How Big Can a Wombat Get? Size by Species

The wombat is an Australian marsupial known for its robust, stocky build and short, powerful limbs adapted for extensive burrowing. Their impressive size allows them to be formidable diggers, creating complex tunnel systems that serve as shelter. The maximum dimensions an individual wombat can reach vary significantly depending on which of the three extant species it belongs to.

Identifying the Three Wombat Species

The three wombat species are categorized into two genera, distinguished primarily by the presence or absence of hair on their nose. The Common Wombat (Vombatus ursinus) is the only member of its genus and is also known as the Bare-nosed Wombat, possessing a bald, granular nose pad. This species typically has coarse fur, small, rounded ears, and a wide distribution across southeastern Australia, including Tasmania.

The other two species belong to the genus Lasiorhinus, the Hairy-nosed Wombats. These wombats have silky fur, larger ears, and a snout entirely covered in fine hairs. They include the Southern Hairy-nosed Wombat (Lasiorhinus latifrons), found in the semi-arid regions of South Australia, and the critically endangered Northern Hairy-nosed Wombat (Lasiorhinus krefftii), restricted to a small area in Queensland.

Typical Weight and Length Measurements

The largest of the three species is generally the mainland subspecies of the Common Wombat, which can approach a length of 1.3 meters from head to rump. The average adult Common Wombat typically measures between 102 and 114 centimeters long (40 to 45 inches) and weighs between 20 and 35 kilograms (44 and 77 pounds). The heaviest recorded specimens can reach a maximum weight of up to 39 kilograms.

The two Hairy-nosed Wombat species are generally smaller than the Common Wombat. Adult Hairy-nosed Wombats typically fall within a body length range of 77 to 93 centimeters and weigh between 19 and 32 kilograms. The Southern Hairy-nosed Wombat is often reported to be the smallest of the three species. The critically endangered Northern Hairy-nosed Wombat is slightly larger than the Southern species but remains less massive than the largest Common Wombat individuals.

Variables Affecting Adult Wombat Dimensions

An individual wombat’s final size is influenced by several biological and environmental factors, not solely its species. Geographical location determines the resources available, which directly affects body size. For example, island subspecies of the Common Wombat, such as those on Flinders Island, are generally smaller than their mainland counterparts due to limited resources.

The quality and abundance of the herbivorous diet (grasses, roots, and herbs) directly impacts growth and mass accumulation. Wombats have a slow metabolism, taking up to 14 days to complete digestion, which helps them survive in resource-scarce environments. Adult size and reproductive maturity are typically attained around three years of age. Furthermore, a slight degree of sexual size difference exists, with female wombats sometimes being marginally larger than males of the same age.
