How Do Blind People Text on Their Phones?

Blind people text using the same smartphones everyone else uses, just with different input methods. Built-in screen readers, on-screen braille keyboards, voice dictation, and physical braille displays all make texting fully accessible without any vision. Most blind texters use some combination of these tools depending on the situation.

Screen Readers: VoiceOver and TalkBack

Every iPhone ships with VoiceOver, and every Android phone includes TalkBack. These screen readers turn the entire phone into an audio-guided interface. When texting, the phone speaks each letter aloud as you navigate the keyboard, then confirms your selection when you type it.

The gesture system replaces visual scanning. You swipe right to move to the next item on the keyboard and swipe left to go back. When you land on the letter you want, the phone announces it, and you double-tap to type it. There’s also a faster method called split-tapping: you hold one finger on the letter while tapping anywhere else on the screen with a second finger. This lets experienced users move quickly across the keyboard without lifting and repositioning between every character. To dismiss alerts or go back a screen, you move two fingers in a quick “z” motion.

The learning curve is real. The Carroll Center for the Blind, a major training organization, expects applicants to its screen reader program to have at least six months of experience with VoiceOver or TalkBack and a minimum typing speed of 30 words per minute with 90% accuracy. That benchmark gives a sense of how much practice fluent screen reader texting requires, but also shows that skilled users can type at a pace that keeps up with normal conversation.

Braille Screen Input

This is one of the more remarkable features most sighted people never hear about. Both iOS and Android can turn the phone’s touchscreen into a six-dot braille keyboard. Instead of hunting through a QWERTY layout one letter at a time, you tap multiple fingers simultaneously to form braille characters directly on the glass.

To set it up, you tap your right three fingers on the screen at once to position dots 4, 5, and 6, then immediately tap your left three fingers for dots 1, 2, and 3. The phone calibrates to wherever your fingers land naturally, so you don’t need to hit exact spots.

You can use this in two ways. In tabletop mode, you lay the phone flat on a surface and tap the screen face-up. In screen-away mode, you hold the phone with the screen facing outward and curl your fingers around to tap from behind. Screen-away mode is popular for texting on the go because you can hold the phone with one grip and type with the same fingers.

For people who already know braille, this method is significantly faster than swiping through a standard keyboard letter by letter. Each character takes a single multi-finger tap rather than several swipes and a double-tap.

Voice Dictation

Dictation is the simplest option and requires no special training. You tap the microphone button (located via the screen reader) and speak your message. Modern dictation handles auto-punctuation fairly well, but you can also say punctuation aloud. Saying “period,” “comma,” “exclamation point,” or “new line” inserts those characters directly into the text. You can also dictate formatting commands for lists or specific layouts.

The tradeoff is privacy. Dictation works great at home but becomes awkward on a bus or in a quiet office. Many blind texters default to voice input for long messages and switch to braille or keyboard input when they need discretion.

Refreshable Braille Displays

A refreshable braille display is a physical device, roughly the size of a slim keyboard, that connects to a phone over Bluetooth. It has a row of small cells containing tiny pins that raise and lower electronically to form braille characters. As text appears on screen, the pins update in real time so the user can read by touch. Most displays show between 14 and 80 characters at a time, and they include input keys for typing braille back to the phone.

These displays give blind users something the other methods don’t: silent, private reading. With a screen reader, incoming messages are spoken aloud. With a braille display, you can read a text message under a desk or in a meeting the same way a sighted person might glance at their phone. The devices range from pocket-sized 14-cell models designed for phones to full 80-character desktop units, with prices typically running from a few hundred to several thousand dollars.

How Emojis Work

Blind texters send and receive emojis just like anyone else. Screen readers announce each emoji by its official name, so a 😂 is read aloud as “face with tears of joy” and a 👍 as “thumbs up sign.” You browse the emoji keyboard by swiping through categories and listen as each one is described, then double-tap to insert it.

This mostly works well, though some emoji names are less intuitive than others. A black right-facing triangle (►) gets described as “black right-pointing pointer,” which doesn’t convey much if someone used it to mean “play.” The system relies on standardized names from the Unicode Consortium, so the description you hear is consistent across devices even if it doesn’t perfectly match the sender’s intent. Most blind users develop a working vocabulary of common emojis and their spoken names over time.

What Most Blind Texters Actually Use

In practice, most blind smartphone users settle into a personal combination of methods. Braille screen input for quick replies when they’re in public. Voice dictation for longer messages at home. A refreshable braille display at a desk for extended conversations or reading long threads. The standard screen reader keyboard as a fallback when other methods aren’t convenient.

The speed gap between a blind texter and a sighted one is smaller than most people assume. An experienced VoiceOver user typing at 30 words per minute is keeping pace with the average sighted person’s texting speed. Users who are fluent in braille screen input can go even faster, since each letter is a single chord rather than a sequence of swipes. The tools have reached a point where the main limitation isn’t the technology itself but the accessibility of the apps people are typing into.
