Dogs get mange in two fundamentally different ways, depending on the type. Sarcoptic mange spreads through direct contact with infected animals or contaminated environments. Demodectic mange isn’t “caught” at all. It develops when mites already living on a dog’s skin multiply out of control due to a weakened or immature immune system. Understanding which type you’re dealing with changes everything about prevention and treatment.
Two Types of Mange, Two Different Causes
Mange is a skin disease caused by microscopic mites, but the word covers two distinct conditions that work very differently. Sarcoptic mange (also called scabies) is caused by a parasitic mite that burrows into the skin and spreads aggressively between animals. Demodectic mange is caused by a mite that already lives on every dog from birth and only becomes a problem when something goes wrong with the dog’s immune defenses.
Both cause hair loss, skin irritation, and misery for the dog, but they have different causes, different risk factors, and different levels of concern for other pets and people in the household.
How Dogs Catch Sarcoptic Mange
Sarcoptic mange is highly contagious. The primary route is direct physical contact with an infected dog, even brief encounters like nose-to-nose greetings or shared play. The mites can also survive for a short time off the host, which means dogs can pick them up from contaminated environments: kennels, grooming facilities, dog parks, boarding facilities, and multi-dog households are all common transmission sites.
The mites work fast once they land on a new host. Female mites burrow into the outer layer of skin and lay eggs that hatch in three to four days. The larvae go through several stages before becoming adults capable of reproducing, and the whole cycle repeats. A dog can be infested and spreading mites to other animals for up to two months before any visible symptoms appear. That silent period is one reason sarcoptic mange spreads so effectively through places where dogs congregate.
Wildlife also plays a role. Foxes, coyotes, and other wild canids carry the same mite species. Dogs that have contact with wildlife or roam in areas frequented by foxes are at elevated risk.
Can Humans Catch It?
Yes, sarcoptic mange can spread from dogs to people. The mites will burrow into human skin and cause itchy, red bumps, typically on the arms, chest, or waist. The good news is that the canine variant of the mite can’t complete its lifecycle on human skin, so the infestation is self-limiting. It clears up on its own once the dog is treated and is no longer a source of new mites. In the meantime, washing the dog’s bedding and cleaning their living area helps eliminate any mites lingering in the environment.
Why Demodectic Mange Is Different
Every healthy dog carries a small population of Demodex mites on their skin. These mites are a normal part of the skin’s microscopic ecosystem, passed from mother to puppy during nursing in the first days of life. In a dog with a functioning immune system, the mite population stays tiny and causes zero problems.
Demodectic mange develops when something allows those mites to reproduce unchecked. In puppies, it’s almost always an immature immune system that hasn’t yet learned to keep the mites in check. In adult dogs, it signals a weakened immune system, whether from aging, illness, malnutrition, or medications that suppress immune function. The genetic component matters too: a dog’s ability to regulate Demodex populations is partly inherited, which is why certain breeds and family lines are more prone to the condition.
Because the mites are already present on the dog, demodectic mange isn’t considered contagious in the traditional sense. You won’t see it sweep through a kennel the way sarcoptic mange does. A healthy adult dog sharing a home with a dog that has demodectic mange is at very low risk.
Localized vs. Generalized Demodectic Mange
Demodectic mange shows up in two forms, and the distinction matters for understanding how serious the problem is.
Localized demodicosis is the milder version. It typically appears in puppies under six months old as small, patchy areas of hair loss on the face, head, or front legs. The skin may look slightly pink but usually isn’t intensely itchy. Most cases of localized demodicosis in puppies resolve on their own without treatment as the immune system matures.
Generalized demodicosis is more severe. The hair loss spreads across large areas of the body, the skin becomes red and inflamed, and bacterial skin infections often develop in the damaged skin. Affected dogs may have swollen lymph nodes and significant discomfort. This form is more common in dogs with underlying health conditions or inherited immune deficiencies, and it requires veterinary treatment.
Where Dogs Are Most Likely to Pick Up Mange
For sarcoptic mange, the highest-risk environments are anywhere dogs are in close quarters. Shelters and rescue organizations deal with sarcoptic mange regularly because dogs arrive from unknown backgrounds and live in proximity. Boarding kennels, doggy daycares, and grooming facilities are also common transmission points, especially if an infected dog passes through before symptoms become obvious.
Dog parks present a less concentrated but still real risk, particularly if stray or unmonitored dogs frequent the area. Even shared walking trails in areas with fox populations can be a source, since the same species of mite infects both foxes and domestic dogs.
Demodectic mange doesn’t have environmental hotspots in the same way. Since the mites are already on the dog, the “risk factors” are internal: young age, genetic predisposition, immune-suppressing illness, or advanced age.
How Mange Is Diagnosed
Diagnosing mange involves a skin scraping, where a veterinarian uses a scalpel blade to collect a small sample of skin cells and debris from the edge of a visible lesion. The material is examined under a microscope to look for mites, eggs, or mite fragments. For demodectic mange, this test is fairly reliable because the mites live in hair follicles and are usually present in large numbers in affected skin.
Sarcoptic mange is trickier. The mites burrow deep and are often present in very small numbers, which means a skin scraping can come back negative even when the dog is clearly infested. Veterinarians may need to scrape multiple areas, and sometimes the diagnosis is made based on symptoms and response to treatment rather than a confirmed mite sighting. Blood tests that detect antibodies to the sarcoptic mite can help in ambiguous cases.
What Treatment Looks Like
Modern treatment for both types of mange has improved significantly. Oral flea and tick preventatives in the isoxazoline class are now commonly used to treat sarcoptic mange, with studies showing complete elimination of mites within 30 to 60 days of starting treatment. These same medications are also effective against Demodex mites.
For sarcoptic mange, all dogs in the household typically need treatment, even if only one is showing symptoms, because of the high contagion rate. Bedding should be washed and living areas cleaned to remove any mites that have fallen off.
Localized demodectic mange in puppies often clears up without intervention as the puppy’s immune system strengthens. Generalized demodicosis requires consistent treatment over weeks to months, and if a bacterial skin infection has set in, that needs to be addressed alongside the mite overgrowth. In adult dogs with generalized demodicosis, identifying and managing whatever underlying condition weakened the immune system is just as important as killing the mites themselves.
Reducing Your Dog’s Risk
Preventing sarcoptic mange comes down to limiting exposure. Be cautious about environments where unfamiliar dogs mix, and keep your dog away from wildlife, particularly foxes. Many of the monthly flea and tick preventatives that dogs are already on provide some protection against sarcoptic mites, which is a good reason to keep your dog on year-round parasite prevention.
Demodectic mange is harder to “prevent” since the mites are a normal part of your dog’s skin. The best protection is supporting overall immune health through proper nutrition, routine veterinary care, and avoiding unnecessary immune-suppressing medications. If you’re getting a puppy from a breeder, asking whether any dogs in the line have had generalized demodicosis is reasonable, since the immune trait that allows mite overgrowth has a genetic component.
