Dark circles under your eyes usually come from one of a few overlapping causes: visible blood vessels showing through thin skin, excess melanin pigment, volume loss that creates shadows, or fluid buildup that makes the area look puffy and discolored. Most people have a combination of these factors rather than a single culprit, which is why dark circles can be so stubborn to treat.
Why the Under-Eye Area Is So Vulnerable
The skin beneath your eyes is roughly ten times thinner than skin on the rest of your body. That extreme thinness means blood vessels, pigment changes, and fluid shifts that would be invisible elsewhere on your face become obvious here. The under-eye area also has very little fat padding it, so even small changes in blood flow or tissue volume create noticeable color shifts.
This is also why dark circles look worse when you’re tired. Fatigue doesn’t create new pigment overnight, but it does cause blood vessels to dilate and fluid to pool in loose tissue, making existing discoloration more visible.
Vascular Dark Circles
The most common type appears as a blue, purple, or pink hue beneath the eyes. This happens when blood pools in the tiny veins just under the skin’s surface. Because the skin is so translucent in this area, those engorged vessels show through clearly. Broken-down hemoglobin from red blood cells can also leak into the surrounding tissue, leaving behind iron-containing deposits and pigments like bilirubin and biliverdin that tint the skin a bruise-like color.
You can check whether your dark circles are vascular with a simple test: gently stretch the skin under your eye. If the discoloration doesn’t move with the skin and still looks bluish or purple, blood vessels are the primary cause. This type tends to respond to ingredients like topical caffeine, which constricts blood vessels and speeds up circulation in the capillaries around the eyes.
Pigment-Based Dark Circles
Pigmented dark circles look brown rather than blue, and the color sits in the skin itself rather than beneath it. If you do the same stretch test and the color moves with the skin, excess melanin is likely the issue. This type is more common in people with darker skin tones and often runs in families.
Sun exposure is the biggest environmental trigger. UV light stimulates melanin production everywhere, but the thin under-eye skin shows the results more dramatically. There’s also growing evidence that blue light from screens may contribute to pigment changes, particularly in darker skin. One study found that blue light exposure led to increased pigmentation, swelling, and redness, with more pronounced effects in people with deeper skin tones.
Friction matters too. Rubbing your eyes repeatedly, whether from allergies, dryness, or habit, causes low-grade inflammation that triggers melanin deposits over time. This is one reason allergies and dark circles so often go together.
Allergies and Nasal Congestion
The dark, puffy circles that come with allergies have their own name: allergic shiners. The mechanism is straightforward. When your immune system reacts to an allergen, the moist lining inside your nose swells. That swelling slows blood flow through the veins around your sinuses, and those veins happen to sit close to the skin’s surface right beneath your eyes. When they swell with backed-up blood, the area looks darker and puffier.
This isn’t limited to seasonal allergies. Chronic sinus congestion, frequent colds, or anything that keeps the nasal passages inflamed can produce the same effect. If your dark circles get worse during allergy season or when you have a cold, vascular congestion from nasal swelling is likely playing a role.
Volume Loss and Aging
Starting around age 35, the fat pads that cushion your face begin to shrink in a predictable pattern. The under-eye area is one of the first places this shows up. As the fat pad beneath the eye thins out, a hollow called the tear trough deepens. This creates a shadow that looks like a dark circle even when there’s no pigment or vascular issue at all.
Collagen loss compounds the problem. As the skin’s structural support weakens with age, the already-thin under-eye skin becomes even more translucent. Blood vessels that were barely visible at 25 become prominent at 45. This is why many people notice dark circles worsening steadily through their 30s and 40s, even without any change in sleep habits or health.
Iron Deficiency
Low iron levels are one of the most overlooked contributors to dark circles. Iron is essential for producing hemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen to tissues. When iron is low, less oxygen reaches the skin, and the body may respond by producing more melanin in the affected area. The result is a dull, darkened appearance that’s especially visible in the thin skin under the eyes.
Iron deficiency is the most common nutritional deficiency worldwide, so it’s worth considering if your dark circles appeared gradually and don’t seem connected to sleep, allergies, or aging. Other signs include fatigue, pale skin, brittle nails, and feeling cold easily. A simple blood test can confirm whether your iron stores are low.
Fluid Retention and Diet
Waking up with puffy, darkened eyes is often a fluid issue. When you’re lying flat for hours, gravity isn’t pulling fluid away from your face the way it does during the day, so it pools in the loose tissue around your eyes. This is normal and usually resolves within an hour or two of being upright.
High sodium intake makes it worse. Excess salt triggers the kidneys to retain more water, increasing the total fluid volume in your body. That extra fluid seeps into the spaces between cells, and the under-eye area, with its thin skin and loose connective tissue, is one of the first places you’ll notice it. Alcohol has a similar effect through dehydration and rebound fluid retention. If your dark circles are worst in the morning and improve as the day goes on, fluid retention is a likely factor.
Why Most People Have More Than One Cause
In a classification study of 65 people with dark circles, researchers found that only a small percentage had a single cause. Just 5% had purely pigmented dark circles, 14% had purely vascular ones, and 3% had circles caused only by structural changes like volume loss. A full 78% had a mixed type, combining two or three of these factors.
This explains why no single product or treatment works for everyone. Someone with vascular dark circles and volume loss needs a completely different approach than someone dealing with pigment and allergies.
What Actually Helps
Matching your treatment to your type of dark circle matters more than choosing the most expensive eye cream. For vascular circles (blue or purple), topical caffeine helps by constricting blood vessels and improving circulation. Vitamin K, which supports blood coagulation and circulation, is often combined with caffeine in eye products. In one clinical trial, a pad containing 3% caffeine and 1% vitamin K reduced the appearance of dark circles in all participants over four weeks, though the average improvement was modest at about 16%.
For pigmented circles (brown), ingredients that interrupt melanin production are more useful. Vitamin C, niacinamide, and kojic acid can gradually lighten excess pigment with consistent use over several weeks. Daily sunscreen around the eyes prevents further darkening.
For circles caused by volume loss, topical products have limited effect because the problem is structural. Dermal fillers placed in the tear trough can restore lost volume and eliminate the shadow, with results that typically last several months to over a year.
For fluid-related puffiness, sleeping with your head slightly elevated, reducing sodium intake, and applying a cool compress in the morning can make a noticeable difference. Cold constricts blood vessels and encourages fluid drainage. Caffeine-based eye creams work here too, since they reduce both vascular congestion and puffiness.
Addressing underlying causes like allergies or iron deficiency often does more than any topical product. If nasal congestion is driving your dark circles, treating the congestion treats the circles. If low iron is the issue, correcting the deficiency gradually restores normal oxygen delivery to the skin.
