A carat is a unit of weight for gemstones, and one carat equals exactly 200 milligrams, or one-fifth of a gram. It’s the universal standard for measuring diamonds, sapphires, emeralds, and other precious stones. But “carat” also gets confused with “karat,” which measures something completely different: the purity of gold. Here’s how both systems work and why the numbers on a jewelry tag matter more than most people realize.
What a Carat Actually Measures
A carat is purely a measure of weight, not size. One carat equals 200 milligrams. The system traces back to early gem traders who used carob seeds as counterweights on balance scales. Carob seeds are remarkably uniform in weight, making them a reliable natural standard long before precision instruments existed.
Grading laboratories weigh diamonds to extreme precision. A stone listed as 1.00 carat weighs exactly 0.20 grams. That sounds tiny, and it is. For context, a standard paperclip weighs about five carats.
Why Carat Weight Doesn’t Equal Size
This is the detail that trips up most shoppers. Two one-carat stones can look noticeably different in size depending on the type of gemstone and how it’s cut. That’s because carat measures weight, and different materials have different densities.
A round diamond weighing one carat measures roughly 6.5 mm across. A sapphire of the same 6.5 mm diameter weighs about 1.14 carats because sapphire is denser. An opal at that same diameter weighs only 0.61 carats because it’s much lighter. So if you’re comparing stones across gem types, carat weight alone won’t tell you how big something looks on your finger.
Even within diamonds, cut proportions change the visual size. A one-carat diamond cut too deep carries more weight in its base, making it appear smaller from the top than a well-proportioned stone of the same weight. A half-carat round diamond typically measures about 5 mm across, a one-carat stone about 6.5 mm, and a two-carat stone about 8 mm. The jump in visual size is less dramatic than you’d expect from doubling the weight.
How Carat Weight Affects Price
Diamond prices don’t scale in a straight line as weight goes up. Instead, they jump sharply at certain thresholds the industry calls “magic numbers.” These fall at 0.50, 1.00, 1.50, and 2.00 carats. A diamond weighing 0.99 carats and one weighing 1.00 carats look virtually identical to the naked eye, but the one-carat stone costs meaningfully more per carat simply because it crosses that psychological boundary.
This creates a practical buying strategy. A diamond weighing 0.95 carats will cost less per carat than a 1.00-carat stone while appearing nearly the same size. The same logic applies at every magic number. If you’re shopping with a budget in mind, landing just below these thresholds can save hundreds or even thousands of dollars without a visible tradeoff.
Price also depends heavily on the other quality factors: how well the stone is cut, how clear it is, and its color grade. A flawless half-carat diamond can easily cost more than a lower-quality one-carat stone. Carat weight gets the most attention, but it’s just one piece of the equation.
Total Carat Weight vs. Single Stone Weight
When a ring is described as “1.5 carats total weight,” that number refers to every stone in the setting combined. A halo ring might have a 0.80-carat center diamond surrounded by thirty tiny accent stones that add up to 0.70 carats, giving a total carat weight of 1.50. That looks very different from a single 1.50-carat solitaire, even though the listed carat number is the same.
Jewelry listings sometimes abbreviate this as “ctw” or “tcw.” If the listing doesn’t specify the center stone weight separately, ask. The distinction matters because a single larger stone is rarer and more expensive per carat than many small stones adding up to the same total.
Karat: The Gold Purity System
Karat (spelled with a “k”) has nothing to do with weight. It measures how much pure gold is in an alloy, on a scale of 24 parts. Pure gold is 24 karat, meaning all 24 parts are gold. From there, the math is simple: divide the karat number by 24 to get the percentage of gold.
- 24K: 100% gold, soft and rarely used for everyday jewelry
- 18K: 75% gold (18 ÷ 24 = 0.75), a common choice for fine jewelry
- 14K: about 58% gold (14 ÷ 24 = 0.583), the most popular in the U.S.
- 10K: about 42% gold, the minimum to be legally sold as gold jewelry in the U.S.
The remaining percentage is made up of other metals like copper, silver, or zinc. These alloys make the gold harder and more durable, which is why 14K and 18K rings hold up better to daily wear than pure 24K gold. They also allow for color variations: rose gold gets its pink tone from a higher copper content in the mix.
If you see a stamp like “750” inside a ring, that’s the decimal gold content expressed as a three-digit number. Drop the last zero, and you get 75%, which is 18K. Similarly, “585” means 58.5%, or 14K. European jewelry tends to use these numeric stamps, while U.S. pieces more commonly show the karat number.
Carat vs. Karat: Which Spelling When
In standard usage, “carat” refers to gemstone weight and “karat” refers to gold purity. Using “karat” for diamonds is considered incorrect. Using “carat” for gold, however, is technically acceptable, and you’ll see it in British English and older references. In practice, the “k” spelling for gold has become the clearer convention, especially in American English, because it eliminates ambiguity. If you see “ct” on a jewelry tag, it refers to stone weight. If you see “K” or “kt,” it refers to gold purity.
