How Do Guinea Pigs Get Pneumonia: Causes and Signs

Guinea pigs get pneumonia primarily through bacterial infections that spread via direct contact with sick animals, airborne droplets, or contaminated objects like shared water bottles and bedding. Two bacteria are responsible for the vast majority of cases: Bordetella bronchiseptica and Streptococcus pneumoniae. Guinea pigs are unusually susceptible to respiratory infections compared to other small pets, and what starts as a mild upper respiratory issue can progress to life-threatening pneumonia within days.

The Bacteria Behind Most Cases

Bordetella bronchiseptica is the more common culprit. This bacterium has a broad host range, meaning it infects many species of mammals including dogs, rabbits, pigs, and rats. In guinea pigs, it targets the respiratory tract and can cause anything from mild nasal congestion to severe, fatal pneumonia. What makes Bordetella especially dangerous is that other animals can carry it without showing any symptoms at all, silently passing it to your guinea pig.

Streptococcus pneumoniae is the other major cause. This is the same type of bacterium that causes pneumonia in humans. Guinea pigs can pick it up from people who are carrying the bacteria, even if those people feel perfectly healthy. When Streptococcus takes hold in a guinea pig, it tends to spread beyond the lungs. It can cause ear infections (leading to a noticeable head tilt), infections of the reproductive organs, and sepsis.

Both bacteria can also work together. A guinea pig already weakened by one infection becomes far more vulnerable to the other, and dual infections are particularly difficult to treat.

How the Infection Spreads

There are three main routes of transmission. The first is direct contact: nose-to-nose interaction with an infected animal, sharing a cage, or grooming. The second is aerosolization, where tiny respiratory droplets carrying bacteria travel through the air when an infected animal sneezes or coughs. The third is through fomites, which is a clinical term for contaminated objects. Water bottles, food bowls, hay racks, fleece liners, and even your hands after handling a sick animal can all carry bacteria to a healthy guinea pig.

The fomite route catches many owners off guard. You can inadvertently transfer bacteria between guinea pigs housed in separate cages simply by handling them one after the other without washing your hands.

The Rabbit and Dog Risk

One of the most important things guinea pig owners need to know is the cross-species risk from rabbits and dogs. Rabbits frequently carry Bordetella bronchiseptica without ever looking sick. Research published in The Journal of Veterinary Medical Science traced one guinea pig colony outbreak back to rabbits as the initial hosts, with the bacteria then expanding into the guinea pig population. Dogs also commonly carry Bordetella (it’s one of the bacteria behind “kennel cough”). Housing guinea pigs near rabbits, or in a home with dogs that have recently been boarded or exposed to other dogs, raises the infection risk considerably. This is one reason veterinarians generally advise against keeping guinea pigs and rabbits together.

Environmental Factors That Raise the Risk

Bacteria alone don’t always cause pneumonia. Many guinea pigs carry low levels of respiratory bacteria without getting sick. The environment tips the balance. Several conditions stress a guinea pig’s respiratory system enough to let an infection take hold.

Temperature is a major factor. The USDA recommends keeping guinea pigs in environments between 60 and 85°F, and notes that temperatures outside this range need to be addressed immediately. Cold drafts are particularly dangerous. Placing a cage near an exterior door, a drafty window, or an air conditioning vent can chill a guinea pig enough to suppress its immune defenses. On the other end, temperatures above 85°F cause heat stress, which also compromises immunity.

Ammonia buildup from urine-soaked bedding is another significant trigger. When bedding isn’t changed frequently enough, ammonia fumes irritate and damage the delicate lining of the respiratory tract, making it much easier for bacteria to establish an infection. If you can smell ammonia when you lean near the cage, levels are already high enough to cause harm. Poor ventilation compounds this problem, which is why glass aquariums or enclosed plastic bins make poor guinea pig housing compared to open-topped cages with good airflow.

High humidity, overcrowding, and the stress of a new environment (like being recently adopted or moved) also weaken a guinea pig’s ability to fight off respiratory bacteria.

Signs of Pneumonia in Guinea Pigs

Guinea pigs are prey animals, which means they instinctively hide signs of illness until they’re quite sick. By the time you notice obvious symptoms, the infection may already be advanced. Early signs are subtle: a guinea pig that’s slightly less active than usual, eating a bit less, or sitting hunched with its fur puffed up.

As pneumonia progresses, the signs become clearer:

  • Labored breathing: You might see the sides of the body moving visibly with each breath, or hear clicking, wheezing, or crackling sounds.
  • Nasal or eye discharge: Crusty or wet buildup around the nose or eyes, often white or yellowish.
  • Sneezing: Occasional sneezing is normal, but frequent or productive sneezing (with visible discharge) is not.
  • Weight loss and appetite changes: A guinea pig that stops eating hay or pellets, or loses weight over a few days, is in trouble.
  • Head tilt: If Streptococcus spreads to the inner ear, it causes a persistent head tilt (called torticollis) and sometimes loss of balance.
  • Lethargy: Sitting still in one spot, not responding to treats or interaction, reluctance to move.

Pneumonia in guinea pigs can become fatal within 48 to 72 hours of noticeable symptoms. Any sign of respiratory distress warrants an urgent vet visit, not a “wait and see” approach.

How Vets Diagnose It

A vet experienced with exotic pets will typically start by listening to the guinea pig’s lungs with a stethoscope, checking for crackling or reduced breath sounds on one or both sides. Chest X-rays can reveal fluid or inflammation in the lungs. In some cases, the vet will take samples from nasal discharge or the throat to culture the specific bacteria involved, which helps determine which treatment will be most effective. This matters because different bacteria respond to different medications, and guinea pigs are sensitive to certain types of antibiotics that are safe for other animals.

Keeping Your Guinea Pig Safe

Prevention comes down to controlling the three factors that cause pneumonia: exposure to bacteria, environmental stress, and immune health.

Quarantine any new guinea pig in a separate room (not just a separate cage in the same room, since airborne transmission is possible) for at least two to three weeks before introducing it to your existing herd. Watch for any signs of sneezing, discharge, or lethargy during this period. Keep guinea pigs away from rabbits and limit their exposure to dogs, especially dogs that have recently been around other dogs.

Clean the cage thoroughly at least once a week, with spot-cleaning of soiled bedding every day or two. Use a cage design with adequate ventilation. Keep the cage away from drafts, direct sunlight, and heating or cooling vents, maintaining a steady temperature between 65 and 75°F for ideal comfort. Wash your hands between handling different guinea pigs, and between handling other pets and your guinea pigs.

A diet rich in vitamin C also plays a protective role. Guinea pigs, like humans, cannot produce their own vitamin C, and deficiency weakens the immune system significantly. Fresh bell peppers, leafy greens, and a quality pellet formulated for guinea pigs help maintain adequate levels. A guinea pig with good nutrition, clean housing, stable temperatures, and minimal stress exposure has the strongest possible defense against respiratory infection.
