How Big Is a Medium Condom? Width, Length & Fit

A medium (regular) condom has a nominal width of 52 to 56 mm and a length of 190 to 195 mm. In inches, that translates to roughly 2 to 2.2 inches across when laid flat and about 7.5 inches long. These are the most common condoms on the shelf, and they fit the widest range of penis sizes, but “medium” doesn’t mean one-size-fits-all.

What “Nominal Width” Actually Means

Condom sizing revolves around a measurement called nominal width. This is the width of the condom when it’s laid flat, measured across the opening. It’s not the same as the diameter of your penis or the circumference. Because a condom is a tube of stretchy material pressed flat, its nominal width is essentially half the inner circumference of the unstretched condom.

This number matters more than length for getting a good fit. A condom that’s too narrow will feel tight and uncomfortable, and one that’s too wide can slip off during sex. Length is more standardized across sizes, and excess length simply rolls down less far, so width is the measurement to pay attention to.

Medium Compared to Other Sizes

Here’s how the standard sizing tiers break down:

  • Small: 49 to 52 mm nominal width, 190 to 195 mm long
  • Regular/Medium: 52 to 56 mm nominal width, 190 to 195 mm long
  • Large: 56 to 60 mm nominal width, 190 to 200 mm long
  • Extra-Large: 60 to 64 mm nominal width, 200 to 205 mm long

Notice that the length barely changes between small and large. The real difference between sizes is that 4 to 8 mm range in width, which translates to a noticeably different fit around the shaft.

How to Know if Medium Is Your Size

You need one measurement: the circumference (girth) of your erect penis at its widest point. Wrap a soft measuring tape or a strip of paper around the shaft, mark where it overlaps, and measure the length of that strip.

To convert your girth to the width condom makers use, divide your circumference by 3.14. So if your girth is 5 inches (127 mm), your width is about 1.6 inches (40 mm). A medium condom with a 52 to 56 mm nominal width is designed to stretch over a penis in this general range, since latex needs to be somewhat narrower than your actual size to stay snug.

As a general guide, a medium condom works well for a girth of roughly 4.7 to 5.1 inches (119 to 130 mm). If your girth is under 4.7 inches, a snug or small condom will provide better contact and less slippage. If you’re above 5.1 inches, a large will feel less constricting.

Why the Right Fit Matters

A condom that’s too tight is more likely to break during use because the latex is stretched closer to its limit. It can also reduce sensation and make sex less comfortable, which means you’re less likely to use one consistently. On the other side, a loose condom can bunch up, slide off, or allow fluid to leak around the base, all of which defeat the purpose.

If a regular condom leaves a red ring at the base or feels like it’s squeezing, size up. If it slides around or you find yourself holding it in place, size down. The right condom should unroll smoothly, feel secure without pinching, and stay in place throughout sex without you thinking about it.

Brand Sizing Varies

The 52 to 56 mm range is an industry standard, but individual brands don’t all land at the same point within that range. One brand’s “regular” might sit at 52 mm while another’s hits 54 mm. That two-millimeter gap is small on paper but noticeable in practice. If you’ve tried one brand’s standard condom and it didn’t feel right, switching brands before switching sizes is worth trying. Check the nominal width printed on the box (usually on the side or back panel) to compare directly rather than relying on the size label alone.
