How Big Are Queen Bees? Size Compared to Workers

The queen bee is the single reproductive female in a honeybee colony. Her primary function is to lay eggs, requiring a specialized anatomy much larger than that of her many daughters. This noticeable size difference reflects her unique biological purpose as the mother of the entire colony and is the result of a highly regulated developmental process.

The Physical Dimensions of a Queen Bee

The size of a mature Apis mellifera queen, the most common species of honeybee, is primarily determined by her reproductive status. A queen generally measures between 18 and 20 millimeters in length, sometimes reaching up to 22 millimeters. This makes her visibly longer than every other individual in the hive.

The queen’s body mass indicates her quality and health. A high-quality queen should weigh at least 200 milligrams upon emergence. Her weight fluctuates based on the colony’s activity. During intense egg-laying periods, such as when the colony experiences a high nectar flow, her weight can increase substantially, sometimes reaching almost 300 milligrams.

Size Comparison Queen vs Colony Members

The queen bee is the longest individual in the colony, easily distinguished from worker bees and drones. Worker bees, the sterile females, measure about 10 to 15 millimeters long. Drones, the male bees, are intermediate in length (15 to 17 millimeters), but they possess a wider, blunter body shape compared to the queen.

The most telling size difference is concentrated in the queen’s abdomen, which is long, pointed, and tapered, often described as torpedo-shaped. This elongated abdomen provides space for her massive, fully developed ovaries, responsible for daily egg production. In contrast, the worker bee has a shorter, rounded abdomen, and the drone has a stocky, barrel-shaped abdomen.

Another notable feature is the queen’s wings, which appear disproportionately small relative to her body length. Because of her long abdomen, the wings only cover about two-thirds of her body when she is at rest. This contrasts with the worker bee, whose wings fully cover her shorter body. The worker requires full-length wings for constant foraging flights, while the queen only flies a few times for mating and swarming.

Factors Influencing Queen Size

The primary factor determining the queen’s greater size and reproductive capacity is the specialized diet she receives during the larval stage. The difference in nutrition dictates the final form of the female larvae. A potential queen is fed exclusively and continuously with royal jelly, a milky-white secretion produced by nurse bees.

Nutritional Development

Royal jelly is a complex substance rich in proteins, vitamins, and specific fatty acids. It activates genes that promote queen development. This continuous, nutrient-dense diet triggers the development of a body size up to 40 percent larger than a worker bee. Worker larvae are switched to a diet of bee bread (a mix of pollen and honey) after only the first few days of life.

Cell Size and Reproductive State

The physical space available to the developing larva also influences the final size of the adult queen. Larvae destined to be queens are reared in specialized, larger queen cells. Studies show that queens raised in larger cell cups generally have a higher body weight and wider body parts. This suggests that available space during the pupal stage facilitates greater physical development.

Beyond development, the queen’s size is influenced by her reproductive state throughout her adult life. A queen actively laying eggs is referred to as gravid, meaning her abdomen is distended with developing eggs. The volume and weight of the eggs she carries contribute to her maximum size and weight during the peak laying season.
