Your body gives several reliable signals when ovulation is approaching or happening, from changes in vaginal discharge to a slight rise in body temperature. The most practical sign to watch for is cervical mucus that becomes clear, slippery, and stretchy, resembling raw egg whites. That texture typically appears in the three to four days surrounding ovulation, and it’s one of the easiest markers to check without buying anything.
Cervical Mucus: The Most Accessible Sign
Your cervical mucus changes in a predictable pattern throughout your cycle, and learning to read it is one of the simplest ways to identify your fertile window. In a typical 28-day cycle, here’s what to expect:
- Days 1 to 4 (after your period): Dry or tacky, white or slightly yellow.
- Days 4 to 6: Sticky, slightly damp, white.
- Days 7 to 9: Creamy, like yogurt. Wet and cloudy.
- Days 10 to 14: Slippery, stretchy, and clear, like raw egg whites. This is your peak fertility window.
- Days 15 to 28: Dry again until your next period.
The egg-white stage is the one that matters most. That slippery consistency helps sperm travel more easily through the reproductive tract. You’ll typically notice it for about three to four days. Once the mucus dries up and turns thick or pasty again, ovulation has already passed.
To check, you can simply look at the discharge on toilet paper or between your fingers. If it stretches an inch or more without breaking, you’re likely in your most fertile window.
Ovulation Predictor Kits
Over-the-counter ovulation predictor kits (OPKs) work by detecting a hormone called luteinizing hormone (LH) in your urine. Your body releases a surge of LH roughly 24 to 48 hours before ovulation, so a positive test means the egg is about to be released soon.
Not all kits perform equally, though. Research presented to the Association for Diagnostics and Laboratory Medicine found that of three digital ovulation tests available in the U.S., only one reliably detected ovulation to within one day in about 95% of women tested. The other two hit that accuracy mark in only about half of women. If you’re relying on an OPK, choosing a well-reviewed digital test matters more than you might expect.
For the best results, start testing a few days before you expect to ovulate. In a 28-day cycle, that means starting around day 10 or 11. Test at roughly the same time each day, and follow the instructions on your specific brand for when to use morning versus afternoon urine.
Basal Body Temperature
Your resting body temperature shifts slightly after ovulation, rising by less than half a degree Fahrenheit (about 0.3°C). It’s a small change, which is why you need a special basal body thermometer that reads to two decimal places and why you need to take your temperature first thing in the morning before getting out of bed.
The catch with this method is that the temperature rise happens after the egg has already been released, so it confirms ovulation rather than predicting it. Over several months of tracking, though, you can spot patterns in your cycle and anticipate when ovulation is likely to occur. If your temperature consistently rises around day 15, for instance, you know your fertile window falls in the days leading up to that shift.
Ovulation Pain
Some women feel a distinct twinge or cramp on one side of their lower abdomen around the time of ovulation. This sensation, sometimes called mittelschmerz (German for “middle pain”), happens about 14 days before your next period. It can feel dull and achy like mild menstrual cramps, or sharp and sudden. The pain usually lasts anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours, though it occasionally lingers for a day or two.
Not everyone experiences it, and those who do may only notice it in some cycles. If you do feel it consistently at the midpoint of your cycle and it resolves on its own, it’s a useful secondary clue. Pain that’s severe, accompanied by fever or nausea, or that shows up at other points in your cycle is something different and worth getting checked out.
Cervical Position
Your cervix itself changes during ovulation in ways you can feel with a clean finger. Around your fertile window, the cervix moves higher in the vaginal canal, becomes softer (more like the texture of your lips rather than the tip of your nose), and opens slightly. You’ll also notice more of that slippery mucus at this time.
This method takes some practice. You’ll need to check your cervix at roughly the same time each day over several cycles before the differences become obvious. It works best as a supporting signal alongside mucus tracking or OPKs rather than as a standalone method.
The Fertile Window Is Wider Than You Think
Ovulation itself is a single event, and the released egg survives for only about 12 to 24 hours. But sperm can live inside the reproductive tract for three to five days. That means your total fertile window is roughly six days: the five days before ovulation plus the day of ovulation itself. Having sex in the days leading up to ovulation, not just on the day it happens, gives you the best chance of conception.
This is also why methods that predict ovulation (like OPKs and mucus tracking) tend to be more useful than methods that only confirm it after the fact (like basal body temperature). By the time your temperature spikes, the fertile window has already closed for that cycle.
Combining Methods for Better Accuracy
No single sign is perfectly reliable on its own. Cervical mucus can be affected by infections, medications, or arousal fluid. OPKs can miss the surge if you test at the wrong time. Temperature readings get thrown off by poor sleep, alcohol, or illness the night before.
Using two or three methods together gives you a much clearer picture. A practical approach: start with daily mucus observations, add OPK testing as you approach your expected fertile window, and track basal temperature to confirm ovulation happened. After a few cycles, you’ll have a solid sense of your personal pattern.
One method to skip: saliva ferning microscopes. These pocket-sized devices claim to detect ovulation by showing a fern-like crystal pattern in dried saliva. The FDA notes that not all women produce a visible ferning pattern, and the results can be disrupted by eating, drinking, brushing your teeth, or even smoking. The agency specifically warns against using saliva tests for pregnancy prevention because they aren’t reliable enough.
