The Bur Oak (Quercus macrocarpa) is a native North American tree known for its immense size, longevity, and resilience. It thrives across a vast range, from eastern forests to the Great Plains, often living for centuries. This hardiness against challenging environmental factors, including severe weather and poor soil conditions, is intrinsically linked to its highly developed root structure.

The Bur Oak’s roots are predominantly deep, meaning they are less likely to cause surface damage like heaving sidewalks or cracking foundations.

While the majority of absorbing rootlets are found in the top two feet of soil, the large, woody structural roots grow deeper, providing stability and accessing lower soil layers. Homeowners should aim to plant Bur Oaks at least 30 to 40 feet away from major structures and utility lines. Recognizing the extent of the below-ground structure is important for ensuring the tree’s long-term health in urban or suburban settings.
