You can confirm ovulation through a combination of body signals: a sustained rise in your resting temperature, a shift in cervical mucus from slippery to dry, and in some cases, a brief pain on one side of your lower abdomen. No single sign is definitive on its own, but tracking two or three together gives you a reliable picture. Some methods tell you ovulation is approaching, while others confirm it only after the fact.
Basal Body Temperature Confirms It After the Fact
Your basal body temperature (BBT) is your resting temperature first thing in the morning, before you get out of bed or do anything. After ovulation, it rises by 0.4 to 1.0°F (0.22 to 0.56°C) and stays elevated for the rest of your cycle. The increase is small enough that you need a thermometer that reads to at least one decimal place, ideally a dedicated BBT thermometer.
The key rule: when you see higher temperatures for at least three consecutive days, you can assume ovulation has occurred. This is sometimes called the “three over six” rule, where three recent temperatures are higher than the previous six. The catch is that BBT only tells you ovulation already happened. It can’t warn you in advance. That makes it most useful for understanding your cycle patterns over several months, or for confirming that other signs (like mucus changes) were accurate.
Illness, poor sleep, alcohol, and even getting up to use the bathroom can throw off a single reading, so consistency matters. Take your temperature at the same time each morning, ideally after at least three hours of uninterrupted sleep.
Cervical Mucus Changes Before and After
Cervical mucus is one of the most practical signs to track because it changes both before and after ovulation. In the days leading up to ovulation, rising estrogen levels make the mucus thin, clear, slippery, and stretchy, similar to raw egg whites. This texture exists for a reason: sperm can swim through it easily. Thick, dry, or sticky mucus acts like a barrier, making it nearly impossible for sperm to reach an egg.
After ovulation, the mucus typically dries up or becomes thick and white again. So if you notice a clear shift from wet and slippery to dry or sticky, that transition is a strong signal that ovulation has passed. If you never notice egg-white mucus during your cycle, that could be a sign you’re not ovulating, though some people simply produce less noticeable mucus.
Ovulation Pain Happens for Some People
A dull ache or sharp twinge on one side of your lower abdomen around mid-cycle is called mittelschmerz. It occurs on the side of the ovary releasing the egg, and it typically lasts a few minutes to a few hours, though it can occasionally persist for a day or two. The sensation ranges from a mild cramp to a sudden, sharp pain, sometimes with light spotting.
Not everyone feels it, and its absence doesn’t mean you didn’t ovulate. But if you consistently notice one-sided pelvic discomfort around the same point in your cycle, it’s a useful data point to pair with other signs.
LH Tests Predict Ovulation, Not Confirm It
Over-the-counter ovulation predictor kits (OPKs) detect a surge of luteinizing hormone in your urine. This surge triggers ovulation roughly 36 to 40 hours later in the bloodstream. Since the hormone takes time to build up in urine, a positive result on a home test typically means ovulation will happen within the next 12 to 24 hours.
A positive OPK tells you ovulation is likely imminent. It does not confirm that the egg was actually released. In most cycles, the surge does lead to ovulation, but there are important exceptions. People with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) often have baseline LH levels that are five to six times higher than average, which can trigger a positive reading even when ovulation isn’t happening. If you have PCOS or irregular cycles, a positive OPK is less reliable on its own.
A Blood Test Can Give You a Definitive Answer
Progesterone is a hormone that rises sharply after ovulation because the structure left behind on the ovary (after the egg is released) starts producing it. A blood draw around day 21 of a 28-day cycle can measure this directly. Levels above 10 ng/mL generally confirm that ovulation occurred normally. Levels below that threshold suggest either no ovulation happened, the timing of the blood draw was off, or progesterone production was insufficient.
This is the most definitive way to confirm ovulation, but it requires a visit to a healthcare provider and correct timing. If your cycles are longer or shorter than 28 days, the ideal testing day shifts accordingly, typically about seven days before your expected period.
Cervical Position Offers Subtle Clues
Your cervix changes position and texture throughout your cycle. Around ovulation, rising estrogen causes the cervix to move higher, feel softer (similar to the texture of your lips rather than the tip of your nose), and open slightly. After ovulation, it drops lower, firms up, and closes.
These changes are real but subtle, and it takes several cycles of daily checking to learn what your own baseline feels like. Most people find cervical position useful as a supporting sign alongside temperature and mucus, not as a standalone indicator.
What Wearable Trackers Can and Can’t Do
Wearable devices that monitor skin temperature and heart rate overnight can predict your fertile window with reasonable accuracy. For people with regular cycles, recent research found prediction accuracy around 85%, with the algorithm correctly identifying about 70% of actual fertile days. For irregular cycles, accuracy drops to about 80%, and the device catches only around 43% of fertile days.
These devices are best at spotting patterns over time rather than pinpointing a single day. They automate what BBT tracking does manually, with the added convenience of continuous monitoring. But they share the same fundamental limitation: temperature-based methods confirm ovulation retroactively rather than predicting it in advance.
Saliva Ferning Tests Are Unreliable
Some products claim to detect ovulation by examining dried saliva under a small microscope. When estrogen is high (near ovulation), saliva can form a fern-like crystal pattern on a glass slide. In practice, the FDA notes significant limitations: not all women produce visible ferning, the pattern doesn’t appear on every fertile day, and results are easily disrupted by eating, drinking, smoking, or even how you apply the saliva. Some men also produce ferning patterns. These tests are not considered reliable for confirming or predicting ovulation.
Signs You May Not Be Ovulating
You can have regular bleeding without actually ovulating. The medical term is anovulation, and the bleeding that occurs isn’t true menstruation (which by definition follows the release of an egg) but rather breakthrough bleeding from hormonal fluctuations. Several signs suggest this might be happening:
- Irregular cycle length: If the time between your periods varies significantly from month to month, ovulation may not be occurring consistently.
- Very light periods: Blood loss of fewer than 4 teaspoons (20 mL) throughout a period can be a sign of anovulatory cycles.
- Missing periods: Skipping periods when you’re not pregnant is one of the clearest indicators.
- No egg-white mucus: If you never notice the clear, stretchy discharge during your cycle, ovulation may not be happening.
- No temperature shift: A flat BBT chart with no sustained rise suggests the egg was never released.
Occasional anovulatory cycles are normal, especially during adolescence, after childbirth, and approaching menopause. Persistent anovulation across multiple cycles is worth investigating, particularly if you’re trying to conceive.
Combining Methods for the Clearest Picture
No single sign is perfectly reliable. The most confident confirmation comes from layering two or three methods together. A practical approach: track cervical mucus daily (it’s free and gives advance warning), use an OPK for a few days when mucus becomes slippery, and take your BBT each morning to confirm ovulation after the fact. When all three align, you have a high degree of certainty. If you want laboratory-level confirmation, a timed progesterone blood test provides the most objective answer.
