Roughly one in five cats will be diagnosed with cancer during their lifetime. That rate is similar to dogs: a large California study covering two decades found cancer in about 17% of cats and 18% of dogs. While cancer can strike at any age, it overwhelmingly affects older cats, with the average age at diagnosis sitting right around 10 years old.
How Age Affects Cancer Risk
Cancer risk in cats climbs steadily with age. Research puts the average age of tumor diagnosis at 9.8 years, and for every additional year of life, the risk of a tumor being malignant increases by about 8%. That doesn’t mean young cats are immune. Blood and lymph system cancers tend to appear earlier, around age 7 to 8 on average, while skin and other solid tumors typically show up between ages 10 and 11.
This age pattern means cancer becomes a real consideration once your cat enters the senior years. Regular veterinary checkups become more important after age 7 or so, when subtle changes are easier to catch early.
The Most Common Types
Three cancers account for the majority of feline diagnoses: lymphoma, squamous cell carcinoma of the mouth, and mammary (breast) tumors.
Lymphoma is the single most common cancer in cats. It targets white blood cells and can develop almost anywhere in the body because those cells travel throughout it. The most frequent form is small cell gastrointestinal lymphoma, which grows in the lining of the stomach or intestines. Other forms affect the chest cavity, kidneys, and nasal passages. Cats with kidney lymphoma sometimes develop involvement in the brain and spinal cord as well. Testing for feline leukemia virus (FeLV) and feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) is standard during workup because these infections can play a role.
Oral squamous cell carcinoma is the most common malignant mouth tumor in cats, making up 46% to 61% of all oral tumors. Warning signs include swelling along the jaw or chin, difficulty eating or drinking, drooling, bad breath, and visible changes to the face. This cancer is aggressive and often diagnosed late because cats are skilled at hiding discomfort. Some researchers have investigated whether secondhand tobacco smoke raises the risk, but studies haven’t found a statistically significant link.
Mammary tumors are the third major category. Unlike in dogs, where roughly half of mammary tumors are benign, a high percentage of mammary tumors in cats are malignant. Spaying plays a clear protective role, but timing matters. Research shows a protective effect only when spaying happens before one year of age. Spaying after age two was actually associated with a higher risk compared to cats that were never spayed, possibly due to other health factors in that group. If you have a female kitten, early spaying is one of the most effective cancer prevention steps available.
Injection Site Sarcomas
Cats are uniquely susceptible to a rare tumor that can develop at the site of an injection, most often a vaccination. These injection site sarcomas are aggressive, locally invasive tumors. The estimated incidence in the United States is 1 to 4 cases per 10,000 vaccinated cats. Some estimates are even lower, around 0.3 cases per 10,000 vaccine doses.
The risk is real but extremely small, and it doesn’t change the recommendation to vaccinate. Veterinarians have adapted their protocols in response, giving certain vaccines in specific limb locations rather than between the shoulder blades, so that if a sarcoma does develop, surgical removal is more straightforward. If you notice a lump at a previous injection site that persists for more than three months, grows larger than two centimeters, or continues to increase in size one month after injection, have it evaluated.
Warning Signs to Watch For
Cats are notorious for masking illness, which makes owner awareness especially important. Unexplained weight loss is one of the most telling early signs. Cancer cells increase metabolic demands and interfere with nutrient absorption, so a cat can lose weight even while still eating normally.
Other signs that warrant a veterinary visit include:
- Lumps or bumps that are new, growing, or changing in texture
- Loss of appetite or difficulty eating
- Drooling, especially with blood or foul breath
- Rapid breathing (more than 40 breaths per minute at rest) or labored breathing
- Sudden abdominal bloating, which can indicate fluid buildup
- Difficulty urinating or defecating, potentially from a tumor creating a blockage
- Lameness that doesn’t resolve
- Yellowing of the skin, gums, or whites of the eyes
- Poor grooming, leading to a matted or unkempt coat
- Sores that won’t heal, particularly on the face or ears of white cats
None of these signs automatically mean cancer. Many have more common explanations. But persistent or worsening symptoms in a cat over seven deserve investigation, because early detection dramatically improves treatment options.
White Cats and Skin Cancer
White cats and cats with light-colored fur on their ears and noses face a specific additional risk. Non-healing sores or scaly patches on sun-exposed skin, particularly the ear tips and nose, can be squamous cell carcinoma of the skin. This is a different cancer from the oral form but shares the same cell type. Limiting sun exposure through indoor living or pet-safe sunscreen on vulnerable areas helps reduce this risk.
How Cats Compare to Dogs
The overall cancer rate in cats and dogs is remarkably similar. In a study of over 150,000 pets in California spanning 2000 to 2019, cancer was diagnosed in 17% of cats and 18.1% of dogs. The types of cancer differ between species, though. Dogs are far more prone to bone cancer and certain skin tumors, while cats see disproportionately high rates of lymphoma and oral squamous cell carcinoma. Cats also face the unique risk of injection site sarcomas, which are exceptionally rare in dogs.
One practical difference is that mammary tumors in cats are more likely to be malignant than in dogs, making early spaying and regular physical exams of the mammary chain especially valuable for cat owners.
