This silent multiplication is why you can feel perfectly healthy for a day or two after being exposed. Your immune system hasn’t yet mounted a strong enough response for you to notice anything. The symptoms you eventually feel, like fever, body aches, and fatigue, are largely your immune system’s reaction to the spreading infection, not the virus itself destroying tissue.
You’re Contagious Before You Feel Sick

That means during the final stretch of the incubation period, you’re already contagious without knowing it. You then remain infectious for roughly five to seven days after symptoms begin.
This pre-symptomatic spread is a major reason flu outbreaks are so hard to contain. By the time someone realizes they’re sick and stays home, they may have already passed the virus to coworkers, family members, or fellow commuters. Young children and people with weakened immune systems can shed the virus for even longer.
