At 4 weeks pregnant, your baby is about 1/6 of an inch long, roughly the size of four or five poppy seeds lined up together. That’s tiny enough to sit on the tip of a pencil. Most people at this stage are just discovering they might be pregnant, often because their period is a day or two late. Despite the microscopic size, a surprising amount of development is already underway.
How Big Is the Embryo at 4 Weeks
The embryo measures approximately 0.16 inches, or just over 1 millimeter. A poppy seed is the most common comparison, and it’s a good one. If you sprinkled a few poppy seeds onto your palm, you’d be looking at something close to the actual size of the embryo at this point. It’s not yet visible on most ultrasounds, and your uterus hasn’t changed size at all.
At this stage, the embryo isn’t recognizable as anything resembling a baby. It’s a flat, layered disc of rapidly dividing cells that recently finished burrowing into the lining of your uterus. That process, called implantation, typically happens 10 to 14 days after conception, putting it right around the time your period would normally arrive.
What’s Happening Inside Those Tiny Cells
Even at poppy-seed size, the embryo has already organized itself into three distinct layers of cells, each responsible for building different parts of the body. The outer layer will eventually form the brain, spinal cord, nerves, and skin. The middle layer becomes connective tissue, muscles, bones, the heart, and blood vessels. The inner layer develops into the lining of the digestive system, lungs, and major glands.
This three-layer structure is the blueprint for every organ your baby will have. By the end of week 4 (around day 28), one of the earliest milestones is already complete: the neural tube, which becomes the brain and spinal cord, closes entirely. Before it seals shut, this tube is actually filled with the same fluid that surrounds the embryo inside the amniotic cavity. Once it closes, the embryo’s developing nervous system becomes its own sealed environment.
A primitive version of the circulatory system is forming too. The cells that will become the heart are already starting to organize, though a true heartbeat won’t be detectable for another week or two.
The Support System Around the Embryo
The embryo doesn’t survive on its own at this point. Two key structures are doing the heavy lifting. The yolk sac provides early nutrients and helps produce blood cells before the placenta takes over. The amniotic cavity, a fluid-filled space surrounding the embryo, cushions and protects it as it grows. Both of these structures formed during the third week and are fully active by week 4.
The placenta is also beginning to develop from the outer cells of the embryo, but it won’t be functional for several more weeks. Until then, the yolk sac is the primary supply line.
What You Might Be Feeling
Four weeks is early enough that many people feel nothing unusual at all. The most noticeable sign is a missed period. Some people experience light spotting or mild cramping around this time, which can be confusing because it mimics the start of a period. This spotting happens when the embryo attaches to the uterine lining. It’s lighter than a normal period, often just a few spots of pink or brown, and lasts a day or two at most.
Other early symptoms vary widely. Breast tenderness, fatigue, and mild bloating are common but not universal. Nausea, the hallmark of early pregnancy, usually doesn’t kick in until closer to week 6.
Pregnancy Tests at 4 Weeks
Week 4 is when home pregnancy tests become reliable. These tests detect a hormone produced by the developing placenta, and at 4 weeks, levels of that hormone range from 0 to 750 units per liter of blood. That’s a wide range because levels vary significantly from one pregnancy to another and rise rapidly day by day.
Most home pregnancy tests are 98% to 99% accurate when used correctly, and the best time to take one is after you’ve actually missed your period. Testing a day or two early can produce a false negative simply because hormone levels haven’t risen high enough to trigger the test strip. If you get a negative result but your period still doesn’t arrive, testing again in two or three days often gives a clearer answer.
Why Folic Acid Matters Right Now
The neural tube closes by the end of week 4, which makes this one of the most critical windows for folic acid intake. This B vitamin helps prevent serious defects in the brain and spinal cord. The CDC recommends 400 micrograms daily for anyone who could become pregnant, ideally starting before conception. Since the neural tube forms before most people even know they’re pregnant, this is one reason prenatal vitamins are recommended well in advance of a planned pregnancy.
If you’re just finding out you’re pregnant at 4 weeks and haven’t been taking folic acid, starting now still matters. Neural tube development continues through the early weeks, and adequate folic acid supports healthy cell division throughout the first trimester.
