How Common Is Lyme Disease in Dogs? Rates & Signs

Lyme disease is one of the most common tick-borne infections in dogs, but the rates vary dramatically depending on where you live. In high-risk areas of the northeastern and upper midwestern United States, anywhere from 10% to over 50% of dogs may test positive for exposure to the Lyme bacterium. The critical detail most dog owners don’t realize: the vast majority of dogs that test positive never get sick.

Exposure Rates vs. Actual Illness

There’s a significant gap between testing positive for Lyme and actually developing Lyme disease. Most estimates suggest that only about 5% to 10% of dogs exposed to the bacterium ever show clinical signs of illness. This means that even in areas where half of all dogs test positive on a screening test, only a small fraction of those dogs will limp, develop a fever, or need treatment.

Veterinary clinics routinely screen for Lyme exposure during annual wellness visits using a quick in-house blood test. These tests detect antibodies, which simply means the dog’s immune system encountered the bacterium at some point. A positive result doesn’t mean the dog is currently sick or will become sick. It does, however, confirm tick exposure and may prompt your vet to monitor for symptoms going forward.

Where Lyme Disease Is Most Common

Geography is the single biggest predictor of whether your dog will encounter Lyme. The blacklegged tick (also called the deer tick) is the only species that transmits the Lyme bacterium to dogs in the U.S., and these ticks are concentrated in specific regions. The highest rates of canine Lyme exposure are found in the Northeast (from Virginia up through Maine), the upper Midwest (Minnesota, Wisconsin), and parts of the mid-Atlantic states.

Dogs in the Southeast, Southwest, and West Coast have much lower exposure rates, though the range of blacklegged ticks has been expanding over the past two decades. If you’ve recently moved or travel with your dog to endemic areas, the risk profile changes accordingly. Dogs that spend time in wooded or brushy environments, tall grass, or areas with high deer populations face the greatest exposure.

How Dogs Get Infected

A tick must be attached and feeding for at least 24 hours before the Lyme bacterium can transfer into your dog’s body, and transmission more commonly occurs at 36 to 48 hours into the blood meal. This window is important because it means daily tick checks and prompt removal genuinely reduce the chance of infection. If you find and pull a tick within the first day, the likelihood of Lyme transmission drops substantially.

Dogs can’t catch Lyme from other dogs or from direct contact with wildlife. The only route is through the bite of an infected tick.

Signs of Lyme Disease in Dogs

When dogs do develop clinical Lyme disease, symptoms typically appear two to five months after the initial tick bite, which makes it difficult to connect the illness to a specific exposure. The most common signs include intermittent lameness that shifts from one leg to another, fever, loss of appetite, lethargy, swollen lymph nodes, and painful or swollen joints. Unlike the characteristic bullseye rash seen in humans, dogs rarely develop any visible skin reaction.

The lameness pattern is particularly distinctive. A dog might limp on a front leg for a few days, seem to improve, and then start favoring a back leg. This shifting, on-and-off lameness is one of the hallmarks that prompts veterinarians to test for Lyme.

Serious Complications Are Rare

About 1% to 5% of dogs infected with the Lyme bacterium develop a kidney condition called Lyme nephritis, which is the most dangerous complication. This can cause swelling in the legs, weight loss, vomiting, diarrhea, and in severe cases, kidney failure. Certain breeds, particularly Labrador Retrievers and Golden Retrievers, appear to be more susceptible to this kidney complication, though the reasons aren’t fully understood.

For the majority of dogs that develop symptoms, the prognosis with treatment is good. Most dogs improve noticeably within a few days of starting antibiotics, though the full course of treatment typically runs about four weeks. Some dogs experience recurring lameness episodes even after treatment, but life-threatening outcomes are uncommon.

Testing Accuracy

The standard in-clinic screening tests used at most veterinary offices have a sensitivity around 81%, meaning they correctly identify about four out of five truly positive dogs. Their specificity runs between 89% and 93%, so false positives are relatively uncommon. One practical advantage of newer test versions is their ability to distinguish between dogs that were vaccinated against Lyme and dogs that were actually infected, which prevents unnecessary concern after routine vaccination.

If your dog tests positive on a screening test but shows no symptoms, your vet will likely recommend monitoring rather than immediate treatment. Treating every positive dog with antibiotics is generally not recommended since most will never develop illness.

Prevention Options

Tick prevention products are the first line of defense. Monthly topical treatments, oral chew preventives, and tick collars all reduce the chance of a tick feeding long enough to transmit the bacterium. No single product is 100% effective, so combining tick prevention with regular tick checks after outdoor activity offers the best protection.

A Lyme vaccine is available for dogs and is commonly recommended in high-risk areas. One study in an endemic area of Connecticut found that vaccination reduced infection rates by about 60% compared to unvaccinated dogs. That’s meaningful protection, but it underscores why the vaccine works best as one layer in a broader prevention strategy rather than a standalone solution. Your vet can help you weigh whether vaccination makes sense based on your dog’s tick exposure level and geographic risk.
