The most reliable way to know if you’re pregnant is to take a home pregnancy test after a missed period. These tests detect a hormone called hCG that your body only produces in significant amounts during pregnancy, and they’re about 99% accurate when used at the right time. But even before you take a test, your body may be sending early signals worth paying attention to.
The Earliest Signs to Watch For
A missed period is the most obvious clue, especially if your cycle is usually regular. If a week or more has passed without the start of an expected period, pregnancy is a real possibility. But several symptoms can show up even before that missed period or right around the same time.
Light spotting, sometimes called implantation bleeding, can happen about 10 to 14 days after conception, right around when you’d normally expect your period. This is easy to confuse with a light period, but there are clear differences. Implantation bleeding is pink or brown (not bright or dark red), lasts only a few hours to about two days, and is so light it won’t soak through a pad. If you’re seeing heavier flow, clots, or bright red blood, that’s more consistent with a regular period.
Breast tenderness and swelling often appear early, sometimes within the first couple of weeks. Fatigue hits early too, often feeling more intense than typical tiredness. Nausea, the symptom most people associate with pregnancy, typically starts one to two months in, though some people notice it sooner. Other early signs include bloating, mild cramping, increased urination, moodiness, food aversions, constipation, and even a stuffy nose from increased blood flow swelling the membranes in your nasal passages.
The tricky part is that many of these symptoms overlap with premenstrual symptoms. Bloating, cramping, breast soreness, and mood changes happen before plenty of periods. No single symptom confirms pregnancy on its own.
When and How to Take a Home Test
Home pregnancy tests work by detecting hCG in your urine. In non-pregnant women, hCG levels sit below 5 mIU/mL. By three weeks of pregnancy (about one week after conception), levels can range from 5 to 72 mIU/mL, and they climb rapidly from there, potentially reaching thousands by week five.
You can get a positive result as early as 10 days after conception, but testing that early increases the chance of a false negative simply because hCG levels may not be high enough yet. For the most accurate result, wait until after you’ve missed your period. At that point, all major test brands should give you a reliable reading.
For the best accuracy, test with your first morning urine, when hCG is most concentrated. Follow the instructions on the package exactly, including how long to wait before reading the result. A faint positive line still counts as a positive. If you get a negative result but your period still hasn’t arrived a few days later, test again.
What Can Throw Off Your Results
False negatives are more common than false positives and usually happen because you tested too early. Your hCG levels simply haven’t risen enough for the test to pick up.
False positives are rarer but do happen. The main causes include a chemical pregnancy (where an egg was fertilized but didn’t successfully implant in the uterus), a recent miscarriage or birth (hCG can linger in your system for up to six weeks after a pregnancy ends), and certain medications. Fertility treatments involving hCG injections are the most common medication culprit, but antihistamines, antianxiety medications, antipsychotics, diuretics, and some Parkinson’s disease medications can also trigger a false positive. An expired or defective test is another possibility, so always check the expiration date before buying.
A Subtler Clue: Your Basal Body Temperature
If you’ve been tracking your basal body temperature (your temperature first thing in the morning before getting out of bed), you may notice a pattern. After ovulation, your temperature rises slightly and stays elevated for about two weeks. If you’re not pregnant, it drops back down right before your period starts. If you are pregnant, it stays elevated because your body keeps producing progesterone to support the pregnancy. Seeing consistently high temperatures past the point where your period should have arrived is a meaningful signal, though it’s not definitive on its own.
Some people also notice changes in cervical mucus, which may stay wetter or become clumpy instead of drying up after ovulation. But cervical mucus varies so much from person to person that it’s not a reliable way to predict pregnancy.
How Pregnancy Gets Confirmed
A positive home test is a strong indicator, but a blood test at your doctor’s office measures the exact amount of hCG in your blood and can detect pregnancy even earlier than a urine test. Blood tests are especially useful when there’s uncertainty, such as very early pregnancy or after fertility treatment.
Ultrasound provides visual confirmation, but it follows a specific timeline. At about five and a half weeks after your last period, a transvaginal ultrasound can typically show a gestational sac with a small yolk sac inside it. By about six weeks, a tiny embryo (called a fetal pole) becomes visible. Once that embryo measures more than 7 mm, a heartbeat should be detectable. Going in for an ultrasound too early, before these structures have had time to develop, can cause unnecessary worry when nothing is visible yet.
Putting the Pieces Together
No single symptom or sign confirms pregnancy with certainty. The most practical approach is to pay attention to what your body is telling you, then verify with a test at the right time. If your period is late, you’re experiencing some of the symptoms described above, and a home test comes back positive, pregnancy is very likely. A blood test and eventually an ultrasound will give you full confirmation and help establish how far along you are.
If you’re getting negative tests but still feel something is off, testing again a few days later accounts for the possibility that your hCG levels were just too low the first time around. By four weeks of pregnancy, hCG can range from 10 to over 700 mIU/mL, so levels vary enormously from person to person at the same stage.
