Latex gloves cannot go in your curbside recycling bin. Municipal recycling programs across the country classify disposable gloves as garbage, alongside plastic bags, diapers, and wipes. However, specialty mail-in programs do accept latex gloves for recycling, and natural latex is technically biodegradable under the right conditions. Your options depend on what the gloves were used for and how much effort (and money) you’re willing to put in.
Why Curbside Recycling Won’t Take Them
Standard recycling facilities are designed to sort rigid plastics, glass, metal, and cardboard. Latex gloves cause problems for the same reasons plastic bags do: they’re thin, flexible, and get tangled in sorting machinery. They can jam conveyor belts, contaminate other recyclable materials, and slow down processing lines. Municipal guidelines consistently list gloves as trash. California’s recycling guide for businesses, for example, explicitly places gloves in the garbage category alongside masks and wipes.
This applies to all types of disposable gloves, not just latex. Nitrile and vinyl gloves face the same restrictions at the curb.
The Scale of the Problem
The United States goes through roughly 100 to 124 billion exam gloves every year. That translates to 350,000 to 434,000 tons of waste and up to 3.9 million metric tons of CO2 emissions annually, the equivalent of nearly 10 billion car miles driven. The vast majority of those gloves end up in landfills, where conditions are far from ideal for any kind of breakdown.
Specialty Recycling Programs
TerraCycle runs a mail-in recycling program that accepts disposable latex, nitrile, and vinyl gloves through its Zero Waste Box system. You purchase a box (available in small, medium, or large sizes holding roughly 600 to 3,000 gloves), fill it with used gloves, and ship it back with a prepaid label. There are important restrictions. The gloves must be dry and non-hazardous. Medical, dental, or veterinary gloves that have contacted blood, bodily fluids, or infectious material are not accepted. Biodegradable gloves are also excluded from the program. This makes TerraCycle a realistic option for food service, cleaning, manufacturing, or laboratory settings where gloves aren’t contaminated with biohazardous material, but not for clinical healthcare waste.
Once collected, recycled latex can be processed into reclaimed rubber or ground into fillers used in manufacturing. Liquid latex waste has been repurposed in concrete replacements and blended with virgin materials for new products.
Medical Gloves Have Stricter Rules
If gloves have been used in a healthcare setting and contacted blood, secretions, or other potentially infectious material, they fall under regulated medical waste guidelines. State regulations define the threshold of contamination (blood-soaked items, for instance) that triggers special disposal requirements. These gloves need to go into designated waste streams at the facility, not into recycling or regular trash.
That said, the CDC notes that treating every item that has touched any amount of blood as infectious waste is “neither practical nor necessary.” The determination depends on the degree of contamination and state-specific rules. In practice, most healthcare facilities have clear protocols, and the gloves go into general medical waste bins.
Natural Latex Does Biodegrade, but Slowly
Natural rubber latex is a plant-derived material, and microorganisms can break it down. In controlled soil burial experiments, thin latex samples lost about 16% of their mass in 45 days and 38% in 90 days when buried in nutrient-rich soil with active microbial communities. Fungi are the primary decomposers: their thread-like structures physically penetrate the rubber surface, creating channels and folds that gradually break down the material over roughly two months of incubation.
This process requires oxygen, moisture, and a healthy population of soil microorganisms. Landfills provide almost none of these conditions. Waste is compacted and sealed, creating an oxygen-deprived environment where biodegradation stalls. So while a latex glove will eventually break down in a compost-like setting, it will persist for years in a typical landfill. The difference between “biodegradable in theory” and “biodegradable where it actually ends up” is significant.
Compostable Glove Alternatives
If reducing glove waste is a priority for your workplace or home, newer glove options are entering the market. Compostable gloves made from plant-based materials like cornstarch, polylactic acid (PLA), or polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) are designed to break down in industrial composting facilities. Some biodegradable nitrile gloves use organic additives that speed up microbial breakdown in landfill conditions.
Look for third-party certifications if a glove claims to be compostable. The ASTM D6400 standard specifically covers plastics designed to break down in municipal or industrial composting facilities, and the Biodegradable Products Institute certifies products that meet these benchmarks. Without certification, “biodegradable” on a label can mean very little in practice.
What to Do With Your Used Gloves
- Household or light-duty gloves: These go in the regular trash. If you generate a high volume (food prep, cleaning businesses), a TerraCycle box may be worth the cost.
- Workplace or lab gloves (non-hazardous): TerraCycle’s program is designed for this. Collect gloves in a designated container and ship them when the box is full.
- Medical or contaminated gloves: Follow your facility’s regulated waste protocols. These are not recyclable through any consumer program.
- Switching materials: Consider compostable gloves certified to ASTM D6400 if your use case allows it, particularly in food service or general cleaning.
Reducing the number of gloves you use in the first place remains the simplest way to cut waste. In many non-medical settings, handwashing can replace glove use entirely.
