How Do I Know If I’m Ovulating? Signs to Track

Your body gives several signals before, during, and after ovulation, and learning to read them can tell you exactly where you are in your cycle. The most reliable signs include changes in cervical mucus, a small rise in body temperature after the egg is released, and the results of at-home ovulation predictor kits, which are 92% to 97% accurate when compared to blood tests. Some signs tell you ovulation is approaching, while others confirm it already happened.

Cervical Mucus Changes

The single most accessible clue is your cervical mucus. Throughout your cycle, the fluid your cervix produces changes in texture and appearance in a predictable pattern, driven by rising estrogen levels as ovulation approaches.

In the days right after your period, you may notice very little discharge. As your cycle progresses, the mucus becomes thicker and white or creamy. Then, in the three or four days surrounding ovulation (roughly days 10 to 14 of a 28-day cycle), the mucus becomes slippery, stretchy, and clear. The most common description is that it looks and feels like raw egg whites. This is your most fertile mucus because sperm can swim through it far more easily than through thicker discharge. After ovulation, the mucus dries up or becomes sticky again.

To check, you can look at the discharge on your underwear or on toilet paper after wiping. If you can stretch it between two fingers and it holds without breaking, you’re likely in or very near your fertile window.

Basal Body Temperature

Your resting body temperature shifts slightly after ovulation. The increase is small, typically less than half a degree Fahrenheit (0.3°C), but it’s measurable with a basal body thermometer, which reads to two decimal places. You take your temperature first thing in the morning before getting out of bed, talking, or drinking anything, then log it daily.

The catch is that this method only confirms ovulation after it has already happened. You’ll see a sustained temperature rise that stays elevated for the rest of your cycle. Over several months of tracking, though, the pattern can help you predict when ovulation is likely to occur in future cycles. It won’t give you a heads-up in the current cycle the way mucus changes do.

Ovulation Predictor Kits

Over-the-counter ovulation predictor kits (OPKs) detect a hormone called luteinizing hormone, or LH, in your urine. Your body releases a surge of LH right before ovulation. Once blood levels of LH rise, ovulation typically follows 36 to 40 hours later. Because it takes time for LH to build up in urine, a positive result on a home test means ovulation is likely within the next 12 to 24 hours.

A 2024 study comparing five popular brands found that surge detection accuracy ranged from about 92% to 97% when measured against blood LH levels. Budget-friendly strip tests performed just as well as, and in some cases better than, pricier digital versions. Sensitivity (the ability to catch every surge) varied more between brands, with some strips catching the surge about 75% of the time and others closer to 40%. Using tests from the same brand consistently and testing at the same time each day improves your results.

Ovulation Pain

Some people feel a twinge or dull ache on one side of the lower abdomen around the time an egg is released. This is sometimes called mittelschmerz, and it can last anywhere from a few minutes to a day or two. Not everyone experiences it, and those who do may only feel it in some cycles. By itself it’s not a reliable way to pinpoint ovulation, but paired with other signs like mucus changes or a positive OPK, it can help confirm your timing.

Cervical Position

Your cervix also shifts position during your cycle. Around ovulation, it moves higher in the vagina, feels softer to the touch, and opens slightly. After ovulation, it drops lower and becomes firmer. Checking cervical position takes practice and is best done over several cycles so you learn what the differences feel like for your body. Wash your hands, insert a finger, and note whether the cervix feels high or low, firm or soft. Many people use this alongside mucus tracking rather than on its own.

The Fertile Window and Egg Lifespan

A released egg survives for less than 24 hours. That’s a narrow window on its own, but because sperm can live inside the reproductive tract for up to five days, your actual fertile window is wider, roughly the five days before ovulation plus the day of ovulation itself. This is why methods that predict ovulation in advance (mucus tracking and OPKs) are more useful for timing purposes than methods that confirm ovulation after the fact (temperature tracking).

Combining two or more tracking methods gives you the clearest picture. Mucus changes and OPKs alert you that ovulation is approaching, then a sustained temperature rise confirms the egg has been released.

Saliva Ferning Tests

Another at-home option is a saliva-based ovulation test. Rising estrogen near ovulation can cause dried saliva to form a fern-shaped crystal pattern when viewed under a small microscope. The FDA notes several limitations with these tests: not all people produce visible ferning, the pattern doesn’t always appear on every fertile day, and results can be thrown off by eating, drinking, brushing your teeth, or smoking before the test. Some men also produce ferning patterns. These kits are generally considered less reliable than urine-based OPKs and shouldn’t be used as a method of contraception.

Signs You May Not Be Ovulating

Having a monthly period doesn’t guarantee that ovulation occurred. It’s possible to bleed on a regular or semi-regular schedule without releasing an egg. Signs that may point to cycles without ovulation include periods that are very irregular in timing (the length between them keeps changing significantly), periods that are unusually heavy (more than about 80 mL of blood loss, or lasting longer than seven days), or periods that are very light (less than about 20 mL total).

If you’re tracking your temperature and never see a sustained rise, or if OPKs never show a positive result over several months, those are also clues. A blood test measuring progesterone about a week after expected ovulation is the most definitive way to confirm whether ovulation happened. Normal post-ovulation progesterone levels range from 2 to 25 ng/mL, and levels at the lower end of that range or below suggest the egg was never released.

Putting It All Together

No single sign is perfectly reliable on its own. The strongest approach is stacking two or three methods. Start with cervical mucus tracking because it’s free and gives advance notice. Add OPK strips if you want clearer confirmation of the LH surge. Log your basal temperature each morning if you want to verify that ovulation actually occurred. Over two to three cycles, you’ll start to see your personal pattern, and the signals will become much easier to read.
