Healing after CO2 laser resurfacing typically takes one to two weeks for the skin to close over, but the choices you make during that window can meaningfully shorten your downtime. From how you clean your skin to what you put on it, each step either supports or slows the repair process. Here’s what actually makes a difference.
What Normal Healing Looks Like
In the first few days, your skin will look raw, swollen, and possibly ooze. A crust forms over the treated area, and the skin underneath may appear red or blackish. This crust gradually lifts on its own over one to two weeks as new skin grows beneath it. Redness can linger well beyond that initial healing window, sometimes for weeks or even a few months, but the critical repair phase is those first 7 to 14 days.
Understanding this timeline helps you set realistic expectations. The goal isn’t to eliminate redness in three days. It’s to give your skin the best possible environment to rebuild itself without complications that would set you back further.
Keep the Wound Clean With Vinegar Soaks
The single most important thing you can do during the first week is keep your skin meticulously clean. Many dermatologists recommend diluted white vinegar soaks rather than traditional soap and water. The standard ratio is one teaspoon of plain white vinegar mixed into two cups of water. You soak or gently press a cloth to your face with this solution four to eight times a day.
That frequency sounds like a lot, and it is. But this isn’t just about hygiene. The mild acidity creates an environment that discourages bacterial growth on raw, vulnerable skin. Infection is the most common cause of scarring after CO2 laser, and it typically shows up as a localized area that simply won’t heal while everything around it progresses normally. Staying on top of cleansing is the most effective way to prevent that.
Choose Your Barrier Ointment Carefully
After cleansing, your skin needs a barrier to lock in moisture and protect the new tissue forming underneath. Petroleum-based ointments like Aquaphor have long been the default, but silicone-based gels are worth asking your provider about. In split-face studies where patients applied petroleum on one side and a silicone-based gel on the other after laser resurfacing, the silicone side consistently showed less redness and less post-treatment darkening of the skin. A separate study on CO2 fractional laser patients found that silicone gel also reduced pigment changes and surface-level inflammation more effectively than petroleum jelly.
Whatever you use, apply it generously and reapply after every vinegar soak. The goal is to keep the healing skin continuously moist. Letting it dry out and crack slows re-epithelialization and increases the risk of scarring.
Consider Hypochlorous Acid Spray
Hypochlorous acid is a compound your own immune cells produce to fight bacteria. Stabilized versions are now available as over-the-counter facial sprays, and they’ve shown real promise for post-laser recovery. The compound kills a broad range of bacteria without damaging your own healing tissue, and it helps calm the inflammatory response at the same time.
In clinical use after laser procedures, patients spray it directly onto the face twice daily for one week. It’s gentle enough to use alongside your other wound care products and works well as an extra layer of infection prevention between vinegar soaks. Several brands are widely available at pharmacies, typically marketed as wound care or post-procedure sprays.
Ask About PRP at Your Procedure
If you haven’t had your treatment yet, this one requires advance planning. Platelet-rich plasma, drawn from your own blood and applied to the skin immediately after laser treatment, has been shown to shorten the overall healing timeline. In a controlled study, patients who received PRP after CO2 laser had redness lasting about 8.3 days compared to 9.1 days without it. Swelling resolved in 7.3 days versus 7.9 days, and crusting cleared in 7.2 days versus 7.9 days. Those differences were statistically significant.
The reductions may sound modest, but when you’re counting down the days until you can go back to work or be seen in public, shaving nearly a full day off each phase of recovery adds up. PRP also reduced pore coarseness and pigmentation issues caused by the laser itself. It’s applied as a thin coating right after the procedure and left under gauze for 20 to 30 minutes, so it needs to be arranged with your provider in advance.
Try Red Light Therapy Starting Day One
Low-level LED light therapy at 635 nanometers (a red wavelength) can reduce the intensity and duration of post-laser redness when used daily during the first week. In a pilot study on patients with medium to darker skin tones, one half of each person’s face received LED treatment immediately after CO2 laser and then daily for seven days. By day four, the LED-treated side was measurably less red than the untreated side, and the difference persisted through the study.
At-home red light devices in this wavelength range are widely available. If you’re considering one, look for a panel or mask that delivers light in the 630 to 640 nanometer range. Sessions are typically 10 to 20 minutes. Starting the day of your procedure and continuing daily for a week gives you the best chance of replicating what the research showed.
Protect Your Skin From the Sun Aggressively
New skin after CO2 laser is extraordinarily sensitive to UV light. Sun exposure during the healing period is the fastest route to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, the dark patches that can take months to fade and are especially common in people with medium to darker skin tones. This isn’t the time for “I’ll just be outside for a few minutes.” Even brief, incidental exposure matters.
For the first one to two weeks while your skin is still crusted and raw, physical avoidance is your best strategy: stay indoors during peak sun hours, wear a wide-brimmed hat, and use window shades. Once your skin has closed over enough to tolerate sunscreen, apply a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher every single day, even if you’re mostly indoors. Continue this for at least three months, longer if redness or pigmentation changes are still present. Mineral sunscreens with zinc oxide tend to be better tolerated on sensitive post-procedure skin.
Reduce Swelling With Elevation and Ice
Swelling peaks in the first 48 to 72 hours and can make your face feel tight and uncomfortable. Sleeping with your head elevated on two or three pillows helps fluid drain away from the treated area overnight. Some people find a wedge pillow more comfortable than stacking standard pillows, which tend to shift during the night.
Cold compresses can also help during the first few days. Wrap ice packs in a soft cloth and hold them gently near (not directly on) the treated skin for 10 to 15 minutes at a time. Avoid pressing hard against the raw surface.
Recognize Complications Early
Knowing what’s normal and what isn’t can save you from a prolonged recovery. Infection after CO2 laser often looks like a patch that falls behind the rest of your face in healing. While the surrounding skin progresses through its stages, one area stays raw or gets worse.
Yeast infections on healing skin can be subtle, showing up as persistent redness and itching that doesn’t improve with standard wound care. Herpes simplex virus can reactivate and spread rapidly across laser-treated skin, which is why most providers prescribe antiviral medication before the procedure. If you weren’t given antivirals and have any history of cold sores, contact your provider.
Contact dermatitis is another complication that mimics normal healing. If you develop new itching, burning, or worsening redness after introducing a skincare product, stop using it. The challenge is that post-laser skin is already red and swollen, making it hard to tell irritation from expected healing. A good rule: if one area is getting dramatically worse while the rest improves, or if symptoms suddenly escalate several days in, something beyond normal healing is happening.
