A structure in the midbrain called the superior colliculus is one of the primary sites where this fusion occurs. It receives visual, auditory, and touch-related inputs simultaneously, and its neurons amplify cross-modal signals to help you detect, locate, and orient toward events in your environment.

When two matching signals arrive at the same time, say a flash of light and a burst of sound from the same direction, the superior colliculus produces a response that is faster, more reliable, and more accurate than either signal alone would generate. In a well-lit room, vision gets heavy weight for determining an object’s location. In darkness, hearing and touch take over. This isn’t a conscious decision. It happens automatically, and in healthy young adults, the weighting closely matches what mathematical models predict would be optimal.

A 2024 review in PubMed examined whether this reliability-weighting principle holds across different populations.
