How Do You Get Athlete’s Foot: Causes and Spread

Athlete’s foot spreads when your bare skin picks up dermatophyte fungi from contaminated surfaces or direct contact with an infected person. These fungi live on floors, towels, shoes, and shared linens, waiting for the right conditions to take hold on your skin. The infection is extremely common, and understanding exactly how it happens makes it much easier to avoid.

The Fungus Behind the Infection

Athlete’s foot is caused by a group of fungi called dermatophytes, with one species, Trichophyton rubrum, responsible for the majority of cases. These fungi feed on keratin, the tough protein that makes up the outer layer of your skin, your nails, and your hair. They produce specialized enzymes called keratinases that break down this protein layer, allowing them to settle into the surface of your skin and feed on it.

What makes these fungi particularly persistent is a trick they use against your immune system. Their cell walls contain compounds that suppress your body’s natural defenses. T. rubrum is especially good at this: it slows the rate at which your skin sheds and replaces itself, which is normally one of the body’s best ways of clearing a surface infection. By disrupting that turnover, the fungus creates conditions for a long-lasting, chronic infection that can linger for months or years without treatment.

Where You Pick It Up

The fungi that cause athlete’s foot are shed as tiny particles from infected skin. Those particles end up on floors, towels, shoes, rugs, and bed linens, where they can survive and remain infectious. You contract the fungus in two main ways: touching a contaminated surface with bare skin, or direct contact with someone who already has the infection.

Public spaces with warm, wet floors are the highest-risk environments. Research on swimming pool facilities has found that the most contaminated surfaces are foot-washing sinks and showers, the exact places designed to keep things clean. Locker rooms, pool decks, hot tubs, and communal bathing areas all provide ideal growing conditions for dermatophytes. The combination of high foot traffic, constant moisture, and warm temperatures turns these surfaces into reservoirs of fungal particles. Studies of male swimmers’ dressing rooms found especially heavy fungal contamination on floors, with a clear link between floor contamination levels and infection rates among the people using those spaces.

You don’t need a public pool to get exposed, though. Sharing towels, shoes, or socks with someone who has athlete’s foot is enough. The fungi can also travel on your own hands. If you touch your infected foot and then touch another body part, or dry your feet with a towel and then use the same towel on your groin or torso, you can spread the infection to new areas on your own body.

Why Shoes and Sweat Make It Worse

Picking up the fungus is only half the equation. The infection takes hold when conditions on your skin are right, and the biggest factor is moisture. Dermatophytes thrive in warm, damp environments, which is why feet are their favorite target. Your feet have more sweat glands per square inch than almost anywhere else on your body, and when they’re sealed inside shoes, that sweat has nowhere to go.

Tight-fitting, poorly ventilated shoes create the ideal growth chamber. The inside of a shoe that’s rarely cleaned or aired out becomes an optimum fungal habitat: warm, dark, and consistently moist. Synthetic materials that don’t breathe tend to trap more moisture than leather or canvas. Wearing the same pair of shoes every day without giving them time to dry out between uses compounds the problem.

Hot, humid weather accelerates things further. People who live in warm climates, work outdoors in boots, or exercise heavily are all at higher risk simply because their feet stay damp for longer stretches. The maceration (softening) of skin that happens when it stays wet for extended periods makes it easier for fungal particles to penetrate the outer layer and establish an infection.

How Quickly Symptoms Appear

There’s no established incubation period for athlete’s foot. Unlike a cold or flu, where you can roughly predict when symptoms will start after exposure, the timeline for fungal skin infections is unpredictable. Some people develop symptoms within days of exposure, while others carry the fungus for weeks before noticing anything. Still others may be exposed repeatedly and never develop symptoms at all, likely because their feet stay dry enough or their immune response clears the fungus before it establishes itself.

What It Looks Like When It Takes Hold

Athlete’s foot typically shows up in one of three patterns, all caused by the same group of fungi but affecting different parts of the foot.

  • Between the toes: The most common form. You’ll notice itchy, peeling, or cracked skin in the spaces between your toes, especially between the fourth and fifth (the two smallest). The skin may look white and soggy from trapped moisture.
  • Sole and sides of the foot: Sometimes called the moccasin pattern, this type produces dry, thickened, scaly skin covering the sole and creeping up the sides of the foot. It often looks more like dry skin than an infection, which is why many people don’t recognize it. This form is most commonly caused by T. rubrum and tends to be chronic.
  • Blisters: Less common but more dramatic, this pattern produces small to medium-sized fluid-filled blisters, usually on the inner arch of the foot. It can be quite painful and is sometimes mistaken for an allergic reaction.

All three types result from the same exposure routes. The pattern that develops depends more on the specific fungal species involved, your immune response, and the conditions on your feet than on how you caught it.

Who Gets It Most Often

Athlete’s foot is far more common in men than women, and the swimming pool research reflects this: men’s dressing rooms consistently show heavier fungal contamination than women’s. The reasons aren’t entirely clear, but likely involve a combination of footwear habits, sweat production, and how often people walk barefoot in shared spaces.

Beyond sex differences, your risk goes up if you sweat heavily, wear closed shoes for long hours, walk barefoot in communal areas, or share personal items like towels or footwear. People with weakened immune systems or diabetes are also more vulnerable to fungal skin infections in general and may have a harder time clearing them once established.

Keeping the Fungus Off Your Feet

Prevention comes down to two things: reducing your exposure to fungal particles and keeping your feet dry enough that any fungi you do pick up can’t thrive.

Wear sandals or shower shoes in locker rooms, pool areas, and communal showers. This single habit eliminates the most common exposure route. Don’t share towels, socks, or shoes with others, and if you do use a towel on your feet, don’t reuse it on other body parts before washing it.

For your footwear, rotate between at least two pairs of shoes so each pair gets a full day to air out and dry. Choose shoes made from breathable materials when possible, and swap out socks during the day if your feet sweat heavily. Moisture-wicking socks made from merino wool or synthetic blends pull sweat away from skin more effectively than cotton. Keeping your feet dry after bathing, especially between the toes, takes only a few extra seconds and removes the damp environment fungi depend on.
