The fastest way to fall asleep is to lower your core body temperature, calm your nervous system, and give your brain something boring to do. Most people who struggle to fall asleep are fighting one or more of these three things without realizing it. The good news is that each one has a concrete fix, and stacking several of them together can cut the time it takes to drift off from 30+ minutes to under 10.

Cool Your Body Down First

Your core body temperature needs to drop for sleep to begin. This isn’t optional; it’s how the process works biologically. When your body can’t cool itself, you stay stuck in a wakeful state no matter how tired you feel. Keep your bedroom between 60 and 67°F (15 to 19°C). If that sounds cold, it is. Most people keep their rooms too warm for good sleep.

One of the most effective tricks is counterintuitive: take a warm shower or bath one to two hours before bed. A meta-analysis of existing research found that water temperatures of 104 to 109°F (40 to 42.5°C) for as little as 10 minutes significantly shortened the time it took people to fall asleep. Use a Breathing Pattern to Trigger Relaxation

Your nervous system has two modes: alert and restful. Slow, structured breathing forces a switch into the restful one. The 4-7-8 technique is the most widely recommended version for sleep. Inhale through your nose for 4 counts, hold for 7 counts, and exhale slowly through your mouth for 8 counts. Repeat three or four cycles.

Give Your Brain Something Meaningless to Chew On

Racing thoughts are the number one reason people lie awake even when their body is tired. The problem isn’t that your brain is active. It’s that it’s active about things that matter to you: tomorrow’s meeting, an unresolved argument, a financial worry. You can’t force yourself to stop thinking, but you can redirect your thoughts toward something so boring your brain gives up and drifts off.

A technique called cognitive shuffling does exactly this. Pick a random, emotionally neutral word like “table.” Take the first letter, T, and visualize as many objects as you can that start with it: tree, turtle, toaster, trumpet. Spend a few seconds picturing each one before moving to the next. When you run out, move to the second letter, A, and repeat. The key is choosing dull, everyday objects rather than anything emotionally charged.

This works by mimicking what your brain does naturally as you fall asleep. By deliberately producing the same kind of random, unrelated imagery, you’re essentially faking the brain pattern that precedes sleep. Sleep researcher Luc Beaudoin, who developed the technique, describes it as sending your brain a cue that it’s time to shut down. The randomness is the point: it displaces the structured, worried thinking that keeps you alert.

Relax Your Muscles in Sequence

Physical tension you’re not even aware of can keep you from falling asleep. Progressive muscle relaxation works by systematically tensing and then releasing each muscle group, which makes it easier to notice and let go of that hidden tension. Start at your forehead: squeeze the muscles for five seconds, then release. Move to your jaw, neck, shoulders, arms and hands, chest and abdomen, and finally your legs and feet.

The release phase is where the magic happens. After you tense a muscle and let go, it relaxes more deeply than it was before you started. By the time you’ve worked through your whole body, you’re physically limp in a way that’s hard to achieve just by lying still and willing yourself to relax. Pair this with slow breathing for a compounding effect.

Manage Light Before You Get Into Bed

White noise contains all audible frequencies at equal intensity. Pink noise emphasizes lower frequencies, producing a deeper, more natural sound, like steady rain or wind through trees. Brown noise goes even deeper and sounds rougher, closer to a low rumble.

There’s no strong evidence yet that one color of noise is better than another for falling asleep. What matters more is volume. Keep it no louder than a background conversation, and place the speaker in a corner of your room rather than next to your head. The goal is to create a consistent sound floor, not to add another stimulus.

Consider Magnesium as a Nightly Supplement

Magnesium plays a role in the nervous system processes that promote relaxation and sleep. If your diet is low in it (and many people’s are), supplementing may help. Mayo Clinic recommends 250 to 500 milligrams taken as a single dose at bedtime. Magnesium glycinate is a common choice because it’s gentle on the stomach. Magnesium citrate has more research behind it for sleep but can act as a laxative, so it’s a better fit if constipation is already an issue for you.

Magnesium isn’t a sleeping pill and won’t knock you out. Think of it more as removing a bottleneck. If low magnesium levels were part of what kept your nervous system revved up at night, correcting that deficiency allows the other techniques on this list to work the way they should.
