Your body gives several reliable signals before and during ovulation, and learning to read them can help you identify your most fertile days each cycle. The most practical signs include changes in cervical mucus, a slight rise in resting body temperature, and predictable timing relative to your next period. Some people notice physical sensations like mild pelvic pain, while others have no obvious symptoms at all.

Cervical Mucus Is the Strongest Daily Signal

The fluid your cervix produces changes in texture throughout your cycle, and these shifts are the single most useful day-to-day clue that ovulation is approaching. After your period ends, you may notice very little discharge, or it may feel dry and sticky, like paste. As your body prepares to release an egg, the mucus becomes creamy, smooth, and white, similar to yogurt in consistency.

Right before ovulation, the mucus changes dramatically. It becomes clear, slippery, and stretchy, closely resembling raw egg whites. If you pinch it between two fingers, it stretches into a strand without breaking. This is your most fertile cervical mucus, and its job is to help sperm travel through the cervix and survive long enough to reach an egg. Sperm can live in this type of fluid for up to five days, which is why the fertile window starts several days before the egg is actually released.

After ovulation, the mucus typically dries up again or becomes thick and pasty. Tracking these changes over two or three cycles gives you a surprisingly clear pattern. You can check by wiping with toilet paper before urinating or by observing what appears on your underwear throughout the day. The absence of egg-white mucus around the expected time of ovulation can be a sign that ovulation didn’t occur that cycle.

Basal Body Temperature Confirms Ovulation After the Fact

Your basal body temperature (BBT) is your body’s resting temperature, taken first thing in the morning before you get out of bed, talk, or even sit up. Before ovulation, BBT tends to hover in a lower range. After the egg is released, the hormone progesterone causes a small but measurable increase, typically less than half a degree Fahrenheit. The rise can be as small as 0.4°F or as large as 1°F, depending on the person.

The catch is that the temperature shift happens after ovulation, not before. So BBT alone won’t warn you that ovulation is about to happen on a given day. Its real value is in confirming that ovulation did occur and in revealing your personal pattern over several months. Once you have a few cycles of data, you can start to predict when the shift will happen in future cycles. Use a thermometer that reads to at least one decimal place, and take your temperature at roughly the same time each morning. Illness, poor sleep, and alcohol can all throw off the reading.

Ovulation Predictor Kits Detect the Hormone Surge

Ovulation is triggered by a sharp rise in luteinizing hormone (LH). Blood levels of LH spike roughly 36 to 40 hours before the follicle on your ovary ruptures and releases an egg. Over-the-counter ovulation predictor kits (OPKs) work by detecting this surge in your urine, giving you a positive result one to two days before ovulation actually happens. That makes them more useful for timing purposes than temperature tracking, which only tells you what already happened.

To use them effectively, start testing a few days before you expect to ovulate. For a 28-day cycle, that means starting around day 10 or 11. Test in the afternoon or early evening, since LH often surges later in the day. A positive result means ovulation is likely within the next day or two, placing you squarely in the fertile window.

Physical Symptoms Some People Notice

Some people feel a twinge or dull ache on one side of the lower abdomen around the time of ovulation. This is called mittelschmerz, and it typically lasts a few minutes to a few hours, though it can occasionally persist for a day or two. It tends to alternate sides from cycle to cycle, corresponding to whichever ovary releases the egg. Not everyone experiences this, so its absence doesn’t mean you aren’t ovulating.

Other secondary signs can include mild breast tenderness, a subtle increase in sex drive, light spotting, or bloating. Your cervix itself also changes: around ovulation it shifts higher, feels softer, and opens slightly. These signs are subtle and take practice to notice, but combined with mucus tracking, they round out the picture.

Timing Your Fertile Window

Ovulation typically happens about 14 days before the start of your next period, not 14 days after your last one. That distinction matters if your cycles are longer or shorter than 28 days. Someone with a 32-day cycle, for example, would likely ovulate around day 18, not day 14.

Your fertile window spans roughly six days: the five days sperm can survive inside the reproductive tract, plus the day of ovulation itself. The egg, once released, is only viable for about 12 to 24 hours. That’s why the days leading up to ovulation are actually more important for conception than the day of ovulation itself. If you’re tracking mucus and using OPKs together, you can identify this window with reasonable confidence.

Signs You May Not Be Ovulating

Having a period doesn’t necessarily mean you ovulated. Anovulatory cycles, where menstruation happens without an egg being released, are more common than most people realize. Clues that ovulation may not have occurred include:

  • Irregular periods: The length between your periods varies significantly from month to month.
  • Very heavy or very light bleeding: Losing more than about 80 mL of blood per period (soaking through a pad or tampon every hour or two), or barely bleeding at all.
  • Missing periods entirely: Skipping one or more cycles without being pregnant.
  • No egg-white cervical mucus: If you never notice the clear, stretchy discharge around the middle of your cycle, ovulation may not be happening.
  • No temperature shift: A flat BBT chart with no sustained rise in the second half of the cycle suggests progesterone never increased, meaning an egg likely wasn’t released.

Conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), thyroid disorders, high stress, significant weight changes, and excessive exercise can all disrupt ovulation. A progesterone blood test, drawn about a week after suspected ovulation, is the most definitive way to confirm whether you actually ovulated. Normal luteal-phase progesterone falls between 2 and 25 ng/mL, with higher values indicating a stronger ovulatory response.

Combining Methods for Accuracy

No single tracking method is perfect on its own. Cervical mucus gives you a real-time heads-up that ovulation is approaching. OPKs narrow the timing to a one-to-two-day window. BBT confirms it happened. Using all three together, sometimes called the symptothermal method, gives you the most complete and reliable picture of your cycle. Apps can help you log and visualize this data, but the app’s predictions are only as good as the information you feed it. Generic calendar-based predictions without personal tracking data are often several days off, especially if your cycles aren’t perfectly regular.
