Manage Evening Light Exposure

Blue light from screens and bright overhead lighting suppresses melatonin, the hormone that signals your brain it’s time to sleep. Research has shown that evening exposure to blue-enriched light (the kind emitted by phones, tablets, and LED bulbs) can delay the onset of REM sleep, particularly by lengthening the time it takes to reach your first REM cycle. While the effect on overall sleep architecture is modest in younger adults, it appears more pronounced in older adults.

The practical move is to dim your lights and put away screens in the hour or two before bed. If that’s not realistic, using a blue-light filter or switching to warm-toned lighting (around 3000K or lower) in the evening can help reduce the impact. The goal is to let your melatonin rise naturally as bedtime approaches so your sleep cycles unfold on schedule.
