You can check your heart rate in under a minute using nothing but two fingers and a clock. Place the tips of your index and middle fingers on the inside of your wrist, between the bone and the tendon on the thumb side, and count the beats you feel for 60 seconds. That number is your heart rate in beats per minute (bpm). You can also use a smartwatch, fitness tracker, or smartphone app, though each method has tradeoffs in convenience and accuracy.
Finding Your Pulse by Hand
The two easiest places to feel your pulse are your wrist and your neck. For the wrist, turn one palm face-up and press the tips of your index and middle fingers (never your thumb, which has its own pulse) into the soft groove on the thumb side, just below the base of your hand. You should feel a steady tapping against your fingertips. If you don’t, adjust your position slightly or press a little firmer.
For the neck, place the same two fingertips in the groove alongside your windpipe, just below your jawline. This spot picks up the pulse from the carotid artery, which is stronger and easier to find than the wrist pulse, making it a good backup if you’re having trouble at the wrist. Press gently. You don’t need much force, and pressing too hard can be uncomfortable.
Once you feel a steady beat, count the pulses for a full 60 seconds while watching a clock or timer. If you’re short on time, count for 15 seconds and multiply by four. The full 60-second count is more accurate, especially if your heartbeat is irregular, because a short count can amplify small errors.
Using a Smartwatch or Fitness Tracker
Most wrist-worn devices use a green LED light that shines into your skin and measures how much light your blood absorbs with each heartbeat. This technology, called photoplethysmography (PPG), works well at rest and during steady exercise, but it has some weak spots. Studies comparing optical wrist sensors to medical-grade chest straps have found error rates of around 8% under artificial lighting. Under natural light, that error can climb to 17%.
Several factors can throw off a wrist-based reading. Skin tone, tattoos, and birthmarks over the sensor area can interfere with the light signal. A loose-fitting band, cold temperatures, and vigorous hand movements during exercise all reduce accuracy. One validation study found that a popular fitness tracker underestimated heart rate by more than 13 bpm during cycling and elliptical workouts in younger adults. Readings also become less reliable during transitions, like when you stop running and sit down, because the sensor takes time to catch up to rapid changes.
For the most accurate wearable reading, wear the band snug (but not tight) about a finger’s width above your wrist bone, keep still for a few seconds while the device measures, and avoid checking immediately after switching activities.
Smartphone Apps
Some apps use your phone’s camera and flash to detect color changes in your fingertip as blood pulses through it. Research has found these apps reasonably valid for heart rate measurement when compared to medical monitors. Their oxygen-level readings, however, are a different story: even the best-performing app in one emergency department study misclassified roughly one in four patients. For a quick heart rate check, a well-reviewed camera-based app is a reasonable option, but it shouldn’t replace a medical device for anything beyond basic pulse counting.
Chest Strap Monitors
If you want the most accurate consumer-level reading, especially during exercise, a chest strap is the gold standard. These bands sit just below your chest and detect the electrical signals your heart produces with each beat, similar to how a hospital ECG works. Devices like the Polar H10 are used as reference monitors in research studies precisely because they’re so reliable. The tradeoff is comfort: wearing a strap around your ribcage during a workout takes some getting used to.
What Your Numbers Mean
A normal resting heart rate for adults falls between 60 and 100 bpm. If you’re physically active or an endurance athlete, a resting rate in the 40s or 50s is common and typically healthy. Children run higher: a newborn’s resting heart rate can reach 205 bpm, gradually declining through childhood until it settles into the adult range around age 13.
A resting rate consistently above 100 bpm is classified as tachycardia. A rate below 60 bpm is called bradycardia, though in fit individuals this is usually a sign of cardiovascular efficiency rather than a problem. Factors like caffeine, stress, dehydration, medications, and even body position (standing versus lying down) can temporarily push your rate outside the normal range without anything being wrong.
Checking Heart Rate During Exercise
If you’re tracking intensity during a workout, you need to know your estimated maximum heart rate. The simplest formula is 220 minus your age. A 40-year-old, for example, would have an estimated max of 180 bpm. Because this formula can be off by 10 to 12 beats per minute, a slightly more accurate alternative is to multiply your age by 0.7, then subtract that number from 207. For the same 40-year-old, that gives 179 bpm.
From there, exercise intensity zones are calculated as percentages of your max. Moderate-intensity exercise typically falls between 50% and 70% of your maximum heart rate. Vigorous exercise sits between 70% and 85%. If you want to fine-tune things further, the Karvonen method factors in your resting heart rate by subtracting it from your max to find your “heart rate reserve,” then calculating zones from that range. This gives a more personalized target because it accounts for your baseline fitness level.
Getting the Most Accurate Reading
For a true resting heart rate, check first thing in the morning before getting out of bed. Sit or lie still for at least five minutes before measuring. Caffeine, a recent meal, stress, or even a hot room can all elevate your rate and give you a number that doesn’t reflect your baseline.
If you’re tracking trends over time, consistency matters more than any single reading. Measure at the same time of day, in the same position, using the same method. A resting heart rate that gradually drops over weeks is a reliable sign your cardiovascular fitness is improving. A sudden and sustained increase of 10 or more bpm from your personal baseline, on the other hand, can signal overtraining, illness, or dehydration.
