Chapped lips happen when your lips lose moisture faster than they can replace it. Unlike the rest of your face, lip skin is remarkably thin and almost completely lacks the oil glands and sweat glands that keep other skin hydrated. That makes your lips vulnerable to a long list of triggers, from cold weather and lip licking to nutritional gaps and certain medications.

Why Lips Dry Out So Easily

The colored part of your lips, called the vermilion, has only 3 to 5 cell layers in its outer barrier. Compare that to typical facial skin, which has around 16 layers. That thin barrier means moisture escapes quickly. Your lips also lack hair follicles and the oil-producing glands scattered across the rest of your face, so there’s no natural film of oil keeping water locked in. These structural differences explain why your lips are often the first place to feel dry when conditions change.

Licking Your Lips Makes It Worse

When your lips feel dry, the instinct is to lick them. The brief wetness feels soothing, but saliva contains digestive enzymes designed to break down food. Those same enzymes strip away what little protective barrier your lips have, reducing moisture and leaving the skin more exposed to irritants. As the saliva evaporates, your lips end up drier than before, which triggers more licking. This cycle is common enough that dermatologists have a name for it: lip-licking dermatitis.

Weather, Wind, and Indoor Air

Cold, dry air and wind are the most familiar culprits. Low humidity pulls moisture out of exposed skin, and because lips have such a weak barrier, they lose water first. But it’s not just winter weather. People who alternate between indoor and outdoor environments throughout the day face roughly double the risk of chronic lip inflammation compared to those who stay in one setting. Moving between heated or air-conditioned rooms and the outdoors subjects your lips to repeated shifts in temperature and humidity, accelerating water loss each time.

Sun exposure matters too. Prolonged UV damage to the lower lip can cause a condition called actinic cheilitis, which looks different from ordinary chapping. Instead of temporary peeling and cracking, the lip border becomes less distinct, the skin thickens, and whitish, scaly patches develop that don’t resolve on their own. This tends to show up in fair-skinned people with years of cumulative sun exposure and is considered a precancerous change that needs medical evaluation.

Products That Backfire

Some lip balms and lipsticks contain ingredients that actually irritate lip skin. Cinnamon, peppermint oil, camphor, menthol, and fragrances like balsam of Peru are among the most common offenders. These ingredients can trigger both irritant reactions and true allergic responses. Cinnamon and cayenne pepper are particularly problematic because they directly activate pain and inflammation receptors in the skin.

If your lips stay chapped despite regular balm use, the balm itself may be the problem. Switching to a simple, fragrance-free product with an occlusive base like petroleum jelly is a reliable first step. Occlusives work by forming a physical seal over the skin that prevents water from escaping, which is more effective for chapped lips than humectant ingredients like hyaluronic acid or glycerin alone. Humectants draw moisture toward the skin surface, but without an occlusive layer on top, that moisture can evaporate right off your lips.

Medications That Cause Lip Dryness

Certain prescription drugs dry out the lips as a predictable side effect. The most well-known example is isotretinoin, a powerful acne medication. In a five-year analysis of patients taking isotretinoin, about 15.5% developed clinical cheilitis (significant lip inflammation and cracking), while 70% experienced dry skin more broadly. Other medications that commonly cause lip dryness include certain blood pressure drugs, cholesterol-lowering agents, and chemotherapy treatments. If your chapped lips started around the same time as a new medication, that connection is worth exploring with your prescriber.

Vitamin and Mineral Deficiencies

Chronic chapped lips that don’t respond to balms or environmental changes can signal a nutritional shortfall. Several B vitamins are directly linked to lip health: deficiencies in riboflavin (B2), B6, B12, and folate (B9) all list chapped lips as a common symptom. Iron deficiency can cause angular cheilitis, a specific pattern of cracking and inflammation at the corners of the mouth rather than across the lip surface. Zinc deficiency produces a similar pattern, with dryness and irritation concentrated at the mouth corners.

These deficiencies are more likely if you follow a restrictive diet, have absorption issues, or are pregnant. A simple blood test can identify them.

Cracking at the Corners of Your Mouth

If the cracking and soreness is concentrated at the corners of your mouth rather than across the full lip, that’s angular cheilitis, which has different causes than standard chapping. Infection is responsible for the majority of cases, with microorganisms found in 50% to 80% of affected areas. The most common culprit is Candida albicans, a yeast that naturally lives in the mouths of 40% to 60% of healthy people. It’s present in roughly 93% of angular cheilitis cases, though it acts alone in only 20% to 50% of them.

Most cases involve a mix of organisms. Candida and Staphylococcus aureus bacteria show up together in 60% to 75% of patients. Moisture pooling at the corners of the mouth, whether from drooling during sleep, poorly fitting dentures, or habitual lip licking, creates the warm, damp environment these organisms thrive in. Standard lip balm won’t resolve angular cheilitis because the underlying cause is microbial, not just dryness.

What Actually Helps

For ordinary chapped lips, the fix is straightforward: reduce what’s pulling moisture out and add a barrier to keep moisture in. Use a plain, petroleum-based lip balm without fragrance, menthol, or cinnamon derivatives. Apply it before going outside, before bed, and after eating or drinking. In dry indoor environments, a room humidifier helps slow water loss from the skin overall.

Breaking a lip-licking habit takes conscious effort but makes a noticeable difference within days. Keeping balm within reach reduces the urge to lick. For sun-exposed lips, a lip product with SPF protects against both acute chapping and long-term UV damage.

Chapped lips that persist for weeks despite consistent moisturizing, that develop thickened or whitish patches, or that crack specifically at the corners warrant a closer look. These patterns can point to contact allergy, nutritional deficiency, fungal infection, or sun damage, each of which has a different and more targeted solution than lip balm alone.
