At 9 weeks pregnant, your uterus is roughly the size of a tennis ball or a large lemon. It has grown from its pre-pregnancy size (about the size of a small pear) but is still tucked entirely within your pelvis, not yet visible from the outside. While you probably won’t notice a true baby bump yet, the changes happening inside are already affecting how your body feels day to day.
Uterus Size at 9 Weeks
Before pregnancy, the uterus measures about 7 to 8 centimeters long and weighs around 60 grams. By week 9, it has roughly doubled in volume. It now measures closer to 9 or 10 centimeters from top to bottom, comparable to a grapefruit or tennis ball depending on individual variation. The growth is driven by increased blood flow and the thickening of the uterine walls, not just by the size of the embryo itself.
The embryo at this stage has a crown-to-rump length of about 23 millimeters, roughly the size of a cherry. So most of the uterine volume at 9 weeks is amniotic fluid, the placenta forming around it, and the muscular uterine wall itself rather than the embryo.
Why You Can’t Feel It From the Outside
Your uterus at 9 weeks still sits low in the pelvis, behind and above the bladder. It won’t rise above the pelvic bone until around 12 weeks. This is why your healthcare provider doesn’t measure fundal height (the distance from the pubic bone to the top of the uterus) until about 20 weeks. Before that point, the uterus simply isn’t high enough to measure through the abdomen.
Some people do notice their lower belly feeling firmer or slightly fuller by 9 weeks, especially if this isn’t a first pregnancy. That firmness is real, but it’s mostly bloating from hormonal changes and the early expansion of the uterus pressing on surrounding structures. A visible bump from the uterus alone typically appears closer to 12 to 16 weeks.
How the Growing Uterus Affects Your Bladder
Even though your uterus is still small, it sits directly behind your bladder. As it expands, it presses on the bladder and reduces how much urine it can comfortably hold. This is why frequent trips to the bathroom are one of the earliest and most noticeable pregnancy symptoms, often starting in the first trimester well before any bump is showing.
This pressure tends to ease in the second trimester when the uterus rises out of the pelvis and away from the bladder. It returns in the third trimester when the baby drops lower again.
Ligament Stretching and Early Discomfort
Your uterus is anchored by two rope-like bands called round ligaments, each about 10 to 12 centimeters long, connecting the uterus to the lower abdominal wall through the groin. As the uterus expands, these ligaments stretch and widen to support it. That stretching can cause aches, cramps, or sharp pulling sensations in your lower pelvis or groin area, on one or both sides.
These twinges are especially common when you move suddenly, sneeze, cough, or change positions quickly. The ligaments normally contract and loosen at a slow pace, so a fast movement forces them to react faster than they’re designed to, triggering a brief, sharp pain. It typically lasts only seconds to minutes and is completely normal, though it can be startling the first time you feel it.
Some people begin noticing round ligament discomfort as early as 9 weeks, though it becomes more common as the uterus grows larger through the second trimester.
How Uterus Size Changes Week by Week
The uterus grows steadily throughout pregnancy, but the pace accelerates as the weeks go on. Here’s a rough progression for context:
- Pre-pregnancy: Small pear, about 7 to 8 cm long
- 9 weeks: Tennis ball or large lemon, about 9 to 10 cm
- 12 weeks: Large orange or grapefruit, rising above the pelvic bone
- 16 weeks: Small melon, fundus roughly halfway between the pubic bone and navel
- 20 weeks: Reaches the navel, and fundal height measurements begin matching gestational age in centimeters
By 9 weeks you’re still in the early phase of this growth curve. The most dramatic visible changes happen between weeks 12 and 20, when the uterus moves out of the pelvis and into the abdominal cavity. Until then, the internal changes are significant even if the mirror doesn’t show much yet.
