing when you’re truly deficient often slows the shedding within a few months, though regrowth takes longer.

Vitamin D: Fuel for Follicle Stem Cells

Vitamin D receptors sit directly on the stem cells responsible for regenerating hair follicles. Research published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences showed that without functioning vitamin D receptors, these stem cells lose the ability to renew themselves and guide new hair growth. The receptor works by interacting with a signaling pathway that tells follicle cells when to start a new growth cycle. When that signal breaks down, follicles gradually stop producing hair altogether.

Vitamin D deficiency is widespread, affecting an estimated one billion people globally, and it’s especially common in people who live at northern latitudes, have darker skin, or spend most of their time indoors. Several observational studies have found that people with various forms of hair loss tend to have lower vitamin D levels than those without, though the relationship isn’t as cleanly dose-dependent as it is with iron and ferritin. Still, correcting a deficiency is low-risk and may support the environment your follicles need to cycle normally.

Biotin: Popular but Overhyped

Biotin (vitamin B7) is the ingredient you’ll find in nearly every hair supplement on the shelf, but the clinical evidence behind it is underwhelming for most people. A review in the Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology identified only a handful of controlled studies. The most rigorous one, a double-blind placebo-controlled trial dating back to 1966, gave women with diffuse hair loss 10 mg of biotin daily. After four weeks, both the biotin group and the placebo group improved from baseline, with no significant difference between them.

In a study of patients who had undergone weight-loss surgery and were losing hair, only 23 percent of biotin-deficient patients reported improvement after supplementation. Interestingly, 38 percent of patients who weren’t even deficient in biotin also reported improvement, suggesting a strong placebo effect. True biotin deficiency is rare in the general population because the vitamin is abundant in eggs, nuts, seeds, and many other foods. It does occur in people taking certain medications, those with genetic enzyme disorders, and sometimes during pregnancy.

One important practical note: biotin supplements can interfere with blood tests for thyroid function, heart markers, and other conditions, potentially producing false results. If you’re taking biotin, let your doctor know before any lab work.

Vitamin E: Protection From Oxidative Damage

Oxidative stress, the cellular damage caused by free radicals, can shrink hair follicles and shorten the growth phase. Vitamin E, specifically a form called tocotrienols, acts as an antioxidant that helps protect follicle cells from this damage. A randomized controlled trial found that participants who took tocotrienols for eight months saw their hair count increase by about 34.5 percent compared to baseline. The placebo group in the same study saw a slight decrease.

Most people get adequate vitamin E through nuts, seeds, and vegetable oils, but absorption can be poor in people with fat malabsorption conditions. Unlike some other fat-soluble vitamins, vitamin E has a relatively wide safety margin at moderate supplemental doses.

Zinc: Structural Integrity of the Hair Shaft

Zinc is essential for protein synthesis, and hair is almost entirely made of a protein called keratin. When zinc levels drop, the effects show up under a microscope as irregular hair shaft diameter, sharp bending, and a tendency toward breakage. Clinical observations of zinc-deficient patients reveal strands that vary wildly in thickness along their length, with narrowing at weak points that eventually snap.

Zinc deficiency is more common than many people realize, particularly in vegetarians, people with digestive conditions like Crohn’s disease, and heavy alcohol users. Vitamins get most of the attention, but the actual raw material for hair is protein, and one amino acid in particular matters for hair strength. Cysteine is the most abundant amino acid in hair and forms the disulfide bonds that give each strand its structural integrity. When cysteine is insufficient, hair becomes fragile and prone to breakage. Research published in the American Journal of Managed Care linked cysteine deficiency directly to hair breakage in patients with alopecia areata, noting that disrupted cysteine metabolism impairs keratin production.

You get cysteine and its precursor methionine from protein-rich foods like poultry, eggs, dairy, and legumes. People on very low-protein or highly restrictive diets are most at risk. If your hair is breaking rather than falling from the root, inadequate protein intake may be a bigger factor than any vitamin deficiency.

When Supplements Can Backfire

More is not better with hair supplements. The American Academy of Dermatology explicitly warns that taking biotin, iron, or zinc when your blood levels are already normal can be harmful. Excess iron, for example, causes stomach pain and vomiting in the short term and organ damage over time.

Selenium is another cautionary example. The recommended daily intake is 55 micrograms, and the upper safe limit is 400 micrograms. A documented case of severe hair loss traced to selenium toxicity involved a patient consuming an estimated 800 to 1,000 micrograms daily through supplements. Some hair growth formulas pack high doses of multiple minerals, making it easy to overshoot without realizing it. Dermatologists often recommend a standard multivitamin over specialized hair supplements for this reason: it covers potential gaps without pushing any single nutrient to dangerous levels.

How Long Results Take

Hair grows roughly half an inch per month, and the biological shift from shedding to regrowth doesn’t happen quickly. After correcting a deficiency, you may notice reduced shedding within two to three months, but visible improvements in thickness and volume typically take longer. Clinical sources place the timeline for meaningful results at anywhere from several months to over a year, depending on the type and severity of the loss. The growth cycle itself means that new hairs entering the active phase today won’t be long enough to notice for months.

If you’re losing hair and considering supplements, a blood test is the most efficient starting point. Testing ferritin, vitamin D, zinc, and thyroid function gives you a clear picture of what, if anything, needs correcting. Supplementing blindly is both less effective and more likely to cause problems than targeted correction of an actual deficiency.
