It’s easier to remember under pressure, which is why it’s popular among military and first responders. Either method works. Pick whichever feels more natural and practice it before you actually need it, so the pattern becomes automatic.

How Stress Keeps Your Heart Rate High

When your brain perceives a threat, real or imagined, a region at the base of your brain signals your adrenal glands to release adrenaline and cortisol. Adrenaline makes your heart beat faster and raises your blood pressure. Cortisol keeps your body in that heightened state. In a genuinely dangerous moment, this system saves your life.

The problem is chronic stress. When stressors are always present, that fight-or-flight reaction stays switched on. Cortisol and adrenaline continue circulating, and your resting heart rate creeps upward over weeks and months. This isn’t something you can breathe your way out of once. It requires addressing the underlying stress through regular practice of yoga, meditation, deep breathing, or other relaxation techniques. Even 10 to 15 minutes of daily practice can meaningfully shift your baseline over time.

Exercise Lowers Resting Heart Rate Long-Term

Consistent aerobic exercise is the single most effective way to lower your resting heart rate permanently. As your heart muscle strengthens, it pumps more blood per beat, so it doesn’t need to beat as often to meet your body’s demands. Well-trained athletes commonly have resting heart rates in the 40s or even 30s. Research on competitive athletes defines resting bradycardia (unusually slow heart rate) as 40 beats per minute or below, and in athletes without symptoms, this is considered normal.

You don’t need to train at an elite level to see results. Regular moderate exercise, things like brisk walking, cycling, or swimming, performed consistently over several weeks, typically brings resting heart rate down. The change is gradual. Expect to notice a difference after four to eight weeks of regular cardio rather than after a single workout.

Hydration, Sleep, and Stimulants

Dehydration is one of the most overlooked causes of an elevated heart rate. When you’re low on fluids, your blood volume drops.
