How Do You Get Post Nasal Drip: Causes and Triggers

Post-nasal drip happens when your nose and sinuses produce excess mucus, or when the mucus that’s always there becomes too thick to drain normally. Your body makes about a quart of mucus every day to keep your airways moist and trap dust, bacteria, and other particles. Normally you swallow it without noticing. Post-nasal drip is what you feel when that system breaks down, and mucus accumulates in the back of your throat instead of clearing quietly.

The causes range from seasonal allergies to structural issues inside your nose, and sometimes the culprit isn’t even mucus at all. Here’s what triggers it and why.

Allergies Are the Most Common Cause

Allergic rhinitis affects roughly 20% of the population and is the single most frequent reason people develop post-nasal drip. When your immune system overreacts to an airborne substance, the lining of your nasal passages swells and ramps up mucus production. The result is a steady stream of thin, watery mucus dripping down the back of your throat.

The most common triggers include pollen from trees, grass, and weeds, dust mites (which live in carpets, bedding, and upholstered furniture), pet dander, mold spores, and cockroach droppings. If your post-nasal drip follows a seasonal pattern or worsens in specific environments, allergies are the likely explanation. The drip typically continues as long as you’re exposed to the allergen and can become a near-constant presence if you’re sensitive to something in your home.

Colds, Sinus Infections, and the Flu

Upper respiratory infections cause a sudden spike in mucus production as your body tries to flush out the virus or bacteria. During a cold, the mucus often starts thin and clear, then shifts to thick and yellowish or greenish as your immune system responds. That thicker mucus doesn’t drain as easily and pools in the back of your throat, producing the heavy, congested feeling most people associate with post-nasal drip.

A standard cold resolves in 7 to 10 days, and the post-nasal drip should follow. If it lingers beyond a couple of weeks, the infection may have spread to your sinuses. Chronic sinus inflammation, known as chronic rhinosinusitis, affects an estimated 5% to 12% of the general population and can keep post-nasal drip going for months.

Environmental Irritants and Weather

You don’t need an allergy for your nose to overreact. Nonallergic rhinitis produces the same symptoms, but the trigger is physical or chemical rather than immune-related. What happens is that blood vessels inside the nose expand in response to an irritant, swelling the nasal lining and flooding it with mucus. The nerve endings in the nose may simply be overly sensitive to certain stimuli.

Common triggers include:

  • Air quality: dust, smog, cigarette smoke, and chemical fumes (including workplace exposures)
  • Strong odors: perfumes, cleaning products, and scented candles
  • Weather changes: shifts in temperature or humidity, cold dry air
  • Spicy or hot foods: these cause a temporary surge in nasal mucus that can drip for an hour or more after eating

If your post-nasal drip comes and goes unpredictably and allergy tests are negative, nonallergic rhinitis is a strong possibility.

Acid Reflux You Might Not Feel

One of the less obvious causes of post-nasal drip is acid reflux, specifically a form called laryngopharyngeal reflux (sometimes called “silent reflux”). Unlike typical heartburn, this type of reflux sends small amounts of stomach acid and digestive enzymes up into the throat without producing the burning sensation you’d expect. Your throat tissues don’t have the same protective lining as your esophagus, so even a tiny amount of acid causes irritation, and it lingers longer because the throat lacks the washing mechanisms the esophagus uses to clear acid.

That irritation disrupts the normal processes that move mucus through your throat and sinuses. The result feels exactly like post-nasal drip: throat clearing, a lump-in-the-throat sensation, hoarseness, and a persistent cough. Many people treat it as a sinus problem for months before discovering that their stomach is the real source. Reflux-related drip tends to be worse in the morning, since lying flat at night allows acid to travel upward more easily.

Medications That Trigger or Worsen It

Several types of medication can cause post-nasal drip as a side effect, and people rarely make the connection. Birth control pills and blood pressure medications can increase thin, watery nasal secretions. On the other end, antihistamines (the very drugs many people take for post-nasal drip) can thicken mucus to the point where it doesn’t drain well, making the drip feel worse even as it reduces the overall volume.

Overusing decongestant nasal sprays creates its own problem. After several days of regular use, the nasal lining rebounds and swells more than it did before you started spraying, a condition called rhinitis medicamentosa. Some antidepressants and medications for erectile dysfunction can also trigger nasal congestion and drip. If your symptoms started around the same time as a new prescription, that timing is worth paying attention to.

Hormonal Changes

Pregnancy is one of the more predictable causes of post-nasal drip. Rising hormone levels increase blood flow to mucous membranes throughout the body, including the nasal lining, which swells and produces more mucus. This “pregnancy rhinitis” can begin in any trimester and typically resolves after delivery. Menstrual cycles, birth control use, and hypothyroidism (an underactive thyroid) can all produce similar effects on the nasal passages.

Structural Problems in the Nose

Sometimes post-nasal drip isn’t about producing too much mucus. It’s about mucus not being able to drain the way it should. A deviated septum, where the wall between your nasal passages is significantly off-center, can block one side of the nose and force mucus to pool or drain backward. The turbinates (ridges of tissue inside the nose that warm and humidify air) can also become chronically enlarged, especially on the side opposite the deviation. This enlargement increases airway resistance and can impair sinus drainage enough to cause recurrent sinus infections.

Nasal polyps, which are painless growths on the sinus lining, create similar blockages. These structural issues produce post-nasal drip that doesn’t respond well to allergy medications or environmental changes, because the underlying problem is mechanical.

How Your Cilia Play a Role

Lining your respiratory tract are millions of tiny hair-like structures called cilia that sweep mucus from your sinuses down to your throat in coordinated, wave-like motions. When cilia are damaged or slowed, mucus sits in place instead of moving through. Cigarette smoke, chronic infections, and extremely dry air can all impair cilia function. In rare cases, a genetic condition called primary ciliary dyskinesia means the cilia don’t beat at all, causing lifelong nasal congestion and repeated respiratory infections starting from birth.

For most people, cilia damage is temporary and caused by inflammation from a cold or ongoing irritant exposure. Once the inflammation resolves, cilia gradually recover their normal rhythm and mucus clearance improves.

Acute Versus Chronic Post-Nasal Drip

Post-nasal drip from a cold, a brief allergen exposure, or a spicy meal is self-limiting. It should clear within a few days to two weeks. When it persists beyond that window, something is keeping the cycle going: an untreated allergy, chronic sinusitis, ongoing reflux, a medication side effect, or a structural issue.

Chronic post-nasal drip is more than just annoying. The constant mucus in the throat can cause a persistent cough (especially at night), sore throat, bad breath, nausea from swallowing excess mucus, and a hoarse or raspy voice. If you’ve had post-nasal drip for more than a couple of weeks and it isn’t improving, identifying the specific cause rather than just treating symptoms is what ultimately makes it stop.
