Most water weight responds quickly to a few straightforward changes in diet, activity, and sleep. Unlike fat loss, which happens gradually over weeks, water weight can shift by several pounds in a single day depending on what you eat, how much you move, and where you are in your hormonal cycle. Understanding what causes your body to hold onto extra fluid makes it much easier to let it go.
Why Your Body Holds Extra Water
Your body constantly adjusts its fluid balance based on signals from hormones, minerals, and your nervous system. When something tips that balance, fluid accumulates in the spaces between your cells (called extracellular fluid), and you notice it as puffiness, tighter rings, or a higher number on the scale.

When you eat a high-sodium meal, your body pulls in extra fluid to keep the concentration of sodium in your blood within a narrow range. That fluid is what makes you feel bloated the morning after salty takeout.
Most people consume well over the recommended 2,300 mg of sodium per day, and the bulk of it comes from processed and restaurant food rather than the salt shaker. Cutting back doesn’t require perfection. Cooking more meals at home, rinsing canned beans and vegetables, and choosing lower-sodium versions of sauces and condiments can make a noticeable difference within a day or two. When you reduce sodium intake, your kidneys respond by releasing the extra fluid they were holding, and the scale drops accordingly.
Understand the Carb-Water Connection
Every gram of glycogen (the stored form of carbohydrate in your muscles and liver) binds roughly 3 to 4 grams of water. This is why people on low-carb diets see dramatic weight loss in the first week: they’re burning through glycogen stores, and the water attached to that glycogen leaves with it.
This also explains why a single high-carb day can add several pounds overnight. If your muscles store an extra 200 grams of glycogen after a big pasta dinner, that brings along 600 to 800 grams of water, easily adding 2 pounds to the scale by morning. That weight isn’t fat. It will come back off as your body uses that stored energy.

Drink More Water, Not Less
It sounds counterintuitive, but drinking more water helps you shed water weight. That same hormone also stimulates cortisol release through the stress-response system, creating a cycle where dehydration promotes both fluid retention and elevated stress hormones.

Over time, disrupted sleep can lead to erratic fluid shifts where you lose water at night but retain it during the day. Getting 7 to 9 hours of consistent sleep helps your body maintain a steady fluid rhythm and reduces the cortisol spikes that compound retention.
Move Your Body
Exercise reduces water weight through multiple pathways at once. You lose fluid directly through sweat. Physical activity also improves circulation, which helps move fluid out of the tissues where it pools (particularly in the legs and feet) and back into the bloodstream where your kidneys can filter and excrete it. Even a 20-to-30-minute walk can reduce puffiness in your lower body if you’ve been sitting all day.
More intense exercise burns through glycogen stores, releasing the water bound to them. This is why a hard workout can drop the scale by a pound or two within hours. That’s almost entirely water, not fat, but if your goal is to reduce visible bloating for a specific event, it works.
Hormonal Water Weight in Women
If you menstruate, you’ve likely noticed your weight fluctuates with your cycle. Progesterone, which peaks after ovulation and stays elevated until your period starts, makes your body more prone to retaining water. For the vast majority of people, though, water weight is a normal and temporary fluctuation. Reducing sodium, staying hydrated, sleeping well, managing stress, and exercising regularly will keep it in check without any drastic measures.
