A sign of a severe spider mite issue, especially in hot, dry conditions, is the presence of fine webbing spun across the leaves and stems.

Scale insects present as small, immobile bumps, sometimes shaped like a dome or an oyster shell, found primarily on stems and leaf undersides. Like aphids, they feed on plant sap and excrete honeydew, but their protective covering makes them difficult to eliminate. Pests that chew cause obvious physical damage, such as the Japanese beetle, which skeletonizes leaves by consuming the tissue between the veins. Slugs and snails also chew, leaving large, irregular holes in the leaves, confirmed by the slimy trails they leave behind.
