A comprehensive review of bear-human conflicts in Alaska demonstrated that bear spray successfully stopped a bear’s aggressive behavior in 92% of incidents involving brown and grizzly bears. This high success rate offers a significant advantage over other defense methods.
Bear spray is also demonstrably safer than relying on a firearm. In close-range encounters, 98% of people carrying bear spray were uninjured, compared to those who used a firearm for defense, who suffered injury in 50% to 56% of incidents. Furthermore, bear spray is a non-lethal deterrent, resolving the situation without causing death to the bear, which occurred in 61% of encounters where a firearm was discharged.
Understanding Bear Spray Composition
The efficacy of bear spray stems from its active ingredient, Oleoresin Capsicum (OC), an oily extract derived from chili peppers. This extract contains capsaicin and capsaicinoids, which are powerful irritants. Regulations require bear spray to have an active capsaicinoid concentration between 1% and 2%.
When deployed, the propellant releases the OC in a highly atomized cloud designed to disperse widely. This cloud immediately irritates the bear’s eyes, nose, throat, and lungs, causing temporary blindness, difficulty breathing, and a burning sensation in the mucous membranes. This intense, non-permanent physiological effect disrupts the bear’s ability to see, smell, and focus on the perceived threat. Bear spray differs from personal defense pepper spray by having a much larger canister size, a longer projection range, and a fog-like spray pattern.
Crucial Factors for Successful Deployment
The effectiveness of bear spray relies heavily on its correct and immediate deployment during a threatening encounter. The canister should always be carried in a readily accessible chest or hip holster, never stored inside a backpack, as a charging bear can cover ground quickly. Readiness also involves preparing the canister by removing the safety clip before the bear is within deployment range.
When a bear is approaching aggressively, the user should aim slightly downward to create a dense, cone-shaped cloud or barrier between themselves and the animal. Most canisters are designed to spray a minimum of 25 feet. A warning burst can be deployed when the bear is 30 to 60 feet away to gauge wind direction. Limitations and Storage Requirements

Strong crosswinds or headwinds can cause the spray cloud to disperse rapidly or even blow back toward the user, reducing its effectiveness and potentially causing self-contamination. The pressurized nature of the canister means its performance can degrade over time, requiring an expiration date, typically three to five years after manufacture.
Proper storage is necessary to maintain the canister’s pressure and chemical integrity. Bear spray should be kept in a cool, dry location, ideally between 35°F and 120°F. Exposure to extreme heat, such as leaving it in a vehicle, can cause the pressurized can to rupture or leak. Due to its propellant, bear spray is prohibited in both checked and carry-on luggage when traveling by air, necessitating purchase or rental at the destination.
