The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends medication alongside behavioral interventions for anyone school-age or older, because treatments work best when used together. For younger children (ages 4 to 6), behavioral approaches come first, with medication added only if those aren’t enough on their own.
This layered approach makes sense when you understand what’s happening in the brain. ADHD involves lower availability of dopamine and norepinephrine, two chemicals that drive attention, motivation, and impulse control. Several nutrients play direct roles in producing the brain chemicals involved in ADHD. Zinc regulates the dopamine transporter, the exact site that stimulant medications act on. Magnesium activates the rate-limiting step in dopamine production and helps both serotonin and dopamine bind to their receptors. Iron is necessary for synthesizing dopamine and other related brain chemicals. This doesn’t mean everyone with ADHD should start taking supplements.
