Dogs get yeast infections in their paws when a fungus that already lives naturally on their skin multiplies out of control. The yeast responsible, called Malassezia, is a normal part of every dog’s skin flora. It only becomes a problem when something disrupts the balance between the yeast and the dog’s immune defenses, tipping conditions in the yeast’s favor. That “something” is almost always a combination of trapped moisture and an underlying health issue.

Why Paws Are Especially Vulnerable

Yeast can overgrow anywhere on a dog’s body, but paws are a hotspot because of their structure. The tight spaces between a dog’s toes create small skin folds with poor airflow, and these folds trap moisture from walking on wet grass, puddles, rain, or even sweat (dogs do sweat through their paw pads). Under normal conditions, a dog’s immune system keeps Malassezia populations low and harmless. The yeast sits in the outermost layer of skin without causing inflammation. But when the skin’s surface environment changes, whether through extra moisture, increased oil production, or damage to the skin barrier, the yeast begins reproducing rapidly.

Once yeast numbers climb, the immune system reacts. Malassezia antigens trigger both antibody responses and cell-mediated immune responses, and in some dogs, they also set off hypersensitivity (allergic) reactions. This creates a vicious cycle: the immune response causes inflammation and itching, the dog licks and chews at the paw, and that licking adds even more moisture and further damages the skin barrier. More moisture and broken skin means more yeast growth, which means more itching, which means more licking. Left unchecked, the cycle intensifies on its own.

The multiplying yeast colonies also produce a sticky, water-repellent protective layer called a biofilm, which shields them from casual cleaning. This is one reason a quick rinse with regular soap often doesn’t resolve the problem once it’s established.

Allergies Are the Most Common Trigger

The single biggest driver of paw yeast infections is allergies. Dogs with atopic dermatitis (environmental allergies to things like pollen, dust mites, or mold) have a defective outer skin layer. When allergens contact their skin, the immune system launches an inflammatory response that damages the skin barrier, increases oil production, and changes the surface conditions in ways that favor yeast. Because paws contact the ground directly, they pick up environmental allergens constantly.

Food sensitivities work through a similar mechanism. Certain ingredients trigger an immune response that shows up as skin irritation, often concentrated in the paws and ears. Dogs who chronically lick or chew their feet after meals may be reacting to something in their diet. Identifying and removing the offending ingredient can sometimes break the cycle of recurring infections entirely.

Hormonal and Immune Conditions

Hypothyroidism is one of the most overlooked causes of recurring yeast infections in dogs. An underactive thyroid reduces the function of immune cells, weakens antibody production, and impairs the skin’s barrier function. In some dogs, recurrent skin and ear yeast infections are the only visible sign of a thyroid problem. Cushing’s disease, which causes the body to overproduce cortisol, has a similar effect: it suppresses the immune system broadly and leaves the skin vulnerable to opportunistic organisms like yeast.

Any condition that compromises a dog’s immune system, whether from medication (like long-term steroids), chronic illness, or age-related decline, can open the door to yeast overgrowth. This is why a dog who suddenly starts getting paw infections in middle age often has something systemic going on that deserves investigation.

What a Paw Yeast Infection Looks Like

The most recognizable signs are persistent paw licking, reddish-brown staining on the fur between the toes, and a distinctive musty or corn-chip-like odor. The skin between the toes may appear red, swollen, or greasy. Some dogs develop thickened, darkened skin in the affected areas over time, especially with chronic or recurring infections. If your dog’s paws smell noticeably different or they can’t seem to stop licking their feet, yeast is a likely culprit.

Veterinarians confirm the diagnosis with a simple skin cytology test, pressing a microscope slide or piece of tape against the affected skin and examining it for yeast cells. The number of organisms found helps determine severity, ranging from occasional cells that require careful scanning to detect, up to massive amounts visible immediately. But the cell count is always interpreted alongside what’s happening clinically, because some dogs with allergic sensitivity react strongly to even moderate yeast numbers.

How Paw Yeast Infections Are Treated

Treatment targets both the yeast overgrowth itself and whatever underlying condition allowed it to happen. For the yeast, topical therapy is the first line for paw infections. Medicated shampoos or soaks containing antifungal ingredients are commonly used one to three times per week, with treatment courses typically running up to six weeks depending on severity. For daily paw maintenance, lower-concentration antiseptic solutions are gentler on the skin barrier than stronger formulations. In more severe or widespread cases, oral antifungal medication may be added.

The more important piece, and the one that determines whether the infection keeps coming back, is addressing the root cause. If allergies are driving the problem, that means allergy management through dietary changes, reducing environmental allergen exposure, or working with a vet on long-term allergy treatment. If a hormonal condition like hypothyroidism is involved, treating the thyroid issue often resolves the skin infections as a downstream effect.

Prevention comes down to controlling moisture and supporting skin health. Drying your dog’s paws thoroughly after walks, especially between the toes, removes the damp conditions yeast needs to thrive. This matters most after rainy walks, swimming, or any time paws stay wet for extended periods. For dogs with heavy fur between their toes, keeping that hair trimmed short improves airflow and reduces moisture retention.

Regular paw checks help you catch early signs before a full infection develops.
