Cancer is one of the leading causes of death in dogs, and the risk varies dramatically depending on breed and size. Small breeds like Pomeranians and chihuahuas have roughly a 10% chance of dying from cancer, while larger breeds like Bernese mountain dogs face odds above 40%. Understanding which dogs are most at risk, what types of cancer are most frequent, and what to watch for can help you catch problems earlier.
How Size and Breed Affect Cancer Risk
A 2024 study from the University of California, Riverside found a clear pattern: bigger dogs get cancer more often. The smallest breeds had about a 10% cancer mortality rate, while many large and giant breeds exceeded 40%. But size alone doesn’t tell the whole story. Flat-coated retrievers had the highest cancer mortality of any breed studied, developing a type of soft tissue cancer at rates far higher than expected even for their size. Scottish terriers also stood out, getting more cancer than other small breeds, bucking the general trend.
Bone cancer (osteosarcoma) illustrates the size connection most starkly. A large study from the Royal Veterinary College found that osteosarcoma affects only about 0.037% of dogs in any given year, making it uncommon overall. But in giant breeds, the numbers jump dramatically. Scottish Deerhounds were 118 times more likely to develop osteosarcoma than mixed-breed dogs, with 3.28% affected each year. Leonbergers were 56 times more likely, Great Danes 34 times, and Rottweilers 27 times.
Mixed-breed dogs generally have lower cancer rates than purebreds, likely because their broader genetic diversity reduces the concentration of inherited cancer-predisposing mutations that can accumulate in closed breeding populations.
The Most Common Cancer Types in Dogs
Several cancers appear far more frequently than others in dogs. Lymphoma, mast cell tumors, hemangiosarcoma (a cancer of blood vessel walls), soft tissue sarcomas, mammary gland tumors, and melanoma are among the most diagnosed. Primary lung tumors, by contrast, account for only about 1% of all canine tumors, a sharp difference from humans, where lung cancer is the top cancer killer.
Lymphoma is one of the most recognizable canine cancers because it often causes visible swelling of the lymph nodes, particularly around the jaw, in front of the shoulders, and behind the knees. Mast cell tumors typically show up as lumps on or just under the skin and are the most common skin cancer in dogs. Hemangiosarcoma is particularly dangerous because it develops in internal organs like the spleen and heart, often growing silently until it causes a sudden crisis like internal bleeding.
Mammary gland tumors are largely preventable. Spaying a female dog before her first heat cycle dramatically reduces the risk, while the protective effect decreases with each subsequent cycle.
What Happens After a Cancer Diagnosis
Outcomes depend heavily on cancer type, stage at diagnosis, and treatment approach. Lymphoma is one of the better-studied examples. Dogs with B-cell lymphoma treated with multi-agent chemotherapy have a median survival time of about 12 months. Dogs with T-cell lymphoma, a less responsive form, typically survive 6 to 9 months with the same treatment. Dogs treated with steroids alone live a median of just 1 to 2 months.
Chemotherapy in dogs looks quite different from what most people imagine based on human cancer treatment. Dogs generally tolerate it well and rarely lose their fur (though some breeds with continuously growing coats, like poodles, can). Most dogs maintain a good quality of life during treatment, eating normally and staying active between visits.
For solid tumors like mast cell tumors or osteosarcoma, surgery is often the first step, sometimes followed by chemotherapy or radiation. The prognosis depends on whether the cancer has spread. A low-grade mast cell tumor removed with clean margins may never come back, while osteosarcoma has typically already spread microscopically by the time it’s found, making long-term survival more challenging even with aggressive treatment.
Early Warning Signs to Watch For
Cancer doesn’t always announce itself with an obvious lump. NC State Veterinary Hospital identifies ten warning categories worth knowing:
- Lumps and bumps that grow, change texture, or don’t resolve within a few weeks
- Abnormal odors from the mouth, nose, or rear end, which can signal cancers in those areas even without a visible mass
- Unusual discharges including blood, pus, or persistent vomiting and diarrhea
- Non-healing wounds that linger beyond a few days
- Unexplained weight loss not related to a diet change
- Appetite changes, especially difficulty eating or swallowing, which can point to oral tumors
- Coughing or labored breathing, sometimes caused by enlarged lymph nodes in the throat or cancer that has spread to the lungs
- Lethargy, reduced interest in walks, or more time spent sleeping
- Bathroom habit changes like blood in urine or stool, straining, or increased frequency
- Limping or signs of pain, which can indicate cancer in bone, muscle, or the nervous system
Many of these symptoms overlap with non-cancerous conditions. A lump is far more likely to be a harmless fatty growth (lipoma) than a malignant tumor, especially in older dogs. But any persistent or worsening symptom deserves a veterinary exam, because early detection is the single biggest factor in treatment success for most cancer types.
Blood Tests for Early Detection
A newer option for cancer screening is a liquid biopsy, a blood test that looks for fragments of tumor DNA circulating in the bloodstream. A large clinical validation study (the CANDiD study, covering over 1,000 dogs) found that this type of test correctly identified cancer about 55% of the time overall, with a very low false-positive rate of just 1.5%. That means a positive result is highly likely to be real, but a negative result doesn’t rule cancer out.
The test performed much better for aggressive cancers. For lymphoma, hemangiosarcoma, and osteosarcoma combined, the detection rate jumped to 85%. For the eight most common canine cancers as a group, it was about 62%. These tests are most useful as a screening tool for high-risk breeds or older dogs, not as a replacement for veterinary exams and imaging when symptoms are already present.
Age and the Rising Risk
Cancer risk climbs as dogs get older. Most canine cancers are diagnosed in dogs over the age of 7 or 8, and the risk continues to increase with each passing year. This is similar to the pattern in humans, where accumulated genetic damage over a lifetime eventually tips cells toward uncontrolled growth. Giant breeds, which age faster physiologically, tend to develop cancer at younger ages than small breeds.
Routine veterinary checkups become increasingly important as your dog ages. Many veterinarians recommend switching from annual to twice-yearly wellness exams around age 7, partly because cancer and other serious conditions become more likely. A physical exam can catch enlarged lymph nodes, abdominal masses, or skin tumors that you might not notice at home, especially under thick coats.
