Animals get mange when microscopic mites infest their skin, either by catching them from another animal or, in some cases, when mites already living harmlessly on their body multiply out of control. The type of mange depends on the mite species involved, and each spreads differently.
The Two Main Types of Mange
Mange isn’t a single disease. It’s a category of skin conditions caused by different mite species, and understanding which type you’re dealing with matters because the way animals “get” each one is fundamentally different.
Sarcoptic mange (also called scabies) is caused by Sarcoptes scabiei mites. These are invaders from the outside. Female mites burrow tunnels into the skin to lay eggs, and the entire life cycle, from egg to adult, takes 17 to 21 days and happens entirely on the host animal. This is the highly contagious form found on dogs, foxes, coyotes, and many other mammals worldwide.
Demodectic mange works completely differently. The mites responsible, Demodex canis in dogs, already live in small numbers inside the hair follicles and oil glands of virtually every dog. This is normal and usually causes zero problems. Demodectic mange develops when something goes wrong internally and those resident mites proliferate beyond what the immune system can keep in check.
How Sarcoptic Mange Spreads
Direct physical contact between animals is the primary route. When an infested animal touches, plays with, or sleeps near a healthy one, mites transfer to the new host. This is why sarcoptic mange tears through kennels, shelters, and wildlife populations so effectively.
Indirect spread is also possible, though less common. Mites can survive off a host for up to a few weeks under favorable conditions, meaning contaminated bedding, grooming tools, shared blankets, or even fences and transport vehicles can carry mites to a new animal. In wildlife, shared dens and burrows serve as transmission points. A fox using a burrow previously occupied by a mangy coyote can pick up mites from the environment without ever encountering the other animal directly.
For pets, wildlife is a significant source of exposure. Dogs that encounter foxes, coyotes, or raccoons (or simply investigate areas where these animals rest) can bring sarcoptic mange home. The mites don’t care about species boundaries and will readily hop between different mammals.
Why Demodectic Mange Develops
Since Demodex mites are already present on nearly every dog, transmission in the traditional sense only happens once: when a mother dog cuddles with her newborn puppies during the first few days of life. After that, the mites are a permanent, usually harmless resident. You cannot “catch” demodectic mange from another dog at the park.
The disease develops when the immune system fails to keep mite numbers in check. In puppies and young dogs, this is believed to stem from a genetic immunological defect. Their immune system simply isn’t equipped to maintain the normal balance, and the mites reproduce unchecked, causing inflammation and hair loss.
In adult dogs, the calculus is different and more concerning. A healthy adult dog should not develop demodectic mange. When it appears, it signals an underlying problem suppressing the immune system: cancer, liver or kidney disease, or a hormone imbalance. In shelter dogs, the compounding stress of abandonment, starvation, and poor living conditions can create enough immune suppression to trigger a case.
Mange in Livestock and Wildlife
A third type, psoroptic mange (known as “sheep scab” in sheep), is a major concern in agricultural settings. These mites spread through direct contact between animals and through contaminated fences, chutes, and trucks. They can survive off a host for up to 31 to 38 days, though they’re only capable of infesting a new animal during the first 15 to 16 days of that window.
What makes psoroptic mange particularly damaging in livestock is that not all infested animals show symptoms. Asymptomatic sheep can silently spread mites to the rest of a flock. Once clinical disease develops, affected sheep lose wool in tufts, develop large crusted lesions, lose weight from decreased appetite, and can become anemic and emaciated. Pregnant animals give birth to smaller lambs, and perinatal lamb mortality rises. In young lambs, rapid weight loss and death can follow infestation.
In wild animal populations, sarcoptic mange can be devastating. It spreads through social contact and shared habitat, and because wild animals can’t receive treatment, severe cases lead to hair loss, hypothermia, starvation, and death. Outbreaks in fox, coyote, and wolf populations can reduce local numbers dramatically.
Can Humans Catch Mange From Animals?
Mites from animals can transfer to human skin, but they can’t complete their life cycle on a human host. If you handle a pet or wild animal with sarcoptic mange, the mites may cause redness, irritation, and intense itching that lasts several days. This reaction is essentially an allergic response and resolves on its own without special medication, because the mites die off without being able to reproduce on human skin.
Human scabies, by contrast, is caused by a variant of the same mite species that has adapted specifically to people and spreads readily between human hosts. The animal version is a temporary nuisance, not an ongoing infestation.
What Recovery Looks Like
For sarcoptic mange, treatment involves killing the mites with prescription medications. Modern oral treatments are highly effective, with mite counts dropping by over 97% within the first two weeks and reaching complete elimination by around 44 to 84 days, depending on the specific medication. Hair regrowth and skin healing follow as mite numbers fall, with significant visible improvement typically apparent within the first month.
Demodectic mange treatment follows a similar timeline for mite clearance, but addressing the underlying immune issue matters just as much. In puppies, the immune system often matures and catches up, and many cases of localized demodectic mange resolve without aggressive intervention. In adult dogs, identifying and treating whatever is suppressing the immune system is essential for lasting recovery.
Any bedding, grooming tools, or shared spaces should be thoroughly cleaned during treatment to prevent reinfestation from mites lingering in the environment, particularly for the sarcoptic form.
