EarPlanes are silicone earplugs with a built-in ceramic filter that slows down how fast air pressure reaches your eardrum during a flight. Instead of blocking sound like regular earplugs, they regulate airflow, giving your ears more time to adjust to the rapid pressure changes that happen during takeoff and landing.
Why Flying Hurts Your Ears
A narrow passage called the eustachian tube connects your middle ear to the back of your throat. Its job is to keep the air pressure on both sides of your eardrum equal. When you’re on the ground, it handles this fine. But when an airplane climbs or descends, cabin pressure changes quickly, and the eustachian tube often can’t keep up.
When pressure builds up faster on one side of the eardrum than the other, the eardrum can’t vibrate normally. That mismatch is what causes the stuffed, painful feeling known as airplane ear (barotrauma). Swallowing or yawning can help because both actions open the eustachian tube briefly, letting air pass through to equalize pressure. But for many people, especially those with narrow eustachian tubes, congestion, or allergies, swallowing and yawning aren’t enough during a steep descent.
The Ceramic Filter Inside
The core of an EarPlane is a small disc made of porous ceramic called CeramX. This filter has microscopic pores that act as a bottleneck for air. When you insert the earplug, it creates a sealed chamber between the plug and your eardrum. One side of the ceramic filter faces the airplane cabin; the other side faces that sealed chamber next to your ear.
As cabin pressure rises or drops, a pressure difference develops across the filter. Air still flows through, but the ceramic slows that flow considerably. Think of it like a screen door versus an open doorway: air gets through, just not all at once. By throttling the rate of pressure change reaching your eardrum, the plug gives your eustachian tube extra time to do its job. Instead of a sudden pressure spike your ear can’t handle, you get a gradual shift it can manage.
This is different from how regular foam or silicone earplugs work. Standard earplugs try to seal the ear canal completely, which can actually make pressure problems worse by trapping air at the old pressure level. EarPlanes deliberately let air through in a controlled way.
When and How to Use Them
EarPlanes are most useful during the two phases of flight where cabin pressure changes the fastest: takeoff (climb) and descent (landing). Most users insert them before the plane begins its ascent and keep them in until the aircraft has leveled off at cruising altitude. During the cruise portion of the flight, cabin pressure stays relatively stable, so the plugs aren’t doing much. You’d then put them back in before the descent begins, which is typically the phase that causes the most discomfort because cabin pressure increases as the plane drops altitude.
If you’re unsure when descent starts, a good rule of thumb is to insert them about 30 to 45 minutes before your scheduled landing time. On shorter flights, some people simply leave them in for the entire trip rather than fiddling with removal and reinsertion.
Fit matters. The silicone flanges need to form a seal in your ear canal for the ceramic filter to work properly. If the plug sits loosely, air bypasses the filter entirely and you lose the pressure-regulating effect. EarPlanes come in adult and children’s sizes for this reason.
How Long They Last
EarPlanes are reusable, but not indefinitely. The manufacturer recommends replacing them after four to six flights. Over time, the micron-sized pores in the ceramic filter collect dust and tiny airborne particles, gradually clogging the passageways that regulate airflow. Once enough pores are blocked, the filter can’t manage pressure changes effectively, and the plugs become little more than standard earplugs. There’s no way to clean or restore the ceramic element, so replacement is the only option once performance drops off.
What EarPlanes Don’t Do
EarPlanes reduce ear pain from pressure changes, but they aren’t noise-cancelling devices. They lower ambient sound somewhat, the way any earplug would, but they won’t meaningfully cut engine drone on a long flight. If cabin noise is your main concern, active noise-cancelling headphones are more effective at improving perceived comfort. Studies comparing the two found that noise-cancelling headphones produced significantly higher comfort ratings than earplugs in turboprop aircraft environments, though both options reduced discomfort compared to wearing nothing.
EarPlanes also can’t fix a severe blockage. If your eustachian tubes are swollen shut from a sinus infection or bad cold, slowing the rate of pressure change may not be enough because no air is getting through to equalize at all. In those situations, a decongestant nasal spray used before the flight is typically more helpful, since it targets the swelling that’s actually causing the problem.
Who Benefits Most
People who consistently get ear pain on flights despite swallowing, chewing gum, or using the Valsalva maneuver (pinching your nose and gently blowing) tend to get the most relief from EarPlanes. Frequent flyers with mild eustachian tube dysfunction, children who can’t effectively equalize on their own, and anyone flying with mild congestion are common users. They’re inexpensive, drug-free, and require no special technique beyond inserting them snugly before pressure changes begin.
