Most home sleep test devices use a simple system of colored lights to tell you whether they’re recording properly. Green lights mean sensors are connected and getting a good signal. Red or yellow flashing lights mean something needs attention. The specifics vary by device, but checking those indicator lights before you fall asleep is the single most important thing you can do to avoid a wasted night and a repeat test.

What the Lights on Your Device Mean

Home sleep test devices communicate almost entirely through small LED lights or icons next to each sensor connection. The color coding is consistent across most major brands: green means good, and anything else means something is wrong.

On the Philips Alice NightOne, each sensor has its own icon on the top of the device. A solid green icon means the device is getting a good signal from that sensor. A flashing yellow icon means the sensor either isn’t connected or isn’t positioned well enough to get a usable reading. If you see flashing yellow, remove and reapply the sensor or adjust its placement until the icon turns solid green. Keep your hands warm before bed, and if your hands tend to run cold, try warming them under water or wearing light gloves until you’re ready to attach the sensor.

What to Check in the Morning

If it’s red, the device didn’t gather enough data, and you’ll likely need to repeat the test the following night with fresh batteries. A valid home sleep study requires a minimum of four hours of good quality airflow and oxygen data recorded during your normal sleep period.
