If you place it between two fingers, it will stretch without breaking. This “egg white” mucus makes it easier for sperm to travel through the cervix and into the uterus. These biometric inputs directly relate to the hormonal changes driving ovulation, so predictions based on them are grounded in what your body is actually doing rather than a statistical guess. If you use an app, the more real data you feed it, the more useful it becomes.

Tracking Ovulation With Irregular Cycles

If your cycles are unpredictable, pinpointing ovulation gets harder but not impossible. Conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) can cause irregular or absent ovulation, and they also create some specific tracking challenges. People with PCOS often have elevated baseline LH levels, which means ovulation predictor kits may show misleading positive results even when ovulation isn’t occurring.

For irregular cycles, cervical mucus and basal body temperature are often more reliable daily indicators than calendar calculations or LH strips alone. The egg-white mucus change still signals rising estrogen, and a sustained temperature shift still confirms that ovulation took place. Tracking all of these signs together over several months builds a clearer picture of your personal pattern, even when that pattern is inconsistent.

After three or four months of consistent tracking, most people develop a reliable sense of when ovulation is approaching, which days are most fertile, and what their body’s particular signals look and feel like.
