You can tell you’re ovulating by tracking a combination of body signals: changes in cervical mucus, a slight rise in resting body temperature, and for some people, a distinctive one-sided pelvic pain. No single sign is perfectly reliable on its own, but together they paint a clear picture. Home ovulation test kits, which detect a hormone surge in your urine, offer the most straightforward confirmation without a doctor’s visit.
Cervical Mucus Changes
The most accessible day-to-day sign of ovulation is a shift in your cervical mucus. In the days leading up to ovulation, your body produces mucus that looks and feels like raw egg white: transparent, stretchy, slippery, and wet. This is your most fertile type of mucus, and its job is to help sperm travel through the cervix. You can check by wiping with toilet paper before urinating or by gently collecting a sample with clean fingers. If you can stretch it between your thumb and index finger without it breaking, you’re likely in or very close to your fertile window.
Earlier in your cycle, mucus tends to be thicker, white or cloudy, and sticky. Some days you may notice almost none at all. The progression from dry or sticky to wet and stretchy is the pattern to watch for. After ovulation, mucus typically dries up again or returns to a thicker consistency within a day or two.
Ovulation Test Kits
Over-the-counter ovulation predictor kits (OPKs) detect a surge in luteinizing hormone (LH) in your urine. If your cycle is 28 days, that means beginning around day 10 or 11. If your cycles are irregular, you may need to test over a wider window, which can use more strips.
Basal Body Temperature Tracking
Your resting body temperature shifts slightly after ovulation, typically rising by less than half a degree Fahrenheit (about 0.3°C). The catch is that this rise happens after the egg has already been released, so it confirms ovulation in hindsight rather than predicting it in advance. Over several months, though, the pattern helps you anticipate when ovulation will happen in future cycles.
To track accurately, take your temperature first thing in the morning before you get out of bed, talk, or drink anything. Use a basal body thermometer, which reads to two decimal places. Record the number daily. You’re looking for a sustained shift: three or more days of temperatures higher than the previous six. Why the “Day 14” Rule Is Misleading
The textbook 28-day cycle places ovulation neatly on day 14, but real cycles vary widely. The first half of the cycle, before ovulation, is the phase that fluctuates most. A study of healthy menstrual cycles found this phase averaged 16.5 days with a wide range: 95% of cycles fell between 10 and 22 days. That means even if your cycle length is consistent, the exact day you ovulate can shift by nearly two weeks from person to person, and by several days from month to month in the same person.
Your fertile window also extends beyond ovulation day itself. Sperm can survive in the reproductive tract for 3 to 5 days, while the egg lives only about 12 to 24 hours after release. This means the days leading up to ovulation are actually your most fertile. Having sex in the two to three days before ovulation gives sperm time to be in position when the egg arrives.
Fertility Apps and Devices
Fertility tracking apps use your inputted data (period dates, basal temperatures, sometimes LH test results) to estimate your fertile window. Their accuracy depends entirely on the quality of the data you enter. One app, Natural Cycles, has FDA clearance as a contraceptive device and reports 93% effectiveness with typical use and 98% with perfect use. Most other apps are prediction tools, not medical devices, and their algorithms are less rigorously tested.
Wearable devices that continuously monitor skin temperature overnight can simplify basal temperature tracking by removing the need to take your temperature manually each morning. These can reduce user error but still rely on algorithms that work best with regular cycles. If your cycles are irregular or you have a condition like PCOS, app predictions become significantly less reliable.
How a Doctor Can Confirm Ovulation
If you want definitive proof, a blood test measuring progesterone is the gold standard. Progesterone rises after ovulation, and levels in the luteal phase (the second half of your cycle) typically range from 2 to 25 ng/mL. Your doctor will time the blood draw for about a week after your expected ovulation date. A low result suggests you may not have ovulated that cycle.
Ultrasound is another option. A series of scans across several days can track a follicle growing on the ovary and confirm when it ruptures to release an egg. This is more commonly used during fertility treatment than for routine tracking.
Signs You May Not Be Ovulating
Having a period does not guarantee ovulation occurred. You can bleed on a roughly monthly schedule without ever releasing an egg, a pattern called anovulatory bleeding. The most common red flag is irregular periods, where the length of your cycle varies unpredictably from month to month, or you frequently skip periods altogether.
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) accounts for about 70% of anovulation cases. It causes the body to produce excess androgens, which prevent follicles in the ovaries from maturing enough to release an egg. Other causes include very low body weight, prolonged intense exercise (which can suppress the hormones that trigger ovulation), obesity, thyroid disorders, and primary ovarian insufficiency.
If you’ve been tracking for several months and never see a temperature shift, consistently get negative OPK results, or notice your mucus pattern never progresses to the clear, stretchy stage, those are signals worth discussing with a healthcare provider. The same applies if your cycles are shorter than 21 days, longer than 35 days, or highly unpredictable in length.
