Dogs get skin infections when something disrupts their skin’s natural defenses, allowing bacteria or yeast that already live on their body to multiply out of control. The most common culprit is a bacterium called Staphylococcus pseudintermedius, which normally lives harmlessly on healthy dog skin but causes infection the moment the skin barrier is weakened. Understanding what breaks down that barrier is the key to understanding why skin infections happen, and why some dogs get them over and over again.
The Skin Barrier and How It Breaks Down
A dog’s skin works like a multilayered wall. The outermost layer is held together by specialized fats (ceramides, cholesterol, and fatty acids) arranged in tight, organized sheets. These fats lock moisture in and keep microbes out. A protein called filaggrin reinforces this barrier from within the skin cells themselves.
When this barrier is intact, the bacteria and yeast living on a dog’s skin stay in balance. When it’s compromised, moisture escapes, the skin dries and cracks, and organisms that were previously harmless gain a foothold. The infection isn’t coming from the outside. It’s an overgrowth of what was already there.
Allergies Are the Most Common Trigger
Environmental allergies (atopic dermatitis) are the single biggest reason dogs develop recurrent skin infections. In dogs with atopic dermatitis, the skin barrier is defective even in areas that look completely normal. The total amount of ceramides is reduced, the organized fat layers are disrupted, and filaggrin production drops during allergic flare-ups. The result is skin that loses water faster than it should and lets allergens penetrate more easily, which triggers more inflammation, which damages the barrier further.
This cycle explains why many dogs with skin infections keep getting them. Treating the infection without addressing the underlying allergy is like mopping a floor while the faucet is still running. Food allergies and flea allergy dermatitis create the same pattern of inflammation, itching, scratching, and barrier damage.
Hormonal and Metabolic Diseases
Hormonal disorders are another major gateway to skin infections. Dogs with Cushing’s disease produce too much cortisol, which directly weakens the immune system and leaves the body vulnerable to infections it would normally fight off easily. The skin thins, heals slowly, and becomes an easy target for bacterial colonization.
Hypothyroidism, where the thyroid gland underproduces hormones, slows the skin’s ability to renew itself and changes the composition of oils on the surface. Dogs with either condition often show up at the vet with skin infections as the first noticeable symptom, before the hormonal problem itself has been diagnosed.
Parasites That Open the Door
Mites are a classic setup for secondary skin infections. Demodex mites burrow into hair follicles and destroy them from the inside, creating deep pockets of damaged tissue where bacteria thrive. Sarcoptes mites (which cause scabies) trigger intense itching that leads to relentless scratching, breaking the skin open. In both cases, the bacterial infection riding on top of the mite infestation often looks worse than the mite problem itself. Fleas work similarly: the biting and scratching create micro-wounds across the skin’s surface.
Skin Folds and Moisture Traps
Anatomy plays a surprisingly large role. When two skin surfaces press together, air circulation drops, heat and moisture build up, and natural secretions like sebum, saliva, and tears get trapped in the fold. This creates the warm, humid environment that surface microbes need to proliferate. Breeds with prominent facial folds (Bulldogs, Pugs, Shar-Peis), lip folds, tail folds, or vulvar folds are especially prone to this type of infection, called intertrigo or skin fold dermatitis.
Swimming, frequent bathing without proper drying, and humid climates can produce similar conditions across broader areas of the body. The spaces between a dog’s toes are particularly vulnerable because moisture lingers there after walks in wet grass or rain.
Breeds at Higher Risk
Some breeds are genetically predisposed to the conditions that cause skin infections. Basset Hounds, Dachshunds, Cocker Spaniels, West Highland White Terriers, Miniature Poodles, German Shepherds, and Cavalier King Charles Spaniels all carry a higher risk of yeast overgrowth on the skin. Labrador Retrievers, English Bulldogs, Akitas, and Chow Chows are more prone to immune-mediated skin diseases that create chronic barrier disruption. If you have one of these breeds and notice recurring skin problems, there’s likely a genetic component at work.
Bacterial vs. Yeast Infections
Bacterial skin infections (pyoderma) and yeast infections often look different and tend to favor different body areas, though they can occur together.
- Bacterial infections typically show up as small red bumps around hair follicles, pus-filled spots, circular patches of hair loss with a flaky ring at the edge (called epidermal collarettes), and crusting. Superficial infections affect the upper layers of skin. Deep infections involve pain, strong odor, swelling, and draining wounds that ooze blood and pus.
- Yeast infections favor warm, oily areas: ear canals, lips, chin, between the toes, and around the anus. The skin often looks greasy, thickened, and dark, with a distinctive musty smell. Yeast overgrowth requires a shift in the skin’s local environment, specifically increased warmth, humidity, or changes in the skin’s oil composition.
Both types share itching as a hallmark symptom. A dog that’s scratching, licking, or chewing at its skin persistently is doing further damage with every pass, which is why infections tend to spread and worsen without intervention.
How Deep Infections Develop
Not all skin infections stay on the surface. When bacteria push past the outer skin layer and into the deeper tissue around hair follicles, the result is furunculosis: painful, swollen lumps that can rupture and form draining tracts. This happens most often between the toes (interdigital furunculosis), on the muzzle, and along the back. Deep infections are harder to resolve, more painful, and more likely to leave scarring. They often develop when a superficial infection goes untreated or when a dog’s immune system is significantly suppressed.
Why Resistance Matters
The bacterium responsible for most canine skin infections, S. pseudintermedius, is increasingly developing resistance to common antibiotics. In a recent study, about 76% of dogs tested carried this bacterium on their skin or in their ears, and roughly 6 to 10% of those strains carried genes for methicillin resistance, making them significantly harder to treat. These resistant strains can also transfer between dogs and their owners: 56% of the humans living with carrier dogs tested positive for the same bacterium.
This is one reason veterinarians now emphasize identifying and treating the underlying cause of skin infections rather than defaulting to repeated courses of antibiotics. Skin cytology, where a vet presses a slide or piece of tape against the skin and examines it under a microscope, helps confirm whether bacteria or yeast are actually present and guides whether antibiotics are truly needed.
What Actually Causes Recurrence
If your dog has had more than two or three skin infections in a year, the infection itself is almost certainly a symptom of something else. The most common underlying causes, in rough order of frequency, are environmental allergies, food allergies, flea allergy, hypothyroidism, Cushing’s disease, and immune deficiencies. Until that root cause is identified and managed, each round of treatment will be temporary. A vet who investigates the “why” behind recurring infections, rather than simply prescribing another course of medication, is the one most likely to break the cycle.
