The core difference is control. In correlational research, you observe variables as they naturally exist and measure whether they move together. In experimental research, you deliberately change one variable and measure how it affects another. This distinction matters because only experiments can tell you whether one thing actually causes another, while correlations can only tell you that two things are related.
How Each Design Works
In a correlational study, the researcher does no intervention. They measure two or more variables as they already exist in the world and look for patterns between them. For example, a researcher studying whether violent television is linked to childhood aggression might ask parents to document how much violent TV their child watches over a week, then observe how often the child acts aggressively. The researcher simply records what’s already happening.
In an experimental study, the researcher introduces a change and monitors its effects. Using that same topic, an experimenter would take a group of children, assign some to watch violent television and others to watch nonviolent television under identical conditions, and then compare aggression levels between the two groups. The violent-TV group is the experimental group; the nonviolent-TV group is the control group. The researcher is actively manipulating the experience.
Why Only Experiments Prove Causation
The phrase “correlation does not imply causation” exists because correlational data has two built-in problems that experiments solve.
The first is the directionality problem. If you find that people who exercise more tend to be happier, that relationship is consistent with the idea that exercise causes happiness. But it’s equally consistent with the idea that happiness causes exercise, since happier people may simply feel more motivated to move. A correlation alone can’t tell you which direction the arrow points.
The second is the third-variable problem. Two variables can appear linked not because either one causes the other, but because a hidden third variable drives both. That exercise-happiness correlation, for instance, might actually reflect physical health: healthier people both exercise more and feel happier, and the direct connection between exercise and mood could be weaker than it looks. A famous example of this pitfall is the finding that countries with higher chocolate consumption tend to win more Nobel prizes. The real explanation is geography: European nations both consume more chocolate per capita and invest more in education and technology.
Experiments sidestep both problems through random assignment. This procedure places participants into groups so that the groups are equivalent at the start. If both groups are the same in every measurable way except for the treatment they receive, any difference observed afterward can be attributed to that treatment. Random assignment evens the playing field, giving the researcher confidence that the results reflect the manipulation and not some pre-existing difference between the participants.
Variables Are Named Differently
In experiments, the variable the researcher manipulates is called the independent variable, and the variable they measure as a result is the dependent variable. If you’re testing whether a supplement raises iron levels, the supplement is the independent variable and the blood measurement is the dependent variable.
Correlational studies don’t have true independent and dependent variables because nothing is being manipulated. Researchers often use the terms “predictor” and “outcome” instead, but these labels describe a statistical relationship, not a causal one. Even in experimental contexts, it’s technically more accurate to say the independent variable is associated with changes in the dependent variable than to say it causes them, unless the experiment’s controls are tight enough to rule out alternatives.
How Correlation Strength Is Measured
Correlational studies typically report a correlation coefficient, a number between -1 and +1 that describes how closely two variables track each other. A value of +1 means they rise together in perfect lockstep. A value of -1 means one rises perfectly as the other falls. A value of 0 means no relationship at all.
The interpretation of these numbers varies somewhat by field. In psychology, coefficients around 0.1 to 0.3 are generally considered weak, 0.4 to 0.6 moderate, and 0.7 and above strong. In medicine, the thresholds tend to be stricter: a coefficient of 0.5 might only be called “fair,” and values need to reach 0.7 or higher to be labeled moderate. These aren’t hard rules, but they give you a sense of how seriously to take a reported correlation. A study claiming a “significant relationship” between two variables with a coefficient of 0.15 is describing something real but very small.
Experiments, by contrast, typically compare group averages rather than measuring co-movement. The statistical tools differ accordingly: experiments commonly use tests that compare means between groups, while correlational studies use regression and correlation analyses. But the math matters less than what the design can tell you. A perfectly executed correlation with a coefficient of 0.9 still can’t prove causation. A well-controlled experiment with a modest effect size can.
When Each Design Makes Sense
If experiments are more powerful, why would anyone choose a correlational design? Three main reasons.
Ethics. You can’t randomly assign people to smoke for 20 years or experience childhood trauma. Many of the most important questions in health and psychology involve variables that would be harmful or impossible to manipulate. Correlational designs let researchers study these topics by observing people who already differ on the variable of interest.
Feasibility. Some variables simply can’t be controlled in a lab. You can’t assign someone a personality type, a socioeconomic background, or a genetic profile. If you want to know whether introversion is linked to career choice, observation is your only option.
Exploration. Correlational research is often the first step. Before investing in a costly, tightly controlled experiment, researchers use correlational studies to find out whether a relationship even exists. If no correlation shows up between two variables, there’s little reason to design an experiment testing whether one causes the other.
Experiments are the stronger choice when you need a definitive answer about cause and effect, and when it’s both ethical and practical to assign participants to different conditions. They require more resources, more planning, and more control over the environment, but they produce the kind of evidence that can support clear conclusions. Correlational studies are faster, cheaper, and more flexible, but their findings always come with the caveat that something else could be driving the relationship.

Knowing the difference helps you read past the headline and judge the evidence for yourself.
