The good news is that the liver recovers faster than most organs. Research reviewed by the Cleveland Clinic shows that liver function begins to improve in as little as two to three weeks after you stop drinking. A review of multiple studies found that two to four weeks of abstinence by heavy drinkers was enough to reduce inflammation and bring down elevated liver enzymes.

Lose Weight to Reverse Fat Buildup

The method of weight loss matters less than the result: calorie reduction, increased physical activity, or both will work. The only small improvement seen in one subgroup was negligible in clinical terms and disappeared entirely when researchers limited the analysis to higher-quality studies.
More concerning, some popular “detox” ingredients can actively harm your liver. Medical literature has documented liver injury from turmeric supplements (particularly concentrated extracts), green tea extracts, kava, CBD oil, kratom, and weight-loss products including those containing Garcinia cambogia. Herbal and dietary supplements are now one of the leading causes of drug-induced liver injury. The irony is real: supplements marketed to “cleanse” your liver are among the things most likely to damage it.
How to Know If Your Liver Needs Attention
Liver damage rarely causes symptoms until it’s advanced. The most reliable way to check on your liver is through a simple blood test that measures enzyme levels. Standard ranges for the most common markers are:
- ALT: 7 to 55 units per liter
- AST: 8 to 48 units per liter
- GGT: 8 to 61 units per liter
- Bilirubin: 0.1 to 1.2 milligrams per deciliter
These ranges apply to adult men and may differ slightly for women and children. Elevated numbers, particularly ALT and GGT, often indicate that your liver is under stress from fat accumulation, alcohol, medications, or inflammation. A single elevated reading isn’t necessarily alarming, but persistently high levels signal that something needs to change.
